AGENDA Windows XP and why? What is OSD? What is SCCM OSD? What is a successfully OSD (IT Perspective) / (End-user

Perspective) What we need to consider Concepts Demo

Page 5: @ TheDesktopTeam @ dotRaphael Raphael@rflsystems.co.uk

WINDOWS XP AND WHY? Application Compatibility User Experience

Page 6: @ TheDesktopTeam @ dotRaphael Raphael@rflsystems.co.uk

WHAT IS OSD?

- Operating System Deployment / Operating System Distribution

- Old School- Everything in a base image- Many base images- Difficult to manage and maintain- Difficult to update and make changes- Difficult to test- Rely on old way of thinking

Page 7: @ TheDesktopTeam @ dotRaphael Raphael@rflsystems.co.uk

WHAT IS SCCM OSD?

- Device / OSD life cycle- Module- Small base image- Easy to manage and maintain- Easy to update and make changes- Easy to test

Page 8: @ TheDesktopTeam @ dotRaphael Raphael@rflsystems.co.uk

WHAT IS A SUCCESSFULLY OSD(IT PERSPECTIVE)- 90%+ of success- Quick and less network utilization- Meet SLA- Fully updated and automated- END USER PROOF

Page 9: @ TheDesktopTeam @ dotRaphael Raphael@rflsystems.co.uk

WHAT IS A SUCCESSFULLY OSD(END-USER PERSPECTIVE)- All my applications are still there- All my files are still there- Everything I had before (even I never used it) is still there- Everything I need to do my job is ALREADY there- I’M PART OF IT

Page 10: @ TheDesktopTeam @ dotRaphael Raphael@rflsystems.co.uk

WHAT WE NEED TO CONSIDER Application/Application Upgrade Unknown applications Backup/Recovery Unknown file location BYOD (ie. Supportability, Licensing, etc) Security (ie. Disk encryption, etc)

Understand your company and what your users needs are and what your users are

allowed to do

Page 11: @ TheDesktopTeam @ dotRaphael Raphael@rflsystems.co.uk

HOW WE DO IT? Understand your company and what your users needs and what

your users are allowed to do

CONCEPTS (1) Boot Image: A small “windows” image used to boot the computer

into the WinPE OS and initialize the connection to the SCCM Operating System Images: is the Windows Imaging Format (WIM)

files that contain OS images. Windows Setup Answer file: is an XML file that contains setting

definitions and values to use during Windows Setup. The answer file for Setup is typically called Unattend.xml.

Driver: computer program that operates or controls a particular type of device that is attached to a computer

Page 13: @ TheDesktopTeam @ dotRaphael Raphael@rflsystems.co.uk

CONCEPTS (2) Build and Capture Process: Process to build a base image (also

known as Gold Image) with core applications and software updates Applications

not customized by environment (ie Active Directory) used by ALL users not subject to frequent updates will not be replaced by other application soon

Software Updates All updates approved by the time the gold image is created

Page 14: @ TheDesktopTeam @ dotRaphael Raphael@rflsystems.co.uk

CONCEPTS (3) Deploy Process: Process to deploy the gold image with applications

and customizations based on environment customizations Applications

Applications needed by the user, computer or environment (ie. Active Directory)

used by the user’s of the machine subject to frequent updates

Software Updates All updates approved and not contained in the gold image

Page 15: @ TheDesktopTeam @ dotRaphael Raphael@rflsystems.co.uk

CONCEPTS (4) Task Sequence

Sequence of tasks performed by SCCM that automatizes the OS Deployment process

Examples: Format and Partition disk Install Operating System Install Applications Install Software Updates Install Drivers

Page 16: @ TheDesktopTeam @ dotRaphael Raphael@rflsystems.co.uk

ATTENTION

SCCM AUTOMATE “STUFF” THAT YOU TELL

IT TO AUTOMATE

Page 17: @ TheDesktopTeam @ dotRaphael Raphael@rflsystems.co.uk

ATTENTION

DO NOT BLAME SCCM IF YOU DEPLOY AN OS TO

ALL SYSTEMS AND EVERY SYSTEM GETS

WINDOWS 7/8.1
