This sturdy, long-life pick-up is a unique, two-in-one combination. At work, its payload capacity, an . impressive 19'12cwt (990kg), high standard of engineering combined with a tough four-wheel drive system which makes it a truly go-anywhere vehicle, gives you maximum versatility and efficiency. But, with their expertise as the world's second largest car manufacturer, Toyota have ensured that, for the driver, there's no truck easier to handle or more pleasant to drive. It's a whole lot of truck with the home comforts ofa car.

Within the cab - there's ample room for driver and passenger - the adjustable bench seat with head restraints gives a comfortable driving position with all the instruments and main controls grouped neatly around the steering column. Fresh air vents at each end of the fascia and the high-performance heater/demister with 3-speed booster fan keeps the inside feeling just the way you want it. Sun visors cut out the glare, sound­proofing reduces noise and driver fatigue, colour co-ordination of seat, dash and door panels creates a pleasant relaxing environment.

The passenger glove compartment with wide shelfbeneath holds all the items you might need. Tool kit andjack are handily positioned behind the fold-forward seat back. To make things even better, there's now a MWILW radio fitted as standard. What more could you need to take the pressure out of the working day?

Though the Hi-Lux is as tough a truck as you're likely to find you'll get no rough treatment from it. This rugged performer is light on the driver, handling with all the ease of a lively saloon. The re-designed, chunky 3-spoke steering wheel gives just the right amount offeel and is comfortable to handle even on the hottest of days. The main floor­mounted gear lever is perfectly positioned for easy selection of the synchromesh gearbox. Just behind the main gear-lever is the secondary lever controlling the 2 or 4-wheel drive, high or low ratio, to cope with any type of terrain. In addition, the Hi-Lux 4WD is fitted with free­wheeling front hubs for increased economy, smoothness and silence.

The proven overhead cam 2-litre engine provides power to spare with a top speed of over 80mph. It cuts costs, too, working happily on 2-star petrol. The leaf-sprung suspension with rear, double acting shock absorbers has been developed to give safe handling in all conditions a well as a smooth ride. Reassuring, sure stopping power, whatever the speed, is . provided by the large front disc brakes and rear drum brakes operated by independent circuits.

All-round visibility is excellent with a generous cab glass area, rear view mirror and two large door­mounted mirrors. 2-speed wipers with intermittent wipe plus electric screen wash keep the windscreen clear, regardless of the weather. Mud flaps are fitted behind all four wheels to help reduce spray.

Safe and sure handling is enhanced by the other built-in safety features such as doublejointed steering column, brake fluid level warning lamp, fuel tank mounted within the chassis frame and protected by a sturdy guard and a rail to protect driver and passengers from a load shift in the event of an accident or emergency braking.

Built to work - and to stay at work - the Hi-Lux 4-wheel drive easily copes with a 191h cwt payload, (which includes driver and passengers).

The wheelbase-llO.2ins (2800mm) - means there is 33.5sq.ft. of steel deck with a maximum length of86ins (2185mm) and a generous width of 56 ins (1430mm). Sturdy, 16in split-rim pressed steel wheels add a robust, practical touch. Loads

stay in position with the help of fitted ladder stops and the hinged tailgate is held by two powerful swivelling handles.

The Toyota Hi-Lux 4WD doesn't need time off as maintenance is easy and protective features include plastic liners to keep the front wheel arches free from corrosion, the use of rust­prevention oil and galvanised sheet steel for over 50 parts ofbodywork. Even on cold days, it's eager to start thanks to the reduction starter motor, the automatic choke and 12 Voltl60 Amplhr battery. Regular major servicing is at 10,000 mile intervals only.

Away from work, the Hi-Lux 4WD takes happily to leisure time too. It will tow up to 27 1h cwt (1400kg)

-to standard rear-wheel drive for lower fuel consumption, longer life and quieter running. Y oujust disconnect the front wheel drive line by the single operation offree-wheeling the front hubs. Locking or unlocking the front hubs takes only a few seconds, and does not require any tools.

For climbing steep slopes - and coming back down again safely­driving in deep snow, sand or mud, simply lock up the front hubs and select L4. This engages a high ratio with a 2.2771:1 step-down giving you the extra power you need..
