The things we do in leadership are a lot of group work with our team. When we first walk in the class we have to shake hands with our teacher, Ms. Nixon, and then we write our Leadership Journal. After we write, a few students from the class shares some good things that are going on in their lives. On Mondays and Wednesdays we plan our Highlander Spirit Projects, on Tuesdays and Thursdays we have Leadership lessons, and on Fridays we do team building activities. When we have nothing left to do and we still have enough time we paint posters to publicize activities we plan for the school. We are involved with the school a lot because we set up for rally’s and many other things, too. Our grade is basically based on our service hours to the school. Leadership is basically about being a leader and motivating others to do good, as well. Leadership is actually fun because you get involved with school activities and helping others. We learn that working together helps to get things done faster and having fun while you’re working! Students are required to participate in 15 hours of McLane activities per quarter. These hours are completed by helping with the student snack-bar at a sports event, helping DJ at a club/sports event, set up for a school dance, helping facilitate an activity on campus, etc. Students often get so excited about getting involved that they go above the 15 hour requirement, earning 10 or more extra hours in a quarter. When they complete 25 service hours, leadership students become a member of the very coveted Scotty Spirit Club. Something I won’t forget are the lunch time conversations with the guys. If I could do anything differently I would do all my assignments so I wouldn’t fall behind and have to make up classes. I would have also been involved in more extra-curricular activities. I do see myself coming back to say hello. I know that I will certainly miss a couple friends and teachers. In the next year I see myself attending Fresno City College and being a part of the registered nursing program. I also see myself working and having my own place and hanging out with friends on the weekends. The best advice I can give to the underclassmen is to have as much fun as you can while you are here at McLane, but more importantly get your work done first! Joe GuerreroOur Leadership GoalsWe as a leadership class try to show spirit to everybody. By playing music at lunch, having special guest come to our school, encourage other students to come to our games, also getting to know one another. We also make signs and posters to show people how much we want them to support our school. In order to do all of this, we must inspire our fellow students. At the gun, they all started out, not exactly in a dash, but with relish to run the race to the finish and win. All that is, except, one runner who stumbled on the asphalt, fell, stumbled over a few times, and then sat on the track and began to cry. The other eight runners heard the cry. They slowed down and looked back. Then something unusual happened. One runner began to walk back. One by one, they all turned around and began to walk back--every one of them- towards the fallen runner. One runner bent down and picked up the fallen runner. Then all nine linked arms and walked to the finish line together. Everyone in the stadium stood, and the cheering went on for several minutes. Where could something like this happen? The Special Olympics. People who were there are still telling the story. Why? Because deep down inside of us, we all know one thing. What matters in this life is more than winning for ourselves. What matters in this life is helping others win even if it means slowing down and changing our course. The Leadership Students of McLane Present the Most Dedicated Teacher of the MonthWe are proud to announce this month’s most dedicated teacher is Ms. Nixon. We would like to honor and show our appreciation to her for the hard work she does and all the love she spreads. We would also like to thank her for all the time and devotion she has given to McLane and its students. And to all the students, we would like to ask you to say, “Thank you.” or give a hug to show that we really do appreciate when someone cares as much for our school as Ms. Nixon does. Sometimes finding a person who cares is hard, so students please come together and show her we love her. Thank you Ms. Nixon! We love you!Copying linked text boxesYou can copy an article or a chain of text boxes that are Notes on Linked Text BoxesThe text boxes that you link to must be empty—they cannot contain text.Linked text boxes must be contained in a single document.
