All Star Basketball Shootout(EQUIPMENT NEEDED: 1 BASKETBALL)

1.) This is a two player game where players can either go head to head with each other, or may play as a team and participate against another team of two or three.

2.) At each basket there will be three designated locations to shoot from. i. Right next to the basket (1) is worth 1 point.ii. Near the free throw line (2) is worth 3 points.

iii. Near the three point arc (3) is worth 5 points.

3.) Each player is given three shots from any spot of their choice. The player may choose a different spot for each of his/her shots or may shoot from the same spot all three times. If there is a team of three each player will get only one shot each. In the case of two player teams, each player will receive two shots each.

4.) The other player(s) will rebound the ball and pass it back to their teammate.

5.) At the end of the round the shooter will add their score for any baskets they made dependent on which spot the shot was made from.

6.) Highest score wins.

"21"(Equipment Needed: 1 Basketball)

Often used to settle scores, 21 is a continuous, fast-paced version of basketball with few rules and little room for error.

Step 1. Decide who starts with the ballDecide who starts with the ball. Flip a coin, shoot for it, whatever. To make it easy, let's assume you're starting with the ball.

Step 2. Starting player is offense, other two are defenseTake the ball to where the three-point line is and put it in play. You are now on offense, and the other two players are on defense.

Step 3. There are no out-of-bounds or foulsPlay as though it is a two-on-one game, and try to score. There are no out-of-bounds or fouls.

Step 4. Whoever has control of the ball is offenseIf you miss a shot or turn the ball over, whoever gets control of the ball becomes the offensive player, and the former offensive player switches to defense.

Step 5. Shots are worth normal point valuesWhen you make a shot, it counts for as many points as it would in a normal game – two points typically, but three points from behind the three-point line.

Step 6. Play stops & you shoot free throwsAfter you make a shot, play stops and you get to shoot additional free throws for one point each.

Step 7. Shoot again or game continuesIf you make a free throw, you get another — up to three. If you miss, the ball is live and the game continues.

Step 8. If you make all three free throws …If you make all three free throws, you get the ball back and start over from the three point line.

Fact: There are many regional variations of the 21 rules, often requiring players to score exactly 21 to win, and making anyone who goes over go back to 11 points.until one of them wins by at least 2..

Around the World(Equipment Needed: 1 Basketball)

Around the world is a basketball game variant played by two or more players. It is often played to improve shooting skills. In this game, a series of shots must be made in and around the key, allowing a player to advance to the next position. The first player to make a shot at each position advances until he reaches the end where he wins the match.

Play typically starts at the edge of the key on one side of the basket. If the shot is made, the player advances to the next position mark on the key. When a player has made shots on every position mark (if a player misses a shot they may chance it and shoot again, and if they miss, they go back to the previous spot, or they may elect to stay where they are currently at), they then advance back in the opposite direction just like the way they came, and the player who does that first wins the game. After the player has moved around the key, the player must make a shot from the center of the three point line.

If at any point a shot is missed, a player may 'chance', meaning he gets to take a second shot. If the second shot is made, the player advances as normal. If the player misses the second shot, then the player must go back to the beginning. If player has made it to the other side of the three point line then he must make it twice. If the player chances then he may go back to the opposite side he started on game.

Once a player completes the entire sequence of shots, that player is deemed the winner of the basketball game. One variety of the basketball game allows each player three consecutive shots at a basket before having to move down one position.

Other variations include: shooting with the off arm, shooting with alternating arms, or using the backboard on every shot (except those directly to the side of the basket)

Spelling Rebounds(Equipment Needed: 1 Basketball)

Before You Start:

Give each student a number (for example: #1 thru #8 if there are eight players) Explain that each student will be shooting on their own and no one will be playing defense on

the shooters.o #2 player will rebound #1’s shot, #3 will rebound #2’s shot and so on. #1 will rebound the last

#’s shot.

Set Up: Have all players line up on the free throw line or sideline to start.

How to Play:

#1 will take a shot from the free throw line. #2 will then have to rebound that shot, whether it goes in or not, before the ball bounces two times on the court. If the ball bounces more than once, that rebounding student (#2) gets the first letter “P” of PLAYWORKS (each sequential time the ball bounces more than once, the rebounding student gets the next letter of PLAYWORKS).

#2 freezes wherever s/he is able to rebound the ball (even if s/he is off the court – there are no line boundaries).

#2 can take up to three steps from where s/he rebounds the ball, and then takes a shot. #3 then goes for the rebound through the same process. The first person to spell out all the letters of PLAYWORKS is out and has to do a task (like 20

jumping jacks, 2 laps around the yard, etc.) before getting back in the game. In between shots, the rebounder waits wherever s/he took his/her last shot (if standing/waiting

students need to move a little to get out of the way of a rebounder that’s okay) The ball must hit a part of the backboard or rim (not just the net) for the shot to count. If the

ball does not hit part of the backboard or rim, the shooter shoots again.

Variations:

For younger students, allow the ball to bounce two times before getting a letter Shorten the word to “PLAY” for a shorter game If a student rebounds the ball before it bounces at all, s/he can erase the last letter that s/he

got If a player makes a shot, s/he can erase the last letter that s/he got Use spelling words from the students spelling list.

The Game of Knockout Rules(Equipment Needed: 1 Basketball)

1.) Gather all players at either the free throw line or the three point arc with two fully inflated basketballs.

2.) The first two players in line are given the ball. The first player in line will shoot the ball and immediately after the second player in line will shoot theirs. The second player in line may not shoot their ball until the player in front of them has taken their shot.

3.) Play until someone wins. The object of the game is to get all of the players out. Here is how you get people out:

When one player shoots the ball and misses, the next player has to shoot and make it before the first player makes it. If this happens the player in front of the shooter is out.

