Montevideo!

Montevideo is Uruguay’s capital which is located on the north bank of the Rio De La Plata. Montevideo was founded in 1726. It had been a Spanish fort. The original entrance gate still stands at Independence Plaza.

Climate!

Uruguay is often humid because its huge water source. The seasons are opposite from North America’s because it lies south of the equator. Their winters average temperature is 52˚F, and their summers average temperature is 73˚F. The rain fall is pretty even throughout the year.

Population and Currency!

Uruguay ‘s population is more than 3 million. 86% of Uruguay’s people are Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese. More than 90% of the people live in cities. Their currency is the Uruguayan peso.

Culture!Carnival was celebrated during the days of Mardi Gras, but now is

celebrated nonstop throughout the 28 days of February! Sometimes it continues into the middle of March! They have parades, and shows on tablados, which are stages that are built for the purpose of Carnival in different neighborhoods throughout the cities! These shows included people wearing costumes, with painted masks on their face. The performances mock current events, politics, and show business. Uruguay doesn’t have a official religion, but 47.1% people belong to the Roman Catholic church. People in Uruguay love beef! They prepare it in many different ways. Their most famous dish is barbecued beef. Pasta is usually served as the main dish with every meal. Easter is called Semana De Turismo, which means tourism week. The Uruguayans usually travel throughout the country to participate in local festivals.

• Uruguay's official name is República Oriental del Uruguay.

• The gaucho is a cowboy-like figure that symbolizes the country’s rugged independence.

• If a Uruguayan lives in a foreign country and is 18 or older, they have to return to their place of birth to vote.

Uruguay’s location

Uruguay is almost entirely surrounded by water. It is bordered by the Atlantic ocean and two rivers. Uruguay shares a northern border with Brazil and shares a western border with Argentina. It is located In South America.

Jorge Drexler

Jorge Drexler was born 1964 he was born in Montevideo, Uruguay’s capital. Although he was born and raised in Uruguay, his parents were originally from Germany. Before beginning his music career, he was practicing to be ear, nose, and throat specialist. He began his music career at age 30. his song “Al Otro Lado del Río” (to the other side of the river) was in the film The Motorcycle Diaries. It had been the first Spanish song to win an Academy Award.

The Gaucho

The gaucho is an national image. It is one of the most legendary symbol of Uruguay. A gaucho is a South American cowboy who were always on the move. Their lifestyle has changed somewhat, but they still symbolize the fierce, independent spirit of the nation.
