Chemistry Vocabulary Words – Google Slides

Directions:

Create a NEW Goggle Slides titled Chemistry Vocabulary.

Each slide should include the word, definition and picture.

Turn in on Google Classroom under the Chemistry Vocabulary. There are target dates of completion for each section, but the Google Slides should not be

turned in until the Final Due Date - January 11, 2019. The vocabulary will count as 2 Minor Grades (slides 1-30 and slides 31-60). Pictures are

worth 2 points each!

Physical and Chemical Changes Vocabulary *Target Date = Friday 11/23

1. Physical Change: a change that occurs that does not change the identity of the substance and can be separated.

2. Mixture: When 2 or more substances are mixed together and are NOT chemically combined.

3. Homogeneous Mixture: A mixture that is evenly distributed. The parts cannot be seen.

4. Heterogeneous Mixture: A mixture that is unevenly distributed. The parts can be seen.

5. Solution: A mixture that forms when one substance dissolves another.

6. Solute: The substance being dissolved. The solute is dissolved by the solvent.

7. Solvent: A substance that dissolves another substance.

8. Insoluble: When one substance cannot dissolve into another substance.

9. Chemical Change: a change that occurs causing the identity of the substance to change and cannot be separated.

10. Chemical reaction: occurs when the original substance changes form into a new substance. Some clues to a chemical reaction may include bubbles, smoke, a strong smell, color change, temperature change, or a sizzling sound.

11. Precipitate: a solid that forms when two liquids react with each other.

12. Endothermic reaction: A chemical reaction in which heat energy is absorbed.

13. Exothermic reaction: A chemical reaction in which heat energy is given off.

14. Open System- A system that allows matter to enter from or escape to the surroundings.

15. Closed System- A system that does not allow for matter to enter from or escape to the surroundings.

Atomic Structure and Periodic Table Vocabulary *Target Date = Friday 12/14

1. Atom – the smallest unit of matter that retains the identity of a substance

2. Nucleus - the center of an atom that contains the protons and neutrons

3. Proton - positively charged particle inside the nucleus of an atom.

4. Neutron - neutrally charged particle inside the nucleus of an atom.

5. Electron - negatively charge particle that orbits the nucleus in the electron cloud.

6. Atomic Number - the number that equals the protons in an atom.

7. Atomic Mass - the number that equals the protons and neutrons in an atom.

8. Bohr Model - diagram of the arrangement of protons, neutrons and electrons in an atom.

9. Valence Electrons - the number of electrons on the outer ring of an atom.

10. Conductor – a substance that has the ability to transfer heat and electricity. *Property of Metals

11. Insulator – a substance that does NOT transfer heat, electricity or sound. *Property of Nonmetals

12. Semi-conductor – a substance that has the partial ability to transfer heat and electricity (in

between an insulator and a conductor). *Property of Metalloids

13. Metals – Elements to the LEFT of the stair step on the Periodic Table. They are usually solids,

malleable, ductile, and conductive.

14. Nonmetals - Elements to the RIGHT of the stair step on the Periodic Table. They are usually

gases, dull, brittle, and insulators.

15. Metalloids – Elements that TOUCH the stair step on the Periodic Table. They share properties of

both metals and nonmetals – solid, dull, brittle and semi-conductors.

Elements, Compounds, and Mixtures Vocabulary *Target Date = 1/11

1. Pure Substance: A sample of matter that has definite chemical and physical properties and cannot be broken down physically! *Refers to either elements or compounds.

2. Element: A pure substance that cannot be separated into simpler substance by physical or chemical means.

3. Compound: A pure substance that is created by 2 or more different elements chemically reacting and joining together.

4. Molecule: A pure substance composed of 2 or more atoms.

5. Mixture: The physical combination of 2 or more substances; can be separated by physical means.

Chemical Equations Vocabulary *Target Date = 1/11

1. Chemical Equation: The written representation of a chemical equation. Contains elements and the chemical formulas for compounds.

2. Law of Conservation of Mass: A law that states that matter cannot be created or destroyed during a chemical reaction. The mass of the reactants is equal to the mass of the reactants. 3. Reactants: The LEFT side of a chemical equation.

4. Products: The RIGHT side of a chemical equation.

5. Coefficient: The large number in a chemical equation that comes BEFORE an element or compound. It is the ONLY thing that can be changed when balancing an equation.

6. Subscript: The small number that indicates the number of atoms an element has in a compound or molecule. This can NEVER be changed when balancing an equation.

7. Synthesis: The type of equation when two or more elements combine to make a more complex substance.

8. Decomposition: The type of equation when compounds break down into simpler substances.

9. Single Replacement: The type of equation that occurs when one elements trades places with another in a compound.

10. Double Replacement: The type of equation that occurs when different atoms in two different compounds trade places.
