DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY

In Chemical Engineering: Neehal Mooruth Thesis Title: Investigation towards passive treatment solutions for the oxidation of sulphide and subsequent sulphur removal from acid mine drainage

Neehal Mooruth has a BSc in Chemical Engineering from UCT. His 2010 MSc registration was upgraded to PhD in 2011. In 2012 he was awarded the prestigious Piet Vosloo Award for outstanding contribution to industrial wastewater treatment by the Water Institute of Southern Africa. Neehal Mooruth’s thesis investigates the fundamental engineering and microbiological aspects of a sustainable bioprocess for the treatment of acid mine drainage. He critically analyses existing pilot and demonstration-scale data, identifies shortcomings and develops novel reactor configurations and analytical techniques to address these. He characterises the hydraulic regime within the reactor and develops a conceptual model, supported by detailed analyses, for the delivery of sulphide to the reaction zone within the floating biofilm and its partial oxidation to elemental sulphur. Oxygen mass transfer into the biofilm is the second critical factor and he demonstrates the dynamic relationship between biofilm structure, oxygen penetration and sulphide oxidation rate. Efficient biofilm formation requires the correct microbial community and Neehal shows that the reactor feed must contain a critical level of dissolved organic carbon support this. The research concludes that the integrated process can address AMD from diffuse sources, with the recovery of a valuable sulphur product.

Supervisor: Dr R van Hille (Chemical Engineering)

Bulelwa Ntombezinhle Ndlovu Thesis Title: The effect of phyllosilicate mineralogy and surface charge on the rheology of mineral slurries

Bulelwa Ndlovu has a BSc in Chemical Engineering from UCT. She commenced her postgraduate studies in the Chemical Engineering Department within the Minerals to Metals Research Initiative Group in 2008. During her studies, she

has contributed to and helped supervise a number of undergraduate research projects and has worked in conjunction with other researchers from the University of British Columbia and the University of Melbourne.Bulelwa Ndlovu’s thesis examines the effects of surface charge and mineralogical properties on the flow behaviour (rheology) of select phyllosilicate minerals (muscovite, vermiculite, montmorillonite and chrysotile). These commonly exist as problematic gangue elements and often present processing issues during the beneficiation of low grade ores. The study reveals that the anisotropic surface charge properties affect the orientation of particles in suspension. It is also revealed that the phyllosilicate minerals hinder the flow behaviour of other minerals either by entrapment, the development of convoluted composites or the formation of voluminous distended structures. The differences in the behaviour of the minerals facilitated the development of a preliminary rheological classification of the phyllosilicate group minerals. The outcomes of this study are of fundamental interest to the mining and minerals processing industries which are resorting to the processing progressively challenging low grade ores.

Oluwafemi Ayokunle Olaofe Thesis Title: A bioprocess approach for enhanced biocatalytic activity and efficiency of whole cell e-coli expressing alkane hydroxylase CYP153A6 for terminal hydroxylation of noctane

Oluwafemi Olaofe has a BSc(Hons) in Biochemistry from the University of Ado-Ekiti, Nigeria and an MSc (Applied Science) in Chemical Engineering from UCT. The knowledge acquired during the MSc research on biocatalyst production in bacterial systems was transferred into his PhD studies, which involved the production of primary octanol from octane using cytochrome P450 (CYP153A6) produced in whole cell Escherichia coli BL21. Oluwafemi Olaofe’s thesis aims to produce high value chemical products

such as primary alcohol from linear alkanes available from expanding activities in the petrochemical industry using biocatalyst in an economical process. In the whole-cell based catalysis, the biocatalyst improvement through molecular and recombinant means is complemented with efficient novel bioprocess design to enhance process feasibility and economics. This study emphasises that the overall process efficiency in whole-cell catalysed organic synthesis is largely dependent on the interaction between the whole-cell biocatalyst and bioprocess conditions. Through provision of the requisite process conditions, informed by an understanding of the physiological requirements, a significant increase in biocatalytic activity and biocatalyst efficiency was achieved using CYP153A6 in whole-cell based biotransformation.