If the first shooter makes their shot they pass the ball back to the next person in line and play continues. The game will go on until there is only one person left.

Three Line Basketball(EQUIPMENT NEEDED: 1 basketball, 3 Cones)

= Team 1

= Team 2

= Team 3

= Cones

Set Up: Place three cones at the top of half a basketball court.

How to Play:

Have everyone stand in three single-file lines, one behind each cone. The first player in each line steps forward past the cone and turns and faces the next player in

line. The three people that have stepped out are a team of three and will play defense. They will play in a half-court game against the next players in line behind each cone, who form

another team of three. Other players in line wait their turn to play while cheering. The defenders get ready as the first offensive player, behind the middle cone, starts with the

ball. This player passes the ball to one of her/his teammates to start the game.

The object of the game is to be the first team to score. The following rules apply:o If a player shoots and misses, either team can rebound the ball and shoot again immediately.o When a point is scored the team that made the basket stays on the court to play the next three

people in line. The team that scored starts on defense. The team that did not score returns to the end of their respective line.o If a foul is called, the player who has been fouled gets to throw the ball in from out of bounds. If a game is taking too long, have players waiting in line count down from ten, nine, eight, etc. o The last player holding the ball takes a free throw shot. If the player makes the shot, her/his

team stays on the court. o If the player misses, her/his team returns to the end of the line and the other team stays on the

court. If a team wins three times in a row they have earned three claps and return to the end of the

line.

Variations:

Players cannot dribble, in order to move the ball they must pass. When players on defensive rebound the ball, they must pass it one time before they can shoot

the ball.

World Cup Soccer(Equipment Needed: 1 Soccer Ball)

1.) Students will break off into teams of two or three.

2.) In this game every team is for themselves, and there is two goalies in goal.

3.) Play starts with one of the goalies punting the ball out into the playing area. The teams will work together with their teammates to try and score a goal.

4.) In order for their goal to count the team must yell out their countries name before they shoot the ball. If this is done correctly and the team scores then that team sits on the side of the goal and waits for the next round.

5.) Play continues until there is only two teams left from the first round. The first team to score will move on to the next round and the team left over will leave the game.

6.) The next round starts with all teams, except the eliminated team, back in the game and the cycle starts over.

7.) Play will continue until there is only two teams left in a round for the World Cup Championship.

Endzone Soccer(Equipment Needed: 1 Soccer Ball, Boundary Markers)

The object of the game is for one team to score against the other by passing the ball to a teammate in the end zone. The size of the end zone can be adjusted according to the number and skill of the players.

Mark out an end zone at either end of the playing area with cones or other markers. Divide class into 2 teams. Each team tries to move the ball down the field by dribbling and passing to get in

position to pass the ball into the end zone. A point is scored only if the pass is controlled within the end zone by the passer's

teammate. By using the end zone pass rather than kicking at a goal, players must move up and

down the field rather than just blasting away at the goal. If players try to hang around in the end zone instead of going up and down the field,

mark an offside line about a third of the length of the field from each goal. Attacking players are not allowed past this line until the ball crosses it.

Soccer Kickball (Equipment Needed: 3 Cones, 1 Soccer Ball)

Divide the class into even teams. One team is up to kick and the other in the field. Everyone on the kicking teams kicks before they go out into thefield. One base is placed in the field (as far out as the age level permits). Two cones are placed approx. 4 feet on either side of home base (this too, depends on the age level of the students). The kicker kicks a stationary ball from home plate and then runs out to 1st base and back to home - s/he may not stop on 1st base. The fielding tries to kick the kicked ball through the cones before the runner gets back to home base. The fielding team may not use their hands to play the ball. If they do, it is an automatic point for the kicking team. If the kicker makes it back home before the ball is kicked through the cones, the kicking team gets a point. If the fielding team kicks the ball through the cones before the kicker gets back to home, it is no point. The game goes fairly fast and everybody gets a chance to kick and field the ball.

Soccer Wall Ball(Equipment Needed: 1 Soccer Ball)

Students will form a single file line in front of the wall, or kickboard. The first student will kick the ball against the wall with the intention in mind that the person behind them also has to kick the ball against the wall. They have the option to either kick the ball hard or soft trying to get the ball to stop rolling before the person behind them has the chance to kick it. If the ball stops or the kicker misses the wall, then that person is out.

P a g e | 12

Soccer(Equipment Needed: 1 Soccer Ball)

How to Play:

The game begins with a kickoff in the center of the field. The two teams stand on opposite sides of the field and wait until the team awarded possession

passes the ball forward. Once the ball has been touched forward, play begins. However, play cannot begin by dribbling the ball; the first touch of the game needs to be a pass. When the ball goes out of play from a side boundary line, it is put back in play using a throw-in. This is an overhead throw using two hands with both feet remaining on the ground. The throw-in is awarded to the team who did not cause the ball to go out of bounds. A corner kick is awarded when the ball goes over the end boundary but not through the goal,

and is last touched by a defensive player. The ball is placed at the nearest corner, and the offensive team gets a free kick. A goal kick is awarded when the ball goes over the end boundary but not through the goal, and

is last touched by an offensive player. The ball is placed in front of the goal area, and the defensive team gets a free kick. Tripping, pushing and deliberate use of the hands are called fouls. A foul results in a free kick from the point of the foul. Illegal use of the hands includes anything from just below the shoulder and down; including

elbows and arms. A goal is scored when the ball passes through the marked goal area. If the game is using cones as the goal, the shot must be below head level of the goalie. Play then stops, the ball is returned to the center of the field, and the non-scoring team restarts

play with a kick off identical to the one that began the game.

