It’s Marine Corps Birthday season and we are ramping up for our big celebration on November 10th. With the success we had at last years event, we decided to bring the party back to the American Legion #142, plus we kicked it up a notch, or two. This year we are fortunate to have Iraq War and Desert Storm veteran, Master Sergeant Abuid Montes, as our Guest of Honor. Msgt. Montes is currently a Military Advisor to NMCB-22, and I’ve been told, he can give one hell of a speech, so you might not want to miss this. Also, Hugh’s Culinary will provide the dinner buffet, and we welcome back the Deerfield Beach High School, Marine JROTC , who will provide the color guard and assist in the Cake Cutting Ceremony. So, please mark your calendar for Saturday November 10th, starting with cocktails at 6:00 p.m. at the American Legion #142. See page 3 for further details. Additionally, we have brought back the Marine Corps Birthday program ad book, as one of our fundraising items. As many of you know, we have always used the program ad sales campaign, as the one time of the year we raise funds to cover our operating expenses. At our last meeting, we asked that every member make an effort to sell an ad or booster to support the event. If you have not received a copy of our Program Ad Application, you can find a copy on page 9. Finally, I would like to thank Paymaster Harry Delaney, Cmdr. George Rafajko, and the ladies of the Unit 1058 Auxiliary, for all of their hard work and cooperation with putting the Birthday Celebration together. The next time you see any of them, be sure to tell them “thank you”. Before we close, we ask that you keep Marine Tom Depretoro in your thoughts and prayers, as he has fallen ill and is hospitalized. MCL National Commandant

September 22nd, 2012

I want to begin my column this month by giving a special thanks to the P.L. Wilson Detachment along with A.B Granthamand Joe Fell for one outstanding 89th National Convention. Talk about Southern Hospitality, Mobile had plenty of it.

I think that being from the Midwest and having all that seafood available, Gerri and I indulged in more seafood that weekthan we have in many years, dating back to when we lived back on the East Coast.

I've made some changes to the National Staff roster appointing some Marines to Chair certain Committees and some toserve as members of various committees. Please keep in mind those appointments to a National Committee is a privilegeand you are there to serve the members and carry out the assignments expected of you for that particular committee.

I recently had the opportunity to address a group of Shriners in Bay City, Michigan. I spoke about the history of the MarineCorps League, our armed forces serving in harm’s way today and about the importance of supporting our troops anddisplaying more Patriotism in our country, which I believe is desperately needed these days.

September brought us to Modern Day Marine at Quantico which began with a Golf Outing sponsored by the YoungMarines and the U. S. Marines Youth Foundation. The League sponsored both a hole and a team in the outing which everyyear is a great fundraiser for the Young Marine Program and the U. S. Marines Youth Foundation. The Expo again thisyear hosted more than 650 exhibits. Hats off to the Nielson folks, Col. Jim Bracken, Charlie Baisley, Jamie Amos-Nielsenand the staff of wonderful folks that makes these Expos a success year after year.

As your National Commandant, I will be attending the wreath laying ceremony on November 10th at the Iwo Jima WarMemorial along with the National President and the Executive Director. On this 237th Birthday of our Corps, I want to wisheach and every one a Happy Birthday. As you celebrate the birth of our Corps with your Departments and Detachments, please remember our troops in harm’s way who may be unable to celebrate our Corps' Birthday this year as they continuecombat operations in many of the trouble spots around the globe. Keep them in your prayers and pray for their safe returnhome to their families.

On November 11th, the National President, the Executive Director and I will attend the Veterans Day Ceremony atArlington National Cemetery where it will be an honor to once again to place a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Solider.

On November 12th, I hope to see many of our Marine Corps League members at the dedication of the new Chesty Pullerstatue in Semper Fidelis Park, located on the grounds of the National Museum of the Marine Corps. We are still lookingfor members to purchase a brick that will be placed on the walkway near the statue. Applications for bricks are availablein this issue of the Semper Fi magazine at a discounted price of $210.00 each.

Reason being, thathe was not getting enough positive feedback from the members, and the lack of volunteer’s for the many responsibilities, required of putting on aformal affair of this size and expense. 2012 USMC Birthday Celebration

Pendleton honors Korean War veterans10/2/2012 By Lance Cpl. Derrick K. Irions , Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton

MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. — In 1950, U.S. PresidentHarry S. Truman authorized a strategic yet dangerous amphibious assault. U.S.forces navigated the tidal flats of northern Inchon's Red Beach surprising aninvading North Korean Army and vaulting themselves into the Korean War.

Camp Pendleton hosted the 62nd Memorial Anniversary of the Korean War at thePacific Views Event Center to honor the veterans who fought during the Landing on Inchon, in the streets of Seoul and in thenorthern mountains near the Chosin Reservoir, Sept. 22.

The Korean War began on June 25, 1950, when 90,000 North Korean troops advanced across the 38th Parallel, forcing theRepublic of Korea's forces to retreat. Three days later, forces from the United States and United Nations entered the conflictagainst the North Korean Army.

"Our gathering here today is for a memorial and remembrance of the passing of Col. William E. Barber chapter members who tookpart in that famous battle, Chosin Reservoir, during November (and) December, 1950," said Bob Licker, the reunion coordinatorand national president of The Chosin Few Association.

By the end of the war, approximately 150,000 troops from South Korea, the U.S. and the U.N. were killed and more than one millionSouth Korean civilian lives were taken.

"We get together each year to remember the Marines that have fought and died in the Korean War, since the Korean War, thosewho were (prisoners of war) and those who are now considered missing in action," said Licker. "We keep their memory alivebecause ‘once a Marine, always a Marine’ even in the hereafter."

Each Korean War veteran who passed away during the past year was individually mentioned and honored with a moment of silenceand a toll of a remembrance bell.

"The Korean War veterans present today all contributed to the success of the Marine Corps during that conflict and added anotherchapter in the rich history of the U.S. Marine Corps," said Col. Paul A. Miller, the assistant chief of staff with G-6, I MarineExpeditionary Force.

During the ceremony a 21-gun salute from five 105mm Howitzers rang out; in some ways, bringing veterans right back to thosefamous Korean battles.

These howitzers saved many lives by pushing back enemy assaults, Licker said.

"None of the men knew that the Howitzers were going to do the salute," said Licker. "They were as proud as can be to see that the"105s" are still out there and are still firing, because those were the ones that supported us."

With a peace treaty never being signed by the North and South Korean nations, many look at the war as an inane conflict.

"We won that war," said Sgt. Maj. (retired) Mike "Iron Mike" Mervosh. "Thinking back on it, South Korea is free today and thatproves that we didn't fight in vain."
