  Bartitsu is an English martial arts style that combines English bare knuckle boxing, Savate (French kickboxing), Vigny cane fighting, and Japanese jujutsu. It was seen as a "gentleman's" martial arts to use against street thugs. Created in the 1890s, Bartitsu faded into obscurity. Nevertheless, interest in Sherlock Holmes (who was skilled in Bartitsu) has helped to revive this martial arts. Moreover, the Sherlock Holmes movies with Robert Downey Jr. has given Bartitsu a further boost in popularity. There is a Bartitsu Academy right here in Pleasant Hill. The instructors are Kevin & Larry Potter, and Bill Smith helped by Logan Potter as Junior Assistant Instructor. Not only are they teaching self-defense, but they are guiding young people aged 7 and up in a Victorian Code of Conduct in this Christian based program. Every Thursday from 6 – 7:30 pm 6 to 20 boys, men, girls, and women meet at the Pleasant Hill Community House. They drag out the mats, go through a series of warm-up exercises and then practice the different fighting arts. The classes are free, but donations are accepted for equipment. If you would like to learn more about it contact Kevin Potter at 931-287-5204 or leave a message at 931-277-5333.

  According to The Bartitsu Society, "In March of 1899, readers of an article appearing in London’s Pearson’s Magazine were intrigued to learn that a “New Art of Self Defence” had been introduced to their city." The author of the article and founder of the New Art was Edward William Barton-Wright… As 

detailed in the series of articles Barton-Wright authored between 1899 and 1902, his New Art – which he referred to as Bartitsu – was largely drawn from various ko-ryu (“old school”) forms of jujitsu. Over the next several years he also incorporated tactics and combat techniques from British boxing, kicking, and a stick fighting style that had been developed by a Swiss, Pierre Vigny. As such, Bartitsu – the word was a combining of “Barton-Wright” and “jiujitsu”, – became the first combat system to combine Asian and European martial arts.

  Conan-Doyle also wrote for Pearson’s Magazine and most likely chose this fighting art style calling it baritsu (dropped a “t” for some reason) as a plot device for Sherlock Holmes. There has been a certain misconception about one of history’s greatest fictional detectives – the idea that he is solely a detective and possesses no physical skills to complement his intellect. Not only was Holmes skilled in fisticuffs and other manly arts but his creator’s choice of combative methods have roots in this very rich and interesting martial self-defense method. The resurging of interest in the Sherlock Holmes stories in movies and on television has also led to a resurgence of interest in martial arts. Women in turn-of-the-century England were attracted to this form of self-defense to combat wife beaters often using umbrellas instead of canes or sticks in their training. There are an equal number of females as males in the Cumberland Bartitsu Academy.

Kevin Potter calls Bartitsu “the thinking man’s (or woman’s) art of self-defense using the body as a machine force.” Ranks of Bartitsu levels are marked by the color of the shirt  with matching wristbands: white – apprentice, yellow – intermediate, black – proficient, and red – advanced. Each rank has 3 levels - bronze, silver, gold – signified by gears placed on the wrist bands of the rank color. A student will be able to complete the level quest for each rank after completing 25 training classes. The Cumberland Bartitsu Academy is registered with the UK Bartitsu Alliance and is the only one in Tennessee. There are only 25 in the United States. The Potters have been involved with or taught martial arts for many years and became attracted to this wholesome, courteous method of self-defense. For more information go to www.facebook.com/Cumberland-Bartitsu-Academy-Of-Tennessee.
