April 3

April Fools Program

Tom Sharp and Arnie Bandstra were the brave souls who revealed some of their woodworking

foibles at the April meeting. Arnie described some of his challenges in designing a globe stand

from scratch and the joinery problems he overcame. Tom also explained the unplanned design

changes he made to a desk cubby for his grandson. In the process, he revealed the neat secret

compartment but was scorned by the peanut gallery for only hiding a $1 bill for his grandson in-

stead of a twenty! In spite of the humor of the presentations, both Tom and Arnie gave us some

good ideas for hiding and overcoming woodworking mistakes.

Save your nickels and dimes for the Library Sale in June. The library will be selling all the hard-

copy magazines that we have currently have on DVD. Those magazines include Fine Wood-

working, Woodsmith, and Shopnotes. There will be single issues of Fine Woodworking, but

some Woodsmith and Shopnotes will be sold with appropriate binders. There are also a number

of books we will be selling. A complete listing will be in next month’s newsletter.

Mike Brady is Leaving Us

You may have noticed some changes to our FVWWC officers list - notably Dave Burk is now

our VP and Tom Zillman is the new member at large. While he may be around for awhile yet,

Mike Brady is moving to Indiana to be closer to his family. Mike has been a very active mem-

ber of FVWWC since 1984. He has been the program guy for a number of years in the past

and started the popular Hand Tool SIG with Mike Bridger about 10 years ago. Not to worry

about the SIG - he is leaving it in the capable hands of Arnie Bandstra. Mike has been our VP

since 2012. If you are an

attendee of the hand tool

SIG, then you know how

knowledgeable Mike is

about all sorts of tradition-

al woodworking hand

tools. And he does a

great job explaining their

use as he did for us last

November, presenting a

great demo on hand cut

dovetails. We wish you

well Mike - thanks for all

you have done for

FVWWC.

The photos, courtesy of the DuPage Woodworkers,

were taken in April when Mike gave his dovetail talk to

that club.

Show and Tell Guidelines

For many of us, Show and Tell time is our favorite part of the monthly meetings. It’s great to see

and hear what our fellow woodworkers have been up to. The skill involved, the time spent, and

the pride people have while talking about their work makes everyone smile. However, the in-

creased number of items is taking more time. Sometimes, show and tell time goes long and we

end up curtailing the program time which is unfair to our speakers. As a result, we would like to

provide a bit of a regimen to ensure we can provide equal time to each person’s bragging rights.

Here are the guidelines:

1. Bring all you want to show, but talk only about one. Feel free to describe the others be-

fore the meeting, during the break, or after the meeting.

2. Let us know why you made it, what kind of wood you used, any special joinery that you uti-

lized, the finish applied, and any other favorite aspect you like about your piece.

3. We would like you to be brief and complete your remarks within 3 minutes. For more

detailed attributes or stories about the article, save them for the break time. In this way every-

one can have sufficient time to talk, we can use the Show and Tell time more efficiently, and we

can enjoy everyone’s handiwork.

4. Is your project too big to bring to Show and Tell ?

For projects just too large to bring in, you can bring a jpeg photo file (.jpg) instead. One or two

photos will do, in keeping with our need for brevity. You could also make a short slideshow using

MS Power-point. Again, please keep it to a couple of slides. The best way to give us your photo

or Power-point files would be on a USB flash drive. Bring it in early so we can load it into the lap-

top before the meeting starts. Thanks.

Future Events Please note that the tour of the Chicago School of Guitar Making originally planned for June is cancelled. There wasn’t enough interest to make this a club sponsored tour. However, for any-one who is interested you can contact them directly and I believe they will give an individual tour. Saturday, 09 June 2018 – Lee Nye’s Shop – 10:00 am Lee’s expertise is crafting period furniture so it will be a learning experience to see the tools he uses to build his projects. President’s Sawdust

Tom Sharp, President FVWWC The editorial musings of your president which maybe serious, funny, technical, or philosophical, but hopefully

always entertaining.

Pen Making Investment

How much would you pay to make a pen for your mother-in-law? Consider this is a

sweet old lady that really appreciates when she gets gifts. Consider this is for a Mother’s

Day gift. Remember too that you are new to pen making and you are learning a whole

new woodworking niche of using a wood lathe. The investment made is also part of a

learning process that provides good experience with inlays for pens.

