First Sunday of AdventDecember 2, 2018

Your ways, O LORD, make known to me;teach me your paths,

Guide me in your truth and teach me,for you are God my savior,

and for you I wait all the day.Psalm 25

Did You Know?Today we enter into the sacred season of Advent. It is a time rich with symbols. The Scriptures are filled with images of light and darkness, silence and waiting. The primary color for Advent is purple, reminding us of our need to be reconciled with God. The circular shape and the evergreen of the Advent wreath remind us of eternal and everlasting life. Yes, this is a time rich with symbols and meanings, all of them reminding us of the coming of the Savior.

Advent for the FamilyMake Advent even more special this year as a family. Place a bell somewhere in your home. Draw the name of a family member and pledge to do something special for that person. Each time you do, ring the bell. Let its sound represent the sound of kindness filling your home. Who knows, it just might become a habit long after Advent.

Ready Yourself! The season of Advent has begun. It's a time in the Church to prepare for the coming of Christ. How will you ready yourself?  Our church has an answer. Every Wednesday of Advent, from Dec. 5 to Dec. 19, a meal and DVD series will be offered on the Gospel passages relating to the coming of Christ into the world. The series will begin at 6:30 P.M. and be held in Marist Hall The DVD ("The Infancy Narratives of Jesus") will consist of a twenty-minute presentation followed by a discussion. We will enjoy a specially prepared simple meal during the presentation. Please note: Wednesday's Mass during Advent will be celebrated at 6:00 P.M. to enable you to attend the Advent program.

A Joyful Heads UPHere's a "heads up" worth remembering. Our church is having a Christmas party! We'll be gathering on December 9 at 5:00 p.m. in Marist Hall. Circle that date. The party will include pot luck dinner, sing-a-longs, games for children, drawings, and a special guest appearance (care to guess?) All are welcome.

Little Blue Books

Don’t forget to pick up your “Little Blue Book” which begins the first Sunday of Advent. If you remember from last year, this little book contains short readings and reflections for the entire season of Advent. What a great way to prepare for the birth of our Lord. Pick a little blue book near the Mary altar.

FEAST OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTIONSince the Feast of the Immaculate Conception falls on a Saturday this year, it is not considered a holy day of obligation. We will have a mass to celebrate this feast day on Friday, December 7 at 7 p.m. in the church. The mass on Saturday evening will be for the second Sunday in Advent. As members of a Marist parish, we think, act and judge like Mary would do. All are invited to our holy day celebration.

Feeling Lucky? The Knights of Columbus Council 603 are sponsoring an

The Angel Tree Project The Christian Concerns Committee has placed two

Angel Trees at Holy Rosary Parish, one at the entrance of the church, and one in Marist Hall. We invite you participate in our Advent project by choosing an ornament from either tree and buying the gift represented on the ornament. These donations should be returned to the church, UNWRAPPED, at specific times. This year we will be collecting items for two worthy organizations. Christian Help is located

in Mingo County and is run by Sister Teresa Carew.  All gifts designated for this group should be returned by December 9th so that we can get them to her for distribution. Please note that some of these ornaments will be asking for grocery gift cards. Please purchase these at Save A Lot as this is where Sister Therese will buy hams and turkeys in her Kermit, WV location. Also, we will be collecting supplies needed by our local Depression/Bi-Polar Support Alliance and our homebound parishioners. We will be adding additional ornaments later in the season for these groups. As always, we thank you for

Religious Retirement Collection

We are asking for your special attention to the annual Retirement Fund for Religious Collection. It will take place on the weekend of December 8th and 9th, 2018.  This year marks the 32nd year for this important collection directed to the health and retirement needs of the Religious women and men who have served the Church of West Virginia in recent years. Do you

remember the sisters, brothers, or religious order priests who made a positive difference in your life? Today many are elderly and need assistance. Their religious communities struggle to meet retirement needs while continuing to serve the people of God. Please give to next week’s second collection.

What is Pro Life? Are we sure we are 100% Pro Life? – Part IThe Church teaches that all life is sacred and must be cherished and protected from conception to natural death. By keeping this guiding principle in mind in reviewing all the following moral issues of today, we can quickly see what it means to be 100% Pro Life, no exceptions.AbortionThis is defined as the removal of an embryo before it can survive outside the uterus. While it may not look or function completely as a baby, it is still a baby. All things are what they are at their inception. By not protecting and nurturing an embryo, we have taken the life of a little boy or girl. Now we have to ask the difficult questions for some. While many people are against abortion in general, and still calling themselves prolife, they take exception in the following cases: rape, incest, or severe mental or physical birth defects in the unborn child. Those exceptions to abortion are not prolife, because they are not protecting all life. We cannot take the life of any unborn child, regardless of their condition or the circumstances of their conception. The child is innocent, created by God in his image, and deserving of God’s plans for his life here on earth. If you believe that Abortion is wrong, then you are Pro Life on this issue.Joann Murray Lucas, Texas