500(Equipment Needed: 1 Ball)

Description: This game needs a group of kids and a ball that can be easily thrown and caught. One person is the thrower and stands at one end of the playing field. Everyone else waits at the other end of the playing area (throwing distance away from the thrower). The thrower tosses the ball in the air towards everyone else and announces a number between 50 and 200. If a kid catches it they get as many points as the thrower yelled. If the ball is missed or dropped, that person loses the same number of points (negative score are possible). The first person to get 500 points wins and become the thrower for the next game.

Bridges, Tunnels and Gates(Equipment Needed: None)

Students will be divided into teams of three with 10 objects across from a starting line placed within a hula hoop. And a cone set up behind them to begin play.

Each student will be assigned a task. Either Bridge, Tunnel or gate.

On the teachers command the teacher will call out either bridge, tunnel or gate at which time the student assigned to that task will run down behind them and touch the cone. The students who are not performing this task will make the type of structure called.

Bridge – Students will make a bridge by holding each others hands above their heads.

Tunnel – Students will make a tunnel by laying on their backs and placing their feet together for a student to crawl under.

Gate – Students will make a gate by clasping their hands together, extending them out straight and making a gate with the other student.

After the student touches the cone, they will run through the structure, grab and object from the hula hoop and bring it back to their team. The first team to do this gets to keep the object. The first team with all objects wins.

Entourage(Equipment Needed: None)

Have the students pair up with another student and then have them play rock paper scissors, in a best of three series. The losing partner is now part of the winners entourage and follows the student around cheering them on. This continues until the overall winning student has an entourage of all the people they beat, and they go up against the other half of the class.

Evolution (R,P,S)(Equipment Needed: None)

It is simply a rock, paper, scissors tournament framework. Everyone starts at the lowest level (an egg) but if they win a game of rock, paper, scissors, they get to evolve to the next level. Out of each game, there is a winner who evolves up a level and a loser who devolves back a level (as far as possible – an egg just stays an egg). Participants can only play against people at the same evolutionary level as those – there is a pose/action & noise to indicate which level they’re at and they have to find other people doing the same thing. Because of the evolution/devolution, people can’t just play with their friends because, one way or another, their friends will quickly no longer be at their level. The evolutionary chain: Egg – hands arched over their hed Dinosaur – T-Rex style claws with a dinosaur-ish roar Chicken – arms bent into wings and clucking Superhero – Superman flying pose with an optional cry of “faster than a speeding bullet!” Alien – fingers make antenna on top of head, with a “biggle biggle” type noise “This guy!”/”This gal!” – a super confident double-thumbs pointed to chestEncourage this to be fast paced so everyone gets to move up and down the evolutionary ladder a few times, and if there are any odd ones out (either due to numbers or, more likely, because no one else is at their position on the evolutionary ladder), they’re not left waiting too long until their next game starts.

Ultimate Ball(Equipment Needed: 1 Ball of Any Kind)

Set Up: Mark off a large open playing field in the shape of a rectangle with cones.

How to Play:

On the leader’s signal, the team starting on defense throws the ball to the offensive team. One player from the offense either catches the ball or picks it up where it lands, and tries to

pass it to one of his/her teammates. When anyone on either team has the ball, s/he can only use one foot to move, pivoting around

the other foot which must be planted on the ground. They cannot take steps or run with the ball.

The offense tries to advance the ball down the field with passes, and scores a point if one of the team members catches the ball in the end zone.

The defense tries to block or knock down the ball to gain possession. If a ball is knocked down or intercepted, play of the game is switched and the defense now becomes the offense, heading toward their end zone.

Players may not touch each other, even while playing defense and must keep a safe distance from the player with the ball.

Variations:

Use different colored jerseys if necessary to clarify the teams, as directions change often in this game and players may get confused.

For those just learning the game, allow one or two steps when they are throwing the ball. Change the ball to a football, making it a lead-up game to Football. Change the ball to a frisbee for more skilled players. This game is called Ultimate or Ultimate

Frisbee.

P a g e | 17

Ultimate Kickball(Equipment Needed: 1 Kickball)

How to Play: The object of the game is to kick the ball, run the bases, and touch home without getting out and have your team score as many points as possible.

Divide the group into two teams. There are no foul balls. Players can kick the ball backwards only if there is a backstop or wall behind home plate. There can be more than one runner on a base at any time. Runners may choose to stay on one base if it is unsafe to run. Runners can pass each other at any time. Runners must return to the previous base if the pitcher has the ball before they are half-way to

the next base. Runners can get out when their fly ball is caught before it bounces or if they are tagged while

not on a base. Teams switch after one time through the kicking rotation.

Variations: Notes: This version of kickball works well because it allows the advanced players to run fast through the bases and it allows beginners to take their time and learn the game.

Tetherball Rules(Equipment Needed: 1 Tetherball Set)

1. One player is selected to serve.

2. The server’s opponent is given a choice of either side of the court on which to play or the direction in which the server will serve the ball.

3. To start a game, the server hits the ball around the tether ball pole. The ball may be hit with an open or closed hand. As the ball travels around the pole, the server attempts to hit it again and again in the direction of the original serve to wind it around the pole.

4. The opposing player tries first to unwind the rope and then to wind the rope around the pole be hitting the ball back in the opposite direction.

5. The player who winds the rope completely around the pole is the winner.

6. When one of the following violations is committed, play stops and the ball is forfeited to the opponent.

Hitting the ball with any part of the body other than the hands.

Holding or catching the ball during play.

Touching the pole with the body.

Hitting or catching the rope.

Stepping inside the neutral zone.

Winding the rope completely around the pole on the serve before his or her opponent has an opportunity to hit the ball at least once.