Normally a pen kit cost around $10 and a blank is maybe $5. Put those together and you

have a grand total of $15. Not bad for cost. You could go really fancy and double the

pen kit and blank cost for $30. That’s a nice pen. You could also go to Office Depot and

get a really nice pen for $30. However, it would not have the magic of a pen made-just-by-you-for-her.

I decided to go the custom route. I wanted to make something special so I bought the inlay rose barrel from Rockler.

This barrel is $24.99. This is a fine piece with multiple pieces made up of a rose, stem and a number of leaves cut with a

laser. The Manhattan pen kit that goes with the barrel is about $7. So, in the end the pen will cost $32. This total is a

fine sum. You can make the pen and it still won’t be more than a big bouquet of flowers.

But things happen along the way. I managed to get the inlays in place. But when I was squaring the end of the barrel on

the drill press a big chink broke out the end ruining the barrel. This is what makes woodworking frustrating. This is why

old men curse in their workshop. Why walking away and turning out the lights to the shop and taking a nap seems per-

fectly appropriate.

Bea is a sweet mother-in-law. It’s not her fault I broke out the end of the barrel. I’ll buy another barrel and be more

careful. Another $24.99 please.

I put the inlays in place. I square the end. This time I use a disc sander instead of the drill press. It’s perfect so far. I

mount the barrel on the lathe. As soon as I start to turn it and I touch it with the gouge, a quarter of one of the leaves

pops out and disappears down the vacuum. Now there’s a hole in the barrel. Stronger language at a high volume has

never been emitted in my shop. You can’t buy individual leaves. You have to buy a whole new barrel kit. However, this

time there is an alternative. If I can remove the same leaf out of the original barrel I ruined I may be able to use it in

place of the missing one.

Using a Dremel rotary tool proves to be less than worthless. It chews the wood and gives no precision to the cut. In-

stead, I use my scroll saw and manage to take out a section that contains the part of the leaf I need to replace. I man-

age to get the right piece carved out and put in place of the missing leaf portion.

Lots of superglue later, the leaf portion is in place and the barrel is turned, lacquered, and assembled with the pen kit. I

figure getting the leaf in place saved me $24.99. Never mind that I had to buy two barrels for that amount.

The Fence Alignment System Tool (FAST)

Carter makes some very good bandsaw accessories and a while back I bought a FAST, their bandsaw fence alignment tool at the Indy Woodworking Show. I think the tool is simple but very clever. The tool works great to align bandsaw fences for resawing. The photos below will help explain how it works.

The tool thickness estab-lishes the resaw spacing to the fence. This one is 3/16 “. There is a notch to allow space for the set of the blade teeth. The rare earth magnet holds the tool to the bandsaw blade.

You position the tool at about the midpoint of the board height you are resawing. Ad-just the fence parallel to just kiss the tool. I have had very good results resawing with the FAST and even use it when the thick-ness I want is more than 3/16 inch. I just eyeball the fence to be parallel at the spac-ing needed. If the cut is narrower than 3/16, I put the tool on the opposite side of the blade and just sight along the fence for parallel. Preset widths of the target thick-nesses would be better, though.

For resawing, I use a lot of blade tension and of course, a sharp blade. I am careful to use my 4/5 tpi 1/2 inch blades for resawing only and avoid any other use that would possibly kink or deform the blade in any way. Otherwise, I keep a slow steady feed rate to allow the blade to clear the chips and do not pause in the cut.

Recently I was explaining the FAST tool to a friend and went looking on Carter and Amazon web-sites to see how much it cost. I was miffed to find out that it is now only sold as part of a 5 piece set of varying thicknesses for $55 !!! Somehow I was able to just buy the one piece at the woodwork-ing show. I sure didn’t spend anything like $55. Taking a page from our friend Dave Dockstader, the Frugal Woodworker, I was sure I could make my own FAST’s much cheaper. While the Carter FAST is a pretty piece of blue anodized aluminum, a shop made wood tool will work just fine. And, you don’t really need the scale engraving. You too can make one in just a few minutes.

The Fence Alignment System Tool (FAST)

I used scrap 1/4 inch oak for my shopmade FAST tools and found some 1/2 inch magnets to hold them in place. Add a bit deeper kerf for the bandsaw teeth set. Thickness the blade area to the desired resaw thickness and recess the magnet. While my markings say 1/4 and 1/8, I actually made them about 1/32 or so thicker. This allows enough thickness to plane or sand the material to remove saw marks. Your results may vary.
