More than that, Paul reveals that those who follow Christ are themselves temples, temples of the Holy Spirit; that is, God dwells not only with them, but in them. Jesus identified himself not with the temple, but as the temple. In so doing, Jesus indicated a dramatic shift in what it means to worship God, to be in God’s presence. The Dedication of the Lateran Basilica

November 9, 2014

The LORD of hosts is with us;our stronghold is the God of Jacob.

— Psalm 46:8

THE TEMPLE AND WORSHIPIn all of today’s readings, the temple is prominently

mentioned. Ezekiel speaks of streams of living water flowing out from the temple, watering the desert, bringing life to all living things, offering fresh healing to God’s people.

Paul reminds the Corinthians that their faith rests upon the firmest of foundations, Christ himself. More than that, Paul reveals that those who follow Christ are themselves temples, temples of the Holy Spirit; that is, God dwells not only with them, but in them.

For the Jews of Jesus’ time, the temple had come to be identified with the presence of God and the only place where authentic worship of God took place. Jesus had a different perception. Jesus identified himself not with the temple, but as the temple. In so doing, Jesus indicated a dramatic shift in what it means to worship God, to be in God’s presence. No longer was a place to be the focus of prayer. Instead, a person, the person of Jesus Christ, becomes the center of our worship.

THE EDGEThe Edge program meets Monday evenings from 6:00-8:00 pm in the Parish Hall. It’s a program for middle school youth, ages 11-13 that gives teachings about the Bible and current issues. They also keep it fun for the kids by playing games that encourage them to interact with other middle school youth. It's free of charge and Edge is a good way to keep the kids motivated to have God in their lives and continue their religious journey with the confirmation program after middle school.

¿SABIA USTED?

DID YOU KNOW? #463 & 264Knowing Internet lingo can help parents safeguard childrenOnline chat rooms, instant messaging systems, and even cell phones equipped to send text messages are environments rich in abbreviations, acronyms, and other shorthand that help increase the speed of communication. Parents need to become aware of some of the common lingo that is used in these environments. Some of these terms may be found to be vulgar, degrading, or otherwise offensive. However, parents and educators need to have a level of understanding of the dangers that face our children. Learn to stop inappropriate activity before it happensTeach your child to respect the word “stop!” Teach your preschooler that “stop” means “stop,” and that your child has the right to stop people from touching his or her body. Obviously, exceptions will have to be made for doctors and parents, but even parents must listen when a child doesn’t want to be tickled or hugged anymore. Reinforcing this excellent lesson gives your child the power to recognize -- and to stop -- “bad touching” by others if it should happen.
