The 3.8-km exclusive bicycle track along P. T. Rajan Salai, Lak-shmanswamy Salai and Rama-swamy Salai has been constructed at a cost of Rs. 3 crores. The project has been delayed by over a year. Thousands of students of 8 schools and several tuition centers in the area are expected to be the majority of the beneficiaries. Corporation officials said that the project included widening of pavements, laying a smooth carriageway in concrete and introducing a bicycle track alongside the footpath as per Indian Roads Congress standards. According to a survey, about 1,000 cyclists use the stretch in an hour (before and after school hours) and the number is likely to increase after the opening of the bicycle track. The width of the pavement varies between 2m and 4.5m to ensure a safe cycling atmosphere. At present, the track is being misused for parking vehicles and the K. K. Traffic Police have, since March 1, started impounding vehicles and penalizing the owners who park their vehicles on the track. “Ahead of the move, we had conducted an awareness drive among the residents and shop owners. ‘No par- king’ sign boards are also being erected along the stretch”, said M. S. Bhaskar (Ins-pector, L&O, R7 Police Station). Since a number of shops, resta- urants, banks and ATMs line the street, the resi- dents have appe- aled for a parking solution on the street. Accordingly, the traffic police have now allowed parking of vehicles on the footpath on one side of the road on the condition that there is no encroachment on the bicycle track-cum-footpath on the opposite side. The delay of more than a year occurred as the project had run into opposition from private car operators and residents. While the car operators feared the widened pavement will eat into parking space, residents were against removal of ramps extending from their buildings to the footpath.

HAIRCAREGrandson Manu, a T.C.S employee, was sent by his

Bangalore company to the Obama-USA about 4 years agoto whet up the telephone system there. This was when theworld had not heard of Trump, not even the famous TrumpTowers.

Manu asked me if I needed something for personal use. Isaid that India has all the goods to make a man happy excepta machine that he could operate to cut his crowning glory(which I have in abundance) so that I need not go to the hair-cutting saloon every month or sooner since it seemed thatmore than half the food that I was taking for my body’ssustenance was directed to my head’s hair follicles resultingin repeated bumper crops that you can bet upon.

“Get me a hair trimmer”, I wrote to Manu, describing thekind I wanted, lest he should send one to his grandmotherLakshmi whose long hair was the envy of many girls. Hesent a plastic thin gamy with a convenient comb-like handlewith two kinds of cutting edges on a spatula-like toughenedplastic holder with two steel blades of different sizes screwedon - just the instrument to save me from the saloons!

This is now my home saloon and I am the decider and theexecutioner. I need not sit in a saloon chair full of bugs orwhile away time until the chaired victim is freed. I thankedManu heartily and, for the last five years, my cutter and Ihave been the best of friends, meeting in my hairy land atleast once a month. It may be the camaraderie that hascemented our friendship that, at 83, I still have a head fullof hair, though tinged with grey, since you can’t fight twowars with Nature at the same time.

People may imagine that a grey haired person is wise. Letthem, until proved the opposite.

Manu has returned and is getting married in April. I may,if my trimmer breaks, have to write to Trump for a new one.I hope my new crop will not turn orange!!

Tamil Cinema & Music 46Murugadasa (Muthuswami Iyer) made ‘Venugaanam’ which

was scripted by that neglected genius of Indian cinema, K.Ramnoth. The well-known Gemini Studio screenwriter, Ki. Ra( K. Ramachandran) wrote the dialogues while the lyrics wereby ‘Kamabadasan’, the Sri Lankan Tamil poet who was activein Tamil cinema in the bygone decades. G. GovindarajuluNaidu, a noted film music composer of that day, scored themusic.

‘Venugaanam’ had in its cast, besides Satagopan and N. C.Vasanthakokilam, noted artistes like K. Sarangapani, KulathuMani, A. Sakunthala (later Mrs. P. U. Chinnappa), S. M.Subbaiah and M. V. Mani. It was made at the Central Studios,Coimbatore which played a significant role in the history ofIndian cinema This film too did not help its hero because NCVreceived more prominence than Satagopan!

The most successful film for Satagopan was‘Madanakamarajan’ (1941). Produced by Dindigul AmrithamTalkies at Gemini Studios and bankrolled by S. S. Vasan, it wasthe first Tamil film to be made in that studio. It was a folk talewritten by B. S. Ramaiah, the noted writer and playwright ofhis day, and was directed by B. N. Rao. It had a fine cast withSatagopan as the hero and M. V. Rajamma, K. L. V. Vasantha,M.R. Swaminathan, T. S. Durairaj, M. S. Sundari Bai,Kothamangalam Subbu and others. The film was a solid hitand enjoyed three-month-long runs at many places. One songby Satagopan in Mohanam raagam ‘ Prema, Prema, NeeIllaamal Uranguvathengey....!’ became a hit. Indeed this songwas the only hit in Satagopan’s film career!