Team 2 Square (Equipment Needed: 1 Playground Ball)

Before You Start:

Review standard rules of 4-square as well as any variations used at your school

Two students are in each “square” (either half of a standard court or the entire square if playing with two courts)

Decide which team will serve

Set Up: Set up a standard 4-square area (see 4-Square page); or the game also works

well with two 4-square courts spaced about five feet apart (draw with chalk if needed).

How to Play:

Standard rules of 4-square apply, along with all of the ways play can be stopped:o If the ball bounces twice in a team’s squareo If a student hits the ball out of bounds or into their own squareo If a student does not allow the ball to bounce before returning it The variation for Team 2-Square is that teams must take turns hitting the ball, alternating back

and forth between each student. If one student serves the ball and it is returned, the other student on their team must hit it back. If one student hits the ball twice in a row, their team must go to the end of the line.

If playing with two full courts, the space between the courts will be considered out.

Variations:

Add more courts/squares to play team 3-square or team 4-square Add more players to each team

Four Square(EQUIPMENT NEEDED: 1 FOUR SQUARE BALL)

1.) Each player stands in one of the four squares.

2.) To start the game, the player in square four serves the ball by bouncing it in their square once and then hitting it towards one of the other squares. The receiving player then hits the ball to any other player in one of the other squares.

3.) The ball must bounce in another player's square, and they must hit it to another player before it bounces a second time.

4.) A player may hit the ball before it bounces, if they choose to do so.

5.) If a player hits the ball so that it misses another player's square, or fails to hit the ball before the second bounce after it has landed in their square, they are "out".

6.) When a player is out, the other players move up to take their place, and that player moves to the last square, or to the end of the line, if there are more than four players.

7.) The object of the game is to move up to and hold the server's position.

Hula Hoop Four Square(EQUIPMENT NEEDED: 4 HULA HOOPS)

Set Up: Place four hula hoops in a square. This works well on a four square court with one in each square.

How to Play:

Every player may begin hula hooping when the first person in line gives the magic word, such as Hoop!

All players continue hooping as long as they can.

If a player drops their hoop, that player leaves the hula hoop on the ground and goes to the end of the line.

The first player in line, goes into the empty spot and play begins again.

Variations:

After the magic word, players count twenty or sign a short song. At the end, all players rotate spaces as in standard four square.

Players who have not dropped the hula hoop must continue hooping while the new player enters the game.

A player who stays in for three consecutive rounds gets a round of applause from the group then must go to the end of the line.

Allow players to hula hoop around their arm, knees, neck or other parts of the body.

Flag Football Rules(EQUIPMENT NEEDED: 1 FOOTBALL, FLAG BELTS, CONES)

1. Each team has four attempts or downs to score a touchdown.

2. Possession changes: (Ball will start wherever the down occurs on the next play)

a. After scoring a touchdown (worth 1 point)

b. If the ball is intercepted

c. After four downs

3. Any offensive player on the line of scrimmage is eligible to receive a pass.

4. There will be a 3-yard neutral zone at the line of scrimmage. The defensive team will take three steps back from the line of scrimmage (where the ball is placed).

5. The quarterback must be behind the line of scrimmage in order to throw a forward pass.

6. There will be no blitzing allowed in the game, however in turn there will be no quarterback sneaks.

7. Only the ball carrier can be de-flagged.

8. De-flagging occurs when one flag is removed, the ball carrier must stop and the line of scrimmage will be where the de-flagging took place.

9. Blocking (obstructing an opponent without using any part of the body to make contact) may only take place WITHOUT contact. The blocking player must have hands behind their back and can only take a position that allows the other player time to stop or change direction if needed.

10. It is illegal to obstruct the runner/receiver by holding, grabbing, or obstructing their forward progress when taking the flag.

11. Unnecessary roughness, illegal blocking, or other rule breakages will result in a 10-step penalty. Example: Defense makes contact during blocking; from where the play ended the offensive team adds 10 steps of progress toward the end zone. If a player commits a second offense they are removed from the game and will serve as referee until the next game.

Gaga Ball Rules and Variations(EQUIPMENT NEEDED: 1 PLAYGROUND BALL OR GATORSKIN BALL)

1.) All players start with one hand touching a wall of the pit.2.) The game begins with a referee throwing the ball into the center of the pit.3.) When the ball enters the pit, the players scream 'GA' for the first two bounces, and 'Ball'

on the third bounce, after which the ball is in action.4.) Once the ball is in play, any player can hit the ball with an open or closed hand, but may

only use one hand at all times, and may not throw or pick up the ball.5.) If a ball touches a player below the knee he or she is out and leaves the pit. If a player is

hit above the knees, the play continues.6.) If a ball is knocked out of the pit, the player who struck the ball last to knock it out is

removed from the game.7.) A player cannot touch the ball two times in a row - the ball must first touch another

player or the pit wall or it is called a “double touch” and that player is out.8.) When there is only two players left each player is then allowed three touches on the ball

to speed up the game.9.) Any time the ball touches another player or the wall the count is reset, and the player

may hit the ball again.10.) If needed, a second ball can be thrown in the pit to expedite the end of the game. The

last player standing is the winner of that round.

Domination GaGa

This variation is great for “leveling the playing field” among players of various ages and/or athletic ability. Gameplay is as above except that when a player gets “out”, any player who was previously gotten out by that player can re-enter the pit.

P a g e | 24

Mayhem GaGa

Use up to 4 balls for this game (different colored balls work best to help keep track of "double touches"). Players may not see it coming!

Dodge GaGa

If a player catches the ball in the air, the last person to hit the ball is out.

Team GaGa

Players stay on opposite sides of pit (which can be re-shaped into a rectangle or even “figure 8”) and play until one team is totally eliminated. Getting each opponent out allows a teammate to re-enter. Can be combined with “Dodge GaGa” allowing ball to be caught.

