A Note from Rev. PatDear Friends

Remembrance Sunday explores the theme of memory, both corporate and individual, as we confront issues of war and peace, loss and self-gift, memory and forgetting. Our exhibition in St Nicolas’ church helps us to remember the 100 years of Remembrance commemorating the signing of the Armistice 1918-2018. We pray for Peace.

The annual cycle of the Church’s year now ends with the Feast of Christ the King. The year that begins with the hope of the coming Messiah ends with the proclamation of his universal sovereignty. The ascension of Christ has revealed him to be Lord of earth and heaven, and final judgement is one of his proper kingly purposes. The Feast of Christ the King returns us to the Advent theme of judgement, with which the cycle once more begins.

This may be a good time to reflect together on our stewardship of gifts, time and talents. To share our stories of how God has guided us together as his Kingdom people here in Shoreham and Kingston Buci.It is the time to celebrate what has been and to plan and pray for the next steps we are going to take together as a United benefice through our Mission Plan. We also have to acknowledge our failings and our need for forgiveness and reconciliation and formally renew our commitment to journey together as representatives of God Kingdom here on earth.

Rev Pat

Today’s WorshipCollect God, our refuge and strength, bring near the day when wars shall cease and poverty and pain shall end, that earth may know the peace of heaven, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

First Reading: Jonah 3.1-5,10The word of the Lord came to Jonah a second time, saying, ‘Get up, go to Nineveh, that great city, and proclaim to it the message that I tell you.’ So Jonah set out and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the Lord. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly large city, a

three days’ walk across. Jonah began to go into the city, going a day’s walk. And he cried out, ‘Forty days more, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!’ And the people of Nineveh believed God; they proclaimed a fast, and everyone, great and small, put on sackcloth.When God saw what they did, how they turned from their evil ways, God changed his mind about the calamity that he had said he would bring upon them; and he did not do it.

Second Reading: Hebrews 9.24-28For Christ did not enter a sanctuary made by human hands, a mere copy of the true one, but he entered into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God on our behalf. Nor was it to offer himself again and again, as the high priest enters the Holy Place year after year with blood that is not his own; for then he would have had to suffer again and again since the foundation of the world. But as it is, he has appeared once for all at the end of the age to remove sin by the sacrifice of himself. And just as it is appointed for mortals to die once, and after that the judgement, so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin, but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him.

Gospel: Mark 1.14-20Now after John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God, and saying, ‘The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news.’ As Jesus passed along the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake—for they were fishermen. And Jesus said to them, ‘Follow me and I will make you fish for people.’ And immediately they left their nets and followed him. As he went a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John, who were in their boat mending the nets. Immediately he called them; and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men, and followed him.Post Communion:God of peace, whose Son Jesus Christ proclaimed the kingdomand restored the broken to wholeness of life:look with compassion on the anguish of the world, and by your healing powermake whole both people and nations;

through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

Recycling in our Benefice: Small changes can make a difference and if every household in Adur and Worthing recycled ...1 additional squash bottle per week the Council could save over £13,000 per year. These can be recycled into: bin liners, carrier bags, plastic bottles, flooring & window frames, insulation board, fencing & garden furniture, water butts, garden sheds, composters, seed trays, fleeces, fibre filling for duvets, pillows etc and a variety of office accessories

1 extra cola can per week, in one year could save over £7,000 on landfill taxRecycling just one extra wine bottle per month would save over £26,000. These can be recycled into new bottles and jars or used for road surfacesAluminium foil, trays and aerosols are recycled into new cans and car parts.There is an ultimate cost of tax passed on to the council taxpayer for every tonne of waste which goes to landfill. The benefit of diverting the expected tonnages of materials will avoid disposal fees over the coming years, money which could be used to provide benefits to the community.

St Giles’ and St Julian’s church halls are now collection points for items that cannot be recycled through our council collections. Your pens and felt tips, baby food pouches, nespresso coffee capsules, crisps and snack bags, biscuit wrappers, trigger spray guns, aerosol lids, all purpose cleaner tops, surface wipe packs to name a few will be given to Recycling in Lancing who has been raising money for charities that support local people since 2011. Please look out for the posters in churches and halls or visit recyclinginlancing.org.uk for more information.

Kingston Buci Harvest Collection in aid of Send A Cow raised £122. Thank you for your generosity.

St Nicolas' Art and Craft Exhibition. A massive thank you to all who participated in whatever way at last weekends event. Congratulations to them all. Len Batten.

St Julian’s now has a prayer board, which everyone, including one-off visitors, is very welcome to use. It’s temporarily placed on the shelf at the back of the church as we are trying to find the best location for it. Please let us know where you think the best place is for it to be positioned on a permanent basis. The churches of St Nicolas’ and St Giles’ already have prayer boards in use.
