KS4 GCSE Fine Art

Schemes of Work

Page 2:  · Web view CIE IGCSE Spec, examination 2017 - 2019 …

Fine art may be defined as work which is produced as an outcome of students’ personal experiences, rather than that which is created exclusively for a practical function or that which is the outcome of a tightly prescribed brief.

Work produced for this qualification will demonstrate the use of formal elements and creative skills, and give form to individual thoughts, feelings, observations and ideas. Students will show evidence of trying to extend their own and others’ ways of seeing the world. They will use the language of the subject sensitively and thoughtfully to support their intentions.

In the context of this specification, disciplines will include painting and drawing, printmaking, sculpture and alternative media.

For this endorsement, students will need to work in at least two disciplines for the GCSE.

- Painting and Drawing- Printmaking- Sculpture- Alternative Media- mixed media, installation, site-specific work, assemblage, digital, film and video

UNIT TITLE: Layers

Year 10 Fine ArtDuring year 10, students will produce 2 projects with 2 seperate outcomes that cover the 4 Assessment Objectives. The process for each project will be the same as the process that the students will go through for their exam. Exploration of a theme through observation and other artists’ work, recording of ideas, experimentation and realization of an outcome. The themes are very open to interpretation and will prepare them for the open nature of the exam question.

Good introduction to GCSE.

A lot of disciplines explored.

Students enjoyed the work, even when finding the step up from KS3 challenging.

Keeping to 2D work helped in terms of building skills and confidence.

Pace- we think we gave students too long to complete things- this could now be difficult to get

them up to speed for the next project.

Ensure pace is maintained!! Stricter timeframes.

Extend Unit 1- actuallygive more time- rather than feeling like we’re catching up / falling

behind.

Have adapted some of the SOW towards IGCSE (Edexcel or CIE), but is largely

unchanged.

UNIT TITLE: Surface and Pattern DURATION OF UNIT: 6 weeks

UNIT OVERVIEW: (reference objective and object number in your subject guide)ASSESSMENT OBJECTIVE(S):

After investigating an open theme such as Layers, students will now consider a more physical / aesthetic theme- Surface and Pattern. As a range of disciplines is necessary, students will continue to develop their drawing and photography skills but should now progress onto mixed media.

UNIT INQUIRY QUESTION(S): ATL SKILLS: (Subject skills that are the focus within this unit)

What is meant by surface and pattern? Where can we find examples of these qualities? How can we create / reinterpret these qualities?

equipment and materials, awareness of pace.- Research Skills- Artist research and analysis, collect and select

More accessible for students who don’t have the pure drawing skills.

The boys tend to really enjoy ceramics!

Surface and Pattern is an aesthetic / physical theme, therefore was easy for all students to

access and get started.

Pace again- I think we were so focused on year 11 exams, we tended to allow year 10 longer on

tasks… … be more observant and aware of year 10s pace and move them along!

Year 11 Fine Art

In year 11, the Fine Art and Graphic Communication course continue to follow the same timeframe. This year is about preparation for the terminal exam. This occurs through the absolute finalization of coursework in term 1, the mock exam and the reflection of the students’ performance in the mock exam. The gradual increase in pace and greater expectation for independent study, also prepare students for the exam. The exam will take place around April after several weeks of preparation.

4 -5 weeks How can an idea or theme be realized as a visual outcome? What is the process of creating a visual outcome? An outcome / realization of ideas is expected to be produced in these 4 weeks. Students are to utilize the initial observations, collected resources and experiments created previously in order to show fluidity in their work.

Mock exam 7-8 weeks How can we plan for creativity? Can we predict the realization of our intentions?During this time, students will work to the exact constraints of an art exam. The timeframe below is by no means a “one-size-fits-all” approach. Some / many students may choose to work very differently. However, this provides a framework in which all of the criteria can be met in the given timescale.

Suggested timeframe…2 Weeks- Independently- mind-map, collect secondary sources, take photographs, artist research. In the classroom- initial observations.2-3 Weeks- Independently- artist analysis. Reflection and technical refinement.

4 weeks. What are my strengths and weaknesses? Should we play to our strengths or develop our weaknesses? What happens if we take risks and it “goes wrong”?During this time students will reflect on the assessment of their Mock exam and consider where their strengths and weaknesses lie. Students will be encouraged to refine their skills both practically and analytically. How students use this time will be almost entirely as a response to teacher feedback and self and peer assessment.

Exam 7-8 weeks preparatory time.10 hour timetabled exam, across two days.

What do we need to do to achieve our potential in the exam? What are the constraints and criteria that we have to work to? How can we prepare for the 10 hour exam?Students will be introduced to the exam paper soon after the Winter break. Students will be familiar with the rules and regulations of the exam, but these will be made explicit throughout this time. As mentioned above, the timeframe below is by no means a “one-size-fits-all” approach and some / many students may choose to work very differently. However, this provides a framework in which all of the criteria can be met in the given timescale.
