AUGUST NEWSLETTER 2014Cedar Pointe Baptist Church & KOINONIA SENIOR CARE partner for VBS!
The Ol’ Rockin’ County Fair came to Cedar Pointe Baptist Church July 7th -11th. The emphasis was on aging awareness and the contributions of older adults in the Bible, our churches and in our world. Our challenge was for the kiddos to think of older adults that they know and can help in practical ways and through KSC’s Adopt-A-Grand-friend initiative.

It’s BACK TO SCHOOL time, regardless of our age!
Our brain loses capacity without exercise just like muscles do, so mental stimulation is important, especially to seniors! This can include games and puzzles (try one of those in the paper!), doing the same things differently (like using opposite hand to comb hair or eat food), shopping at a different grocery store, picking up a new hobby (learn the computer), refreshing an old skill like playing the piano or taking an online class on a subject you’ve been wanting to learn about!
Learning something in a different way requires you to use your body and mind in unusual ways that engage new or rarely used brain pathways. http://www.elderthink.com/memory/memory-tests.php
Other benefits of lifelong learning besides keeping your mind sharp and improving your memory include increased self-confidence, meeting people who share similar interest and building upon skills you already have. You may even find yourself teaching someone else what you have learned! Give it a try this month and increase your brain capacity!
GAIN KNOWLEDGE & WISDOM from READING the BIBLE
Proverbs 1:1-7 tells us the purpose of this book:
The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel:2 For learning what wisdom and discipline are; for understanding insightful sayings;3 for receiving wise instruction in righteousness, justice, and integrity;4 for teaching shrewdness to the inexperienced, knowledge and discretion to a young man—5 a wise man will listen and increase his learning, and a discerning man will obtain guidance—6 for understanding a proverb or a parable, the words of the wise, and their riddles.
7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and discipline.
