VERY!!!! It is difficult when looking at a map or

globe to see where many places are

To help us find places there are imaginary lines around the world

Across the middle of the globe is an imaginary line splitting the world into the north and south.

This line is called the EQUATOR To split the rest of the world this way

we have lines showing how far north and south you are looking for- these lines are called LATITUDE, they are measured in degrees

The imaginary line that splits the world into east and west is called the MERIDIAN.

This lines goes through Britain and is sometimes called the Greenwich Meridian.

Lines either side of this are called lines of LONGITUDE, these are measured in degrees and show how far east or west of the meridian a place is.

Complete the globe on the worksheet using the correct labels.

Then complete the tick question box. Stick the sheet in your book.

Because latitude and longitude lines are all based on the same lines, no matter what atlas you use the places are on the same lines of Longitude and latitude.

To find out this information you need to use the index.

Latitude and Longitude

The latitude of ‘a’ is 20ºS…’a’ is 20º south of the Equator. The longitude of ‘a’ is 20ºW…’a’ is 20º east of the Greenwich Meridian. Therefore we write the latitude and longitude of ‘a’ as 20ºS 20ºE.

ALWAYS write these first

Write down the latitude and longitude of these places.

Latitude and Longitude

First find the name of the country you are looking for in the index.

The first bold number is the page location. The next double figure set of numbers is

the latitude line it will show a N or S. The next double set is exactly where on the

degree line it is to be found The next double figure set of numbers is

the longitude line, it will show E or W. The next double set is exactly where on the

degree line it is to be found .

Draw a table in your book with three columns; one for countries, one for latitude and the last for longitude

Country Latitude in degrees

Longitude in degrees

Australia

Complete the latitude and longitude worksheet.
