THE FIRST WAY OF MUMMIFICATION

The earliest ancient Egyptians buried their dead and some of their belongings in small pits in the desert. The heat and dryness of the sand dehydrated their bodies quickly, creating natural 'mummies‘.

THE SECOND AND MORE ACCURATE WAY OF MUMMIFICATION

the ancient Egyptians began burying their dead in coffins to protect them from wild animals in the desert. However, they realized that bodies placed in coffins decayed when they were not exposed to the hot, dry sand of the desert. Over many centuries, the ancient Egyptians developed a method of preserving bodies so they would remain lifelike. The process included embalming (treat a dead body) so to preserve it with chemicals, drugs, or balsams. the bodies were wrapped in strips of linen. Today we call this process mummification.

WHY DID THE EGYPTIANS MUMMIFY THEIR DEAD?

It will preserve the bodies for use in the afterlife. The Egyptians believed that there were 6 important

aspects that made up the human being: the physical body, shadow, there name, ka [spirit], ba [personality], and akh [immortality ].

They believed that when the sprit is removed form body, the person will continue to live in on in the afterlife.

THE STEPS TO MUMMIFY A BODY

The mummification process took 70 days to complete

1st step Make sure the person is dead!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 2nd step all of the internal organs were

removed except the heart, the heart was left in the body because Egyptians believed that it contained intelligence and emotion. The removed organs were put in a jar and placed in the tomb at the time of the burial.

3RD STEP

The body was packed and covered with natron(a salty drying agent)and was left to dry out. After 40 -50 days all the bodies liquids would have been absorbed and only the hair, skin, bones and the heart would be left.

4TH STEP TO MUMMIFICATION

The body was then stuffed with resin, sawdust or linen and shaped to restore the form and features of the dead body then sewed up. They put onions or painted white stones in the eye sockets, and put beeswax in the nostrils. Then filled the parts were the organs used to be with herbs and spices.

THE LAST STEP TO MUMMIFICATION

The body is tightly wrapped in many layers of linen. Then the embalmers put jewelry and amulets between the layers of linen. They placed scarab-beetle amulet over the heart. At each stage of wrapping, a priest chants spells and prayers. After the wrapping is complete the body is put into a burial sheet called shroud and placed in a stone coffin called a sarcophagus.

Anubis was the ancient Egyptian god associated with mummification and burial rituals.

ANUBIS TAKES NAMES IN CONNECTION WITH HIS FUNERARY ROLE, LIKE MANY ANCIENT EGYPTIAN DEITIES, ANUBIS TAKES IN DIFFERENT ROLES IN VARIOUS CONTEXTS, AND NO PUBLIC PROCESSION IN EGYPT WOULD BE CONDUCTED WITHOUT AN ANUBIS TO MARCH AT THE HEAD.