While ‘Madanakamarajan’ was being shot, Vasan producedhis first Telugu film ‘Jeevan Mukthi’ in which Satagopan wascast as Lord Vishnu. But he did not sing in this movie. A remakeof the Tamil film hit, K. Subramanyam’s ‘Bhaktha Chetha’(1940), the Telugu film flopped and was not screened at manyplaces. Indeed Vasan liked to forget this film!

Later Satagopan left movies and went back to his musicalcareer in which he fared better. He also taught music incolleges. He relocated himself in Delhi where he lived for someyears. He later wrote and set to music songs for children. Sadlyhis family life ran into problems and he walked out of a trainone day at a junction in Andhra Pradesh and was never seenagain. Indeed he has not been heard till today. Where is he? Noone seems to know. And it is all shrouded in mystery … Verysad indeed….

*******M. L. Vasanthakumari

One of the earliest behind-the-screen voice-lending female‘play-back’ singers of South Indian cinema, a top-rankingclassical Carnatic musician who created her own character-istic style or ‘baani’ of singing (a baani which still blooms inevery raga in her disciples like Sudha Raghunathan), M. L.Vasanthakumari was equally at home in singing a heavy raga-based movie song and a light, zippy nippy Hindi-movie orWestern music-based tune. Her inimitable voice was not onlymelodious but also highly malleable and ductile.

Such a musician par excellence was a brilliant disciple of thelegend that still lives, G. N. Balasubramaniam (GNB). Sheenjoyed a successful innings as a playback singer in Tamilcinema for over a decade during the 1940-1950s. Many of herfilm songs became hits and are heard, remembered, sung andhummed by many to this day.

The galaxy of MLV’s glittering movie-song-gems is large andsome of them are ‘Gopalanodu naan aaduven’ (‘Vaazhkai’,1949), ’Kannan mananilayai’ (‘Ezhai Padum Paadu’, 1950),‘Aahaha vaazhviley’ (Manthirikumari, 1950), ‘Ayya saamiaavojee saami’ (‘Oar Iravu’ 1951, one of MLV’s most popularsongs based on the film music maestro C. Ramchandra’s hitsong ‘ Gorey...gorey...’ in the Hindi movie ‘Samaadhi’ ), ‘Ellaaminba mayam’ (‘Manamagal’,1951, a duet with P. Leela, animmortal melody of Tamil cinema), ‘Chinnanchiru kiliyeKannamma’ (‘Manamagal’, 1951, a famous song written bythe Rebel Poet of India, Mahakavi Subramania Bharathiyar, duet with singing stage and screen actor of yester-decades, V.N. Sundaram), ‘Konjum puraavey’ (‘Thaai Ullam’, 1952), ‘Aadalkaaneero’ (‘Madurai Veeran’, 1956), ‘Ranga, Ranga, Ranga, manamohana’ (‘Mamiyar Mechhiya Marumagal’, 1959) and‘Aadaatha manamum vundo’ (Mannaathi Mannan, 1960).Most of these songs had a classical Carnatic music raga as thebase, thus contributing to their immortality ….

2-wheelers misuse pedestrian path under UsmanRoad flyover

Sir, Following theconstruction ofUsman Road flyoverin T. Nagar, crossingthe road beneath theflyover has become adifficult task.

If the residents ofthe streets abuttingUsman Road want tocross, they now haveto go either to Ranga-

nathan Street junction or use the narrow pathway diagonally oppo-site Venkatasean Street/Rangan Street junction.

This pathway, which is meant for the exclusive use of thepedestrians, is being misused by two-wheeler riders. They use it as ashort cut instead of using the wide space available opposite GRT andChennai Silks. Further, the pathway is also crowded with shoppersbuying goods spread by roadside vendors/hawkers beneath the flyover.

As walking itself is an uphill task on the crowded path, the 2-wheelersplying on them pose a danger. Further, the road is also riddled withobstacles like protruding manhole covers, bolts and nuts in severalspots. The other day, a 2-wheeler rider hit a pedestrian causinggrievous injury.

The authorities should erect barricades at both ends of the pathwayto prevent 2-wheelers from entering it. Only this will ensure the safetyof the pedestrians crossing the road under the flyover. V. S. Jayaraman,31, Motilal Street, T. Nagar

Drain cover damaged by passing vehiclesSir, There is an open

manhole chamber inthe middle of AnandanStreet, near NorthUsman Road, T.Nagar. Traffic policehave kept a barricadeon top of the chamberto caution motorists

The cover of thedrain often gets dam-aged as heavy vehiclesrun over it. The coverhad sunk into thechamber almost amonth back, and is yetto be replaced.

I appeal to Metro-water officials to cover

the opening immediately to prevent any untoward incident and also tostrengthen the mouth of the chamber to ensure that its cover does notget damaged by vehicles passing over it. Venkatraman, AnandanStreet, T. Nagar
