Timeline: February 23, 1868— Civil Rights leader and NAACP co-founder W.E.B DuBois is born February 3, 1870— The Fifteenth Amendment grants blacks the right to vote February 25, 1870— Hiram R. Revels takes an oath of office as the first black US senator February 12, 1909— The NAACP is founded by a concerned group of black and white New York City citizens
February 1926— Black History begins as "Negro History Week" and later as "Black History Month" February 1, 1960— In what becomes a civil-rights movement milestone, black Greensboro, NC college students begin a sit-in at a segregated Woolworth's lunch counter February 21 ,1965— Militant leader Malcolm X, who promoted black nationalism, is shot to death by three black Muslims 2009— Democrat Barack Obama is inaugurated as the first black US President after being elected at the end of 2008
In Honor of Black History Month: By Kevin Mooney
Born 1875 in New Canton, VA to parents who were former slaves, Dr. Carter G. Woodson spent his childhood working in the Kentucky coal mines and enrolled in high school at age twenty. He graduated within two years and later earned a Ph.D from Harvard. He was disturbed to find that history books largely ignored the black American population and that blacks generally figured into the picture in ways that reflected the inferior social position they were assigned at the time. Woodson, who was always one to act on his ambitions, decided to take on the challenge of writing black Americans into the nation's history. He established the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (now called the Association for the Study of Afro-American Life and History) in 1915 and founded the widely respected Journal of Negro History in 1916. 1926 was the year Woodson launched Negro History Week as an initiative to bring national attention to the contributions of black people throughout American history. Woodson chose the second week of February for Negro History Week because it marks the birthdays of two men - Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln - who greatly influenced the black American population. If you come into Bookworks! we have many books with information about African-American contributions to our nation's history.
Kevin Mooney is a STRIVE member who volunteers at BookWorks! on Thursday afternoons.
