SBDC HISTORY

Small Business Development Centers (Accredited) A grant program in existence since 1979, with approximately 1,100

offices throughout the 50 states, D.C., Guam, Puerto Rico and other US Territories.

Provides free and confidential consulting to existing and start-up businesses

Provides free or low cost training

South Dakota Small Business Development Center Partnership since 1985 between the SBA, the University of South

Dakota and the South Governor’s Office of Economic Development 8 offices state-wide with 12 consultants (Sioux Falls, Rapid City,

Aberdeen, Watertown, Yankton, Pierre, Brookings and Vermillion) Over 8,000 hours of consulting to more than 1,500 entrepreneurs

every year. Clients have injected over $654 Million in Capital into businesses in

the last 10 years, creating or retaining over 800 jobs annually

EI HISTORY & OBJECTIVES

The Institute was started in 2001 and has offices in Brookings and Sioux Falls.

The Enterprise Institute is a private, non-profit 501(c)3 corporation that provides business development and commercialization services to researchers, inventors and start-up companies in the region. 

The Institute provides confidential and free consulting through the Small Business Development Center and offers specialized fee-based services to entrepreneurs seeking equity financing and to researchers and inventors that need preliminary commercialization assistance.

SBIR HISTORY & OBJECTIVES

The SBIR program was created by congress in 1982

South Dakota SBIR program assists small businesses and entrepreneurs to identify and apply for federal grant opportunities to develop innovative new products and processes. Reserves 2.5% of Federal research dollars for small businesses

State Technology Transfer (STTR) Reserves .3% of federal research dollars

Supports high tech entrepreneurs with early seed-stage capital

Protects intellectual property rights

Enhances the research needs of our country
