DEAR COLLEAGUES… Most of the professional development we are given is a “one shot” deal. We learn about something new and are then are expected to implement it in our classrooms. Yet research shows that less than 20% is applied in the classroom. Truly effective professional development is ongoing and deeply embedded in teachers’ classroom work with children. Through collaboration and co-teaching, this is where I would come in. For example, you would choose the subject/unit we work on together. It could be an old unit that that could use a new spark, or an entirely new unit that you’d like help exploring. You decide what would benefit you most. My philosophy is “two heads are better than one.” This process is intended to be positive, productive, and non- evaluative. Through co-teaching we would be learning from each other in an exchange of ideas, expanding our pedagogic knowledge together. Once or twice a week we would meet to talk about and reflect on the lessons we taught together. We would discuss the lesson and teaching methods, analyze assessments, and use this information to drive further instruction. We usually have so little time for reflection, but research has shown us how important it is in expanding our skills. Please consider inviting me in for a two-, three-, or four-week coaching cycle and we’ll venture out together. DEAR COLLEAGUES…

Most of the professional development we are given is a “one shot” deal.

My philosophy is “two heads are better than one.” This process is intended to be positive, productive,

and non-evaluative. Above the

Fold

“Educators need their own books of important stuff. We can’t learn everything. We can’t take every course, read every book, attend every conference. We must have priorities. We must be able to say, this is my year to learn ________________, and we will fill in that blank with one topic, one issue, one area of inquiry . . . Just as the “New York Times” places the most significant news stories above the fold, educators need to ask, “What’s above this fold?” “What’s most significant?” “What really matters for me at this point in time?” Setting limits and devoting big blocks of time to one area of study is the only way we can study issues deeply and lead scholarly lives.”

~ Shelly Harwayne, Going PublicAt the start of the year we get swept up in so many details, everything from organizing classrooms to scheduling parent events and fire drills. One of the most positive uses of all that fall energy and enthusiasm is to develop individual learning plans which can be sustained all year long. It is my hope that we can set aside a protected time to meet and reflect on your professional growth and learning and that I can help to facilitate the journey for you and your students. In the box below, please indicate days and times that would work for us to meet throughout the year. You may return this to my mailbox, email it back to me, or can collect it when I come around to visit your lovely students! Our initial conversation will be scheduled to begin in early October. I will contact you in person, so we can plan for our first meeting.