Defender GaGa

Each player picks a wall panel to defend from being hit by the others. Keep score by number of hits and high score loses!

Giant's Treasure(Equipment Needed: Treasure)

1. One player is picked to be the “giant”. He or she stands at one end of the room, and

everyone else stands at the other side.

2. A piece of “treasure” is placed under the giant’s legs (it can be any object you choose).

3. The giant must stand with his back to the other players.

4. The object is for the players to take the treasure from the giant. However, when the giant

turns around everyone must freeze in place.

5. If a player is caught moving once the giant turns around, they are out.

6. You can decide ahead of time if being out means the player has to go back to the starting

line, or is out until the next round.

7. Eventually someone gets the treasure and runs to the other side to start the game again,

this time with a new giant.

Head or Catch(Equipment Needed: 1 Ball)

The students all stand in a circle with the teacher or another student standing in the center. The teacher while standing in the center will be holding a gatorskin ball and will go around the circle to each student and say either head or catch. The students will perform the command and if not they are out. When the teacher says opposite then the students perform the opposite of whatever the teacher says, for example if the teacher says head the students will catch the ball.

Hopscotch(Equipment Needed: 2 Markers or Stones)

Hopscotch is a game that has been around for over three hundred years. A favorite of children everywhere, you can play it with friends or all alone. The word hopscotch means “hop-scratch,” since players sometimes scratch the court into dirt or slate on the ground, and then play by hopping over the scratched lines. There are many variations to choose from, but they all have a few rules in common.

Start With Your CourtBegin by drawing a court on the pavement with chalk, or in firm dirt with a stick. You can choose from various classic courts, or invent your own.

You’ll want it to be between six and eight feet long by three or four feet wide, but it doesn’t have to be perfect. This game is for fun!

Get your MarkersEach player will need a distinct object to act as a marker. It will need to be heavy enough not to blow away, and flat enough to not roll. Nearby rocks make great markers, as long as you keep track of whose rocks are whose.

Determine Player OrderChoose who goes first, second, and so on. You will go in the same order every round.

Pitch Your MarkerThrow your marker, trying to make it land in the number one square. If you make it, good for you! If not, your turn is over, time for the next person to try.

HopIf your marker lands in the right place, now it’s time for you to hop. Avoiding the number one square, hop on one foot in each of the other squares in order. If two squares are next to each other, use both feet to hop on them at the same time. If you make it all the way to home without tripping or missing a square, good for you! If not, you must try again on your next turn. Either way, it’s now time for the next person to have a turn.

AscendPitch to the next number in order and if your pitch was successful hop, avoiding the stone that contains your marker. Each turn should either include a successful pitch and hop, a successful pitch and unsuccessful hop, or an unsuccessful pitch. Only players who have successful pitches and hops can try for the next highest number on their next turn. It might take several turns to get some numbers right.

WinningWin in a group by being the first to get all the way to home, having successfully pitched and hopped every number in order. Win alone by getting all the way to home, having successfully pitched and hopped every number.

Hot Spots(Equipment Needed: 1 Basketball, Polyspots/Cones/Markers)

Before You Start:

Have players line up behind the cone, facing the basketball hoop.

Set Up: Can be played outside or in a gym. Set up a cone at about half court on a basketball court. Scatter the polyspots all around in front of the basketball hoop.

How to Play:

One player at a time dribbles to a polyspot to stand on and shoot the ball.

If the player makes the shot, they pick up the polyspot and retrieves the ball. They bring the polyspot back to the line, place the spot in a pile next to the cone and pass the ball to the next player standing in line, who then dribbles to their own spot to shoot from.

If the player misses the shot they gets the ball and passes it to the next player in line. Play continues in this manner until all of the spots are claimed. Players may then spread out the spots and play again.

Variations:

Create two to three teams who must try making baskets at the same time. Allow players to take a second shot if they miss. This game can be modified to most any sport, such as soccer--shoot from a spot into the soccer

goal--and volleyball--serve the ball over the net from a spot.

Hungry Fox(Equipment Needed: None)

Set Up: Designate a large rectangular play area with clear boundaries and enough room for children to run. On one end of the rectangle have an end zone that will be the designated safe zone.

How to Play:

The object of the game is to avoid being tagged by Hungry Fox The children will start at the beginning of their safe zone ask “What time is it Hungry Fox?” Whatever time Hungry Fox says the children will take that number of steps towards Hungry Fox,

leaving their safe zone. If Hungry Fox says “its lunch time” the children must run back to their safe zone without getting

tagged. If you get tagged you freeze until Hungry Fox turns you into one of his helpers. When you are a helper you begin to tag other children when Hungry Fox says its lunch time.

Variations:

Teach the students to whisper “What time is it Mr. Fox?” Instead of running, only toe-to-heel walking is allowed for both Mr. Fox and the students. To reduce the chaos and reemphasize safety, only the 1st person tagged will become the new

Mr. Fox. All others will start again against the wall.

Jump 1, 2, 3(EQUIPMENT NEEDED: 1 LONG JUMPING ROPE)

How to Play:

Divide everyone into groups of four to ten, depending on the number of available ropes and skill level.

Younger players may need smaller groups, older jumpers are challenged by larger groups.

Each group gets one rope. The leader assigns two turners

in each group and the rest form a line.

The two turners begin by turning the rope. One-by-one the players enter and exit the rope. In the first round, the jumpers try to run under the rope without jumping or touching the rope. After each jumper's attempt or completion, s/he returns to the back of the line. Once the jumpers have complete running through, s/he enters, jumps once and exits on their

turn on the jumper's second turn. After the jumpers have jumped once and exited, they go through and jump twice, then three

times, etc on each turn. If a jumper misses on their turn, s/he goes back in line and continues to try the same number of

jumps, until s/he successfully jumps and exits. Be sure to rotate those who are turning the rope.

