Section 1: These lists aren’t rightThis section has two lists. Both lists are formatted inaccessibly.

Here’s a list of colors. It’s inaccessible because it does not use built-in list formatting:- Yellow- Red- Blue- Green

Here’s a list of materials someone might need for a class. It does not use built-in formatting for lists, indents or columns:

Section 2: The weakest linksIn this section, let’s look at how to format links correctly. How would I change the link in the following message:

“Happy Caturday! I thought you might like this article about the cats that live at news bureaus around the world: https://www.nytimes.com/2017/06/05/insider/bureau-cats-new-york-times.html?rref=collection%2Ftimestopic%2FCats”

Descriptive links are easy to do and useful. Read more here.

I’m being tricky here. The text is correctly linked, but the text isn’t descriptive enough. Let’s make this more descriptive (e.g. Learn more about descriptive hyperlinks on the Accessibility homepage.)

This list may look okay, but once someone tries to edit it or read it with a screen reader they’ll realize that it’s a mess. Instead of using indenting and columns, this list was created just using the spacebar. Screen readers read every space individually, which can be obnoxious, and a user may mistake repeated spaces for the end of a document. Additionally, adding and deleting items to this list is going to be way harder for everybody than if it were formatted correctly.

Another thing to note about the items in this list: colored text can be inaccessible. For instance, the yellow text is very hard to see, and does not have enough contrast against the background. There are checkers online for you to see if your text has enough contrast. Additionally, the red and green text will not appear as red or green to someone who is red/green colorblind. Often, text is made bold and red to indicate that it’s very important, but some users will not be able to see the bolding or color. This is something to consider when using bolding and colored text to convey meaning.

Section 3: Tackling terrible tablesDon’t be misled by how normal these tables may look.

Section 4: Picture (im)perfectPictures are a great way to add branding or flare to your document. But if you don’t format them correctly, some users won’t even know they’re there. Let’s try formatting this picture of my cat, Stark.

Trick question! Let’s delete this table altogether, it’s not presenting any data.

I hid some spaces here to remind myself to demonstrate the search function: Search for spaces to catch repetitive/double spacing. Also to point out that some of these things you won’t be able to catch without the checker!
