Overview of the event:

The event consisted of two parts:

The first part was arranged especially for children: an interactive play, with scenario based on the stories from the On-landia website, performed by professional actors. The inhabitants of the magical forest (the Internet), a mother and two kids, learned together with the audience how to use Internet safely. Children, who watched the play, also took part in the performance by giving the right answers to the questions on Internet safety and learning from that. Svyatoslav Vakarchuk - Ukrainian popular singer and public figure – celebrity person, presented the site On-landia and showed the children how to use it.

After the play children were entertained by clowns, magicians and actors dressed as forest animals. They learned a lot and enjoyed the entertainment program.

While children played games and learned about Internet safety, the second part began. It was the actual press-conference for the journalists.

Eric Franke opened press-conference with his welcome speech. He outlined growing role of the internet nowadays and thus emphasized the importance of ensuring child safety online. Eric Franke told about the Coalition for Child Safety Online and their joint initiative with Microsoft Ukraine “Child Safety Online” project, explained its goals. Having announced the official launch of www.safetyonline.org.ua and briefly described its content, Mr. Franke introduced other speakers and passed the word to Svyatoslav Vakarchuk.

Svyatoslav Vakarchuk explained why the issue of internet safety is so important nowadays and stressed out that close public attention should be turned to this matter.

spoke about the hazards that children may face in the Internet and described some cases of child abuse over the Internet in Ukraine.

Then Courtney Zukoski, Partners in Learning Manager, Microsoft Ukraine, took the floor to give more details on Child Safety project. She outlined again its target audience and goals. Courtney also announced family essay contest and gave more information about it. The goal of the essay contest is to attract as much attention as possible to On-landia website.

Finally Lesya Zub, Head of Criminal police on child affairs, Central administrative board of Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, told about the influence of violence, pornography and negative content of the internet on children’s psychology.

Press conference was closed by Q&A session. Journalists asked many questions, most of them concerning future joint initiatives of Microsoft Ukraine and Coalition for Child Safety Online,

essay contest. General Manager of Edipresse Ukraine, international publishing house with more than

200 editions in 18 countries of the world, expressed great concern in the issue and their immediate desire to join the Coalition for Child Safety Online.

In addition to press conference, family and social media took a series of comments from speakers during the informal lunch part.

The event was attended by 30 representatives from IT, social, family and lifestyle media, there were journalists from TV, radio and information agencies. All of them pointed out the high level of the event. It also showed great success having gathered over 20 children to see the performance and learn about safety in the internet.