Variations:

For more skillful and advanced jumpers, change from just jumping and exiting to doing tricks while jumping.

Examples of tricks are turning around while jumping, touching the ground while jumping, criss-crossing the feet or jumping on one foot.

Also called School. Those who run through the rope have figurative completed kindergarten, jumped once have completed first grade, etc.

Kickball(Equipment Needed: 1 Kickball)

Set Up:

A regulation kickball field is 60' x 60'™ between the bases.

How to Play:

Play begins with the pitcher rolling the ball smoothly to home plate. The kicker must kick from behind home.

If the ball is kicked and rolls out of bounds before going past first or third base, it is called a foul and the kicker must try again.

Kickers must run the bases in order and may stop at any base and wait to run again at the next kick. There, however, must be only one runner on a base and they must remain in order. No runner can pass the person in front of them.

A run is scored for the kicking team when a base-runner touches all 4 bases, in order, without being called out at any time.

A runner advances one base on an overthrow to the base player. Teams switch sides after three outs or nine runs are scored. Outs are granted when:o The pitcher controls the play of the game. Play begins with the pitcher rolling the ball to the person

up to bat, the kicker. Play stops when the ball is thrown to the pitcher.o The kicker kicks a fly ball and it is caught before it touches the ground. Note: When a fly ball is in the

air, the base runners must remain on base until after the ball is caught (called tag-up) before they can advance to the next base.

o The base player has control over the ball and a foot on the base before the base-runner reaches the base.

o The base-runner is tagged on his/her body by a fielder with the ball before s/he arrives at the base. Note: If the base-runner must advance because of another runner or kicker behind, it is called a force-out and the fielding team only has to tag the base to call an out. If there is no runner or kicker behind, it is not a force-out and the fielder with the ball must tag the base-runner.

o One base-runner passes another.o A base-runner intentionally interferes with a fielder who is trying to recover the ball.o Three fouls by an individual kicker equal an out. If a ball is touched by a member of the fielding team before it bounces, it is a fair ball. For safety, there is no sliding or throwing of the ball at a player With older players, you could instate a rule that allows players to throw the ball at a runner below

the waist (or shoulders) in order to get that player out. A throw that hits the head results in an extra base for that runner--they go to the base they were running to and an additional base.

Consider a no-bunting rule to make the game more fair with a variety of player skill levels.

Mother May I?(Equipment Needed: None)

One person serves as the "Mother" (or Grandmother, or even Father or Grandfather). Everyone else lines up about 20 feet away from Mother and faces her.

Mother starts at one end of the line and says something like, "Sarah, you may take three big steps forward." Sarah must respond with, "Mother, may I?" Mother then says "Yes, you may" and the player proceeds by taking the three big steps forward. If Mother says only "Yes" the player cannot proceed.Mother then moves to the next person in line. Mother can instruct different players to take a different number of steps and different kinds of steps each time (e.g. big steps, baby steps, regular steps, hopping steps).

The game continues until one person finally reaches and touches Mother. Whoever reaches Mother first becomes the Mother for the next round. The game sounds simple, but as it continues someone inevitably forgets to ask "Mother, may I?" or makes a mistake by moving when Mother says only "Yes." When either of these things happens, or a player doesn't take the number or kind of steps designated by Mother, Mother sends the player back to the starting line.

Panthers, Bears, and Eagles(Equipment Needed: None)

Split group up into 2 teams, designate 2 safety zones, one on each teams side, and designate a middle area.

Each team then gets in a huddle and picks what they want to be as a team, a Panther, a Bear or a Eagle.

Bears put their hands up over their heads, Panthers put their hands our straight in front of them making claws, and eagles flap their wings.

Once the teams have decided their character they want to be, they come up to the center spot and line up face to face, then on a count of 3, everyone does whatever action their team picked.

Bears beat Eagles, Eagles beat Panthers and Panthers beat Bears, so the team that beats the winning team chases the other and tries to tag as many members on the other team as possible before they reach the safety zone.

The members from the team that get tagged become a part of the other team.

Repeat until all players are on one side.

PIG(Equipment Needed: 1 Basketball)

This is a fun and simple basketball game to play with two or more players that helps you practice and hone basketball shooting skills. It is played with the same structure and rules as HORSE but plays quicker and faster since you have only three letters. Play PIG as part of a basketball practice or camp or play in the backyard when you only have a few moments before dinner. The game only consists of shooting and there is no defending so this remains a calm, easy game, especially for kids.

Step 1Gather two or more people to play PIG around a basketball hoop and a basketball.

Step 2Decide who goes first by choosing randomly. Choose the next birthday or play Rock Paper Scissors to determine who goes first.

Step 3Shoot a basic shot from anywhere on the court. It can be a standing or moving basketball shot, such as from the three point line or as a lay up. If the first player makes the basket, the next person must follow the same shot from the same position and successfully make it as well.

Step 4Try to make the shot exactly as the first person, if he completed the first shot. If you miss, you have earned the letter "P" in the word PIG. Continue through the players until everyone has either made the shot or earned a "P."

Step 5Move to the second player who makes an original shot that everyone tries to duplicate. All the players must now recreate this shot from the same position and form as the first player. Continue until all the players have taken this shot.

Step 6Eliminate any player that spells the whole word "PIG." The winner is the last person who has not completely spelled the word "PIG."

Step 7Vary the basketball game by changing the shot and leader as soon as the first person misses the recreation shot. The next person in line then takes the lead by creating a new shot.

Step 8Change the basketball game again by continuing to make the same shot over and over again until someone in the game misses it. If it is a simple shot, everybody might make the shot several times before someone misses. That person would then earn the next letter.