Supervisor: Professor STL Harrison (Chemical Engineering) Co-supervisor: Professor MS Smit (Microbial, Biochemical and Food Biotechnology, University of the Free State)

In Electrical Engineering: Jeanine Engelbrecht Thesis Title: Parameters affecting interferometric coherence and implications for long term operational monitoring of mining-induced surface deformation

Jeanine Engelbrecht has an MSc from the University of Stellenbosch. She has been a part-time PhD student at the Department of Electrical Engineering since August 2008. Jeanine Engelbrecht’s PhD thesis investigates the use of microwave imagery captured from earth-orbiting satellites to measure deformation caused by underground mining activities. Such deformation causes damage to infrastructure and poses environmental risks. Consequently, the early detection of deformation and the long-term monitoring of undermined areas are critical. Her investigation proves that the remote detection and monitoring of surface subsidence using satellite-based sensors is a possibility. However, noise introduced by evolving vegetative conditions and the relative position of the satellites at the time of image capture proved to be a limitation. Contrary to the hypothesis, noise optimisation algorithms failed to minimise

12 13

the decorrelation of the signal. Despite the limitations, surface deformation could be measured and the evolution of subsidence basins over time could be monitored. Consequently, the information derived from the analysis of microwave data will be useful for long-term monitoring efforts to guide future development planning and subsidence risk assessment.

Roaldje Nadjiasngar Thesis Title: On improving the performance of Gauss-Newton filter

Roaldje Nadjiasngar has a BSc in Electrical Engineering from UCT. His PhD research emerged as a result of thorough study of the Gauss-Newton filter. Roaldje Nadjiasngar’s thesis focuses on this tracking filter developed by Norman Morrison which initially received little attention. Nowadays computers have vast processing capacity and computation is no longer an issue. The filter finite memory length is identified as the key element in the filter adaptability and robustness. Roaldje Nadjiasngar focuses on improving the performance of the Gauss-Newton by first adapting the filter algorithm to the Levenberg-Marquardt method for improved convergence. Second, he obtained a recursive version of the filter in order to improve the computation requirements. The recursive version has an exponential forgetting factor, a substitute of the non-recursive filter memory length. It is shown that the iterated extended Kalman filter is a somewhat limited form of the recursive Gauss-Newton filter, being equivalent when the forgetting factor is equal to one. Stability analysis has demonstrated the necessity of having finite memory length, thus imposing a less than unity forgetting factor. The forgetting factor is updated by means of a memory control algorithm, similar to Morrison’s master control algorithm (MCA). The new compact filter retains the robustness and the adaptability of the non recursive filter, and stands out as a good candidate for tracking highly manoeuvring targets. The recursive filter is also adapted to the Levenberg Marquardt method.

Boyan Ventzislavov SoubachovThesis Title: Pilot patterns and power loading in NC-OFDM cognitive radios

Boyan Soubachov received his BSc(Eng) in Computer Engineering from the University of Pretoria in 2009. In 2010 he joined the Centre for Broadband Networks at the UCT in pursuit of an MSc(Eng), which was upgraded to a PhD in 2011. Boyan Soubachov’s thesis explores a contradiction found in Non Contiguous Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (NC-OFDM) cognitive radios. He identified the contradiction when investigating the practical implementations of pilot pattern algorithms and power loading algorithms when applied to cognitive radios. The problem involved the application of two different areas of research. It was found that this condition would exist for any practical implementation of an NC-OFDM cognitive radio and therefore needed to be successfully solved to allow for a practical implementation using the two important aspects of pilot patterns and power loading. From an extensive literature review of related work, it was also found that this issue had not been identified before and therefore proves to be a novel solution to a newly identified, crucial problem. Boyan Soubachov’s research also results in the development of an optimal solution for the identified contradiction and problem, providing a novel algorithm which could be used to solve the problem involved in using the optimal pilot patterns and optimal power loading algorithms for NC-OFDM cognitive radios for a successful practical implementation.
