a. Revise the prerequisite for PH 201College Physics I (5 cr.)

Recommendations:

2. Department of Health, Physical Education & Recreation:i. Revise policy to allow HP credits to be repeated

Rationale: Current policy, which does not allow repeats, has been in place for many years. The policy was established 35 years ago just as we began to understand the value of exercise with regard to health and well being. Today’s students understand and value the relationship between physical activity and health. Students who have a passion for certain activities, such as dance, would be well-served by allowing repeats. There will not be a change in the current limit of a maximum of 6 credits of HP courses, which includes HP 200, only a change in the repeat policy. With this revised policy, the Registrar would not be concerned with the specific course equivalents of transfer classes, as all activity class would be accepted without regard to type.

ii. Create the following new courses:1. HP 092 Senior Tai Chi (1 cr.)2. HP 201A Ballet- Beginning (1 cr.)3. HP 201B Ballet- Intermediate (1 cr.)

52. HP 239B Swimming- Lifeguard Training (1 cr.) as HP 271A

53. HP 239C Swimming- WSI (1 cr.) as HP 271B

Rationale: The department feels categorization by activity type would result in 8 categories that would bring order to the 80+ courses.

iv. Rename the following courses:1. HP 090 Geriatric Swimming (1 cr. ) as Senior Swimming2. HP 091 Geriatric Exercise (1 cr.) as Senior Exercise

Rationale: The course titles for the HP 090 series are now referenced as “Senior” rather than “Geriatric” activities. This change reflects the course name used by the “seniors” themselves. There has been no problem with the non-senior population trying to enroll in the HP 090 classes, as the department lists the courses with a capacity of zero. The department enrolls the seniors using a personal face-to-face process.

v. Rename and renumber the following courses:1. HP 239D Swimming- SCUBA (1 cr.) to HP 272A

SCUBA- Beginning

Rationale: This change follows the new numbering and naming suggested for all HP courses.

vi. Rename, renumber, and revise credit distribution for HP 239E Swimming- Advanced SCUBA (2 cr.) to HP 272B SCUBA- Advanced (1-0-2)

Rationale: Same as above

vii. Delete the following courses from the bulletin: 1. HP 216B Skating- Intermediate (1 cr.)2. HP 241A Tennis- Intermediate (1 cr.)

Rationale: There has been no demand for these 2 courses.

Effect on other Departments: None

Costs: There are no costs associated with this course. Faculty will be available to teach the course once every 4 semesters.

Implementation Date: Fall 2011

CUP: September 21, 2010

Proposed Bulletin Description:

HS 332 United States Immigration History (4 cr.) Offered: Contact department for information.Prerequisite: Completion of the foundation of communication requirement and completion of a 100-level or 200-level history course, or with instructor’s permission.

Survey of U.S. Immigration History examining the immigrant experience from first-contact through the present. It will explore why people immigrate, modes of transportation, settlement patterns, development of ethnic institutions, and question how immigrants assimilate and simultaneously amalgamate the host society.

Rationale: U.S. immigration continues to influence political, social, cultural, and economical questions as it has for nearly two centuries. This course investigates how immigration influences and changes the United States. Students will acquaint themselves with native and immigrant policies, backlash, and accommodation. Students will recognize the controversies immigration engenders; both past and present. Prior to this course proposal, the History Department offered the Finnish Immigrant in America. As NMU, along with our nation, continues to wrestle with increased diversification, the immigrant experience should also expand to include immigrant groups from all continents. This will provide context and understanding to our nation’s rich social and ethnic makeup.

b. Delete HS 353 The Finnish Immigrant Experience (4 cr.) from the bulletin

Rationale: The course has not been taught in several years and as NMU, along with our nation, continues to wrestle with increased diversification, the immigrant experience should also expand to include immigrant groups from all continents. This will provide context and understanding to our nation’s rich social and ethnic makeup.

Effect on other Departments: None

Costs: There are no costs associated with this course. Faculty will be available to teach the course once every 4 semesters.

Implementation Date: Fall 2011

4. Department of Physics:a. Revise the prerequisite for PH 201College Physics I (5 cr.)

Rationale: The current wording for the PH201 prerequisite is confusing to students as it may imply placement into college algebra would suffice when in fact, students must complete college algebra with a grade of ‘C’ or place into a higher course. Another

problem is that a student may place into MA106 (trigonometry) without having succeeded in MA104 and this would certainly not suffice for expectations of students mathematical skills for PH201. The recommended statement is much clearer for the students as well as for implementation with the prerequisite checking mechanism for on-line registration. See Appendix B for related bulletin description.

Effect on other Departments: None. The math department supports this change.

Costs: There are no additional costs associated with this proposal.