Ship to Shore(Equipment Needed: None)

Ship/Shore is similar to Simon Says. There is one person that is IT (a.k.a. Simon). IT stands at the front of the group and calls out commands that the rest of the students must do. If a student does the wrong action, or if it is an action that requires them to get into groups and there is a person without a group, then they are out.

Some of the actions are:'Ship' all students move towards the ship (one side of the playing field)'Shore' all students move towards the shore (the opposite side of the playing field)'Man overboard' 2 person action. One person gets down on hands and knees. The other person puts one foot on the back of the person on the ground and shades their eyes like they are looking into the distance for someone. 'Crows nest' 3 person action. 3 students get together with their backs towards each other and lock arms.'Captain's coming'. Each person must salute. Students can't move from 'captains coming' until IT calls 'at ease'. If a player moves, they are out. (similar to in Simon Says when IT says 'jump up and down' rather than 'simon says up and down')'At ease'. All students put their hands at their sides and can continue when the next action is called. 'Hit the deck'. All students lay down on their bellies.'Three men in a boat'. 3 campers get together in a line and squat. They must act like they are rowing a boat while they sing "Row Row Row Your Boat".'Octopus'. Students must lay on their backs with their arms and feet waving in the air.

Spud(Equipment Needed: 1 Ball)

How to Play SPUD: “It” holds the ball and all the other players circle around him.

“It” then throws the ball straight up in the air while calling out a number.

The player with that number must catch the ball either while it is coming down or on the rebound.

While the player is catching the ball all other players scatter and get as far away as they can from the person catching the ball.

When the ball is caught that player yells “SPUD!”.

The players who are running away must then stop in their tracks.

The player with the ball then tries to throw the ball and hit one of the other players.

If the player hits someone then the player he hits gets a letter in the word SPUD. If he misses then he himself gets a letter. When a player gets all four letters of the word SPUD they must sit out the rest of the game.

Variations:

- The player catching the ball can select a player he wants to hit and then take 4 steps toward that player before throwing the ball.

- If a player who’s number was called catches the ball without letting it bounce they can then throw the ball in the air and call another number. Then that player must run back and try and catch the ball. If they catch it they can call out another number while throwing the ball in the air. If they miss they take 4 steps and try and hit another player.

- Instead of assigning numbers players surround “it” and then “it” counts to 10 while the other players scatter. “It” then yells SPUD and everyone freezes. “It” can take 4 steps towards the person they are attempting to hit before they throw the ball.

Steal the Bacon(Equipment Needed: Anything)

The object of Steal the Bacon is take the "bacon" back to your own side without being caught.

In this game, two teams are chosen, and one umpire is selected. One object is required to the bacon. (a glove is a common choice)

The members of each team are numbered. They form two opposing lines and place the bacon in the exact center between them.

The umpire then calls out a number. The players on each side who are assigned that number are the players for that round. No other team members leave their side of the field.

Neither player may touch the other until someone touches the bacon. Once a player touches the bacon however, the other player may tag him/her.

If a player is able to grab the bacon and carry it back over to his/her own side, that team scores a point. (VARIATION: in some games, points are scored by carrying it to the other teams side or either team's side)

If a player is tagged after touching the bacon and before he/she returns their own side, the team that tagged him/her scores a point.

Note that the sequence of play usually involves the two kids running out and hovering over the bacon, waiting for a slight advantage to grab it and run back before the other player can react.

The game is over when a predetermined number of points are scored, or when all numbers have been called.

VARIATION: The umpire can call more than one number, in which case several players from each side participate. In some games, players may tag any player on the opposing team, in others, a player may only tag the player on the other team that they share a number with.

Tag Games(Equipment Needed: None)

Band-Aid TagOne person is "it." Whenever someone is tagged by "it" they must hold a bandaid (their hand) on the spot where they were tagged. Then the game continues. When someone runs out of bandaids, (they get tagged three times), they are frozen until two other people come over to them and "operate." The two other people need to tag the frozen person at the same time and count to five. Let the game continue for as long as it remains exciting and fun. Switch the person who is "it" often.

Bronco TagHave the group get into pairs and lock elbows. They can spread out anywhere within the playing area. There is one person that is it and another to be chased (you can have two chasee’s if there is an odd number of people). The chasee will then run from IT. If tagged they then become it, but they can reach safety if they lock elbows with a pair of people sending the person on the opposite end they locked elbows with free to be chased.

Cats in the CornerClass is divided into four groups, keep one person out to be the "it". Each group is given a corner, which is a safe area. To begin the game, the "It" will say: cats in the corner. On this signal the players must run to another corner before being tagged by the "it". Any players that get tagged while moving between corners is also an "it". The last player to be tagged is the winner and by be it the next game if he chooses. VARIATION - all players in your group must go to the same corner. Also players may have to go to corners in a particular order.

E.T. TagUse cones to establish boundaries for the playing area. Select 3-5 students to be taggers and give them a pinnie. Have all students spread out in the playing area. On the teacher’s “GO” signal, the taggers try to tag the other students. If a student is tagged, they must freeze and stick their pointer finger out in front of them. In order to get unfrozen, another student (who is not a tagger) must put his/her pointer finger against the frozen student’s pointer finger and state, “E.T. phone home.” The frozen student becomes unfrozen and play resumes.

Triangle/Circle TagTo begin, make groups of four to five people. One person will be it and will stand off to the side. The others will join hands and form a circle. While the "it" is off to the side, they will select someone in their circle to protect. When play begins, the person who is "it" will try to identify and tag the person in the circle. The other players will twist and turn to try to protect the person in the middle from being tagged. The circle must always remain intact. If the protected person gets tagged, the roles can be switched so everyone gets a chance to be it.

Big Bad Wolf Tag

The cones should be set up so that the cones for the wolf den and the mother or father's pig house are across the gym from each other. Have the three pigs' houses spread around the gym so the students will be able to move throughout the gym.

At the beginning of the lesson, remind students about what it means to move safely through space: to look where you are going, and to make sure one does not follow exactly behind another person.

To play the game, have the "Big Bad Wolf" stand in the middle of the gym. A mother or father pig must be chosen; this person will go to that such-designated cone. The rest of the students will be divided up equally among and placed in each of the three pigs' houses.

The wolf will then pick one of the three houses upon which to call (e.g., "House #1"). He or she says loudly, "Little pigs, little pigs, let me come in". The pigs in the house will say together "not by the half of my chinny chin chin." Then the wolf counts to three "1, 2, 3". On the count of three, each of the little pigs in that one house move to a new house. The wolf then tries to tag a pig; any pig that is touched by the wolf must then go to the wolf den.

The only way a pig can get out of the wolf den is if the mother or father pig sneaks over to the den while the wolf is trying to catch more pigs and brings one pig only out of the den. If a pig is saved, that pig may have a free walk back to any of the pig houses.

After every few turns, choose a new wolf and mother or father pig. (Have the wolf or parent pig choose a student who has not been either of these two roles.)

Variations:

If students are very good at moving safely through space, you can have them move AS A GROUP to a new house they choose at the beginning of each turn. For example, if the wolf picks house #1, all the students in house #1 would move to the house which the group decided to move to before the wolf called out to them. Be sure to stress safety when there are a lot of children at one house.

Spaceship Tag

Instruct the students on personal and general space. Demonstrate movement with arms and legs out and then have the students display that activity, making sure they are not touching anyone or anything in "space." Tell them they are each going to get a "spaceship," which will be their own personal space. While in their "spaceship," they will not be allowed in any other student's personal space.

Have students walk to one of the hoops, which are scattered throughout the gym, stand in it and hold onto the hoop with the hands, keeping the hoop parallel to the floor. The front part of the hoop is touching the student's waistline. Have the students move in their self-space, emphasizing that their hoop/"spaceship" should not be touching any other hoop/"spaceship." Tell them they are going to walk around the gym (or outside) in their "spaceship," making sure not to bump into anyone or anything. Discuss that if their "spaceship" bumps into another "spaceship," they must sit down inside the "spaceship" with their hands on their knees. They cannot get up and walk until the teacher taps them on the head.

At first have the students move slowly around the gym. With successful practice allow the students to gradually increase their walking speed. In addition, encourage them to move in different pathways, at different levels and perform various locomotor movements.

"Spaceship Tag":

When the students are successful at not bumping into each other, turn it into a walking tag game. 2-3 students will be "it," remaining in their "spaceships." When they tag, they say "spaceship down." The tagged student sits in the "spaceship" and any of the other students in the class, other than the taggers, can free her/him by gently tapping on the head and saying "spaceship up." Change the taggers frequently. As the students are playing the game, assign different locomotor skills.

Note: I use this when I am trying to get the students to spread out and not touch each other. I am able to remind them of "Spaceship Tag" while playing other games, and, as a result, they stay in their own personal space.

Snow White TagClass is divided into seven teams, each team being named for one of the dwarfs. One player will be selected as the wicked witch or wicked warlock. Explain that the witch has cast a spell on the dwarfs. When the witch says the name of the dwarfs they must run to the opposite end of the gym and back without being tagged by the wicked witch. If a dwarf gets tagged he must go to the dungeon. Once in the dungeon he can be released only by snow white, who normally stays in the safety of her castle. The game will continue for a certain period of time or until snow the wicked witch tags white. If the witch gets snow white, or if she has any dwarfs at the games end, the witch wins. If all the dwarfs are safe at the end of the game, as well as snow white, the dwarfs and snow white win the game.

Reverse TagFirst you choose who is it, the people that are NOT IT count to five while the person that is IT Runs away. They then go after "IT", when "IT" gets tagged the person that tagged them becomes IT then has to run from everyone.

Monarch Tag The game begins with one Monarch. This person starts with the ball and is technically the "It". As the only Monarch, this person can run with the ball and try to hit another player with it underhand throwing below chest height. As soon as another player has been hit with the ball they become a Monarch as well and game play changes slightly. With more than one Monarch whoever is holding the ball can NO LONGER MOVE WITH IT. All the other Monarchs can move without the ball but the person with the ball must stand still. The ball can be passed from Monarch to Monarch in an attempt hit other players with it creating more Monarchs. Play the game until there is one person left.

Lizard TagThis game can be played with any sized group as long as there are an even number of players. Players are split up into pairs. The pairs are the lizards. One person should be in front as the head and the other in back as the tail. You will need to give each pair a bandana or something that can be used as a tail. The tail or player in the back will put the bandana in their back pocket or back of the pants they are wearing so it looks like a tail. When the leader calls out “go”, the pairs must stay connected and try to grab as many tails from other players as possible. If a lizard grabs a tail from another pair that pair is frozen. The last pair with a tail wins.

Line-Up TagHave the students get in a line shoulder to shoulder facing opposite directions for every other student. Then have the two students on the end play a game of tag around the line. They cannot go through the line but must go around at all times. They can stop being it by finding someone facing their same direction, depending on what side of the line they are on, and taking their place.

Dragon TagHave the students get in groups of 4. Have the students get in a mock conga line with their arms on the person in front of them shoulders. The person in the front is the head and the person in the back is the tail. Designate a team to be it. To tag someone you must tag their tail, when this happens they now become it. Variation: When a dragon tags another dragon the two must combine and form a larger dragon by making a larger conga line.
