A galaxy of political per- sonalities, cor- porate honchos, film stars, Chief Ministers, and heads of BIMSTEC countries will watch President Ram Nath Kovind administer the oath of office and secrecy to 68-year- old Narendra Modi and his ministerial colleagues at the forecourt of majestic Rashtrapati Bhavan on Thursday. “This is for the first time that 8,000 guests will be attend- ing the swearing-in ceremony that will be held from 7 pm to 8.30 pm on Thursday,” said Rashtrapati Bhavan spokesper- son Ashok Malik. The swear- ing-in ceremony will last about 90 minutes and after that a dinner will be served to around 40 dignitaries, including Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu and the Prime Minister, besides leaders of all BIMSTEC (Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi- Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation) coun- tries, said Malik. He said it will be the biggest event held in Rashtrapati Bhavan ever. About 4,500-5,000 guests have attend- ed such ceremonies earlier. There will be light snacks for the guests like paneer tikka, the official said. “Dal Raisina, a speciality of Rashtrapati Bhavan’s kitchen, is cooked for about 48 hours. Its main ingredients are brought from Lucknow. The prepara- tions for Dal Raisina started on Tuesday and it will be served to foreign delegates in a dinner to be hosted by the President,” the spokesperson said. Leaders of all BIMSTEC countries have confirmed their participation. Mauritius Prime Minister Pravind Kumar Jugnauth and Kyrgyz President Sooronbay Jeenbekov, President of Bangladesh Abdul Hamid, Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena, and Prime Minister of Nepal K P Sharma Oli too have confirmed their attendance. President of Myanmar U Win Myint and Bhutanese Prime Minister Lotay Tshering too have confirmed their atten- dance. From Thailand, its Special Envoy Grisada Boonrach will represent the country at the ceremony. Congress president Rahul Gandhi and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, besides former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will attend the event, party sources said. The hectic consultations were on for the Cabinet for- mation as Prime Minister reached out and met senior BJP colleague Arun Jaitley to persuade him to reconsider his decision to opt out of the Cabinet. Jaitley had earlier in the day written a letter to the Prime Minister that he would not be able to take Government responsibilities on account of his health conditions. On the eve of the Government formation, sus- pense mounted on who all will get the Big Four berths — Home, Finance, Defence and External Affairs — as sources maintained that “non-per- forming Ministers” of previous regimes may be dropped. Arvind Sawant, Shiv Sena MP from Mumbai South, will be sworn in as Union Minister on Thursday, a senior party leader said. He will replace Anant Geete, the lone Sena Minister in the previous Government, who lost from the Raigad Lok Sabha seat in last month’s elec- tion, the leader said on Wednesday. Meanwhile, Bihar Chief Minister and JD(U) leader Nitish Kumar met BJP presi- dent Amit Shah to discuss par- ticipation of the JD(U) in the Cabinet as the latter continued its consultations with his senior party colleagues on the issue. JD(U) spokesperson KC Tyagi said his party will be rep- resented in the Government but declined to comment on the details of its likely repre- sentation. Kumar held a meet- ing with his party’s office- bearers. JD(U) leaders are of the view that the party may get two berths, one with Cabinet rank and another with Minister of State profile. However, there has been no official word on the JD(U)’s likely representa- tion in the Government. Another BJP ally from Bihar, Lok Janshakti Party, is likely to be represented by its president Ram Vilas Paswan in the Government. The LJP had passed a resolution on Tuesday, naming him as its representa- tive in the Government. According to sources, a number of senior BJP Ministers of the Modi-1 would again be inducted into the Modi-2 council of Ministers. Sushma Swaraj, who had voluntarily decided not to contest Lok Sabha polls, may make a come- back as Modi had praised her work as Foreign Minister. A Delhi court on Wednesday reserved for June 3 its order on application of Robert Vadra, accused in a money laundering case, to travel abroad. Vadra told the court as per Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, he has a “small tumour in the large intestine for the further man- agement of which he can take a second opinion in London.” Opposing the plea, saying the medical condition was merely a pretext to go where laundered money is parked, ED said, “We got an opinion based on his medical report... It’s a routine medical condition, that neither needs to be operated nor does it need treatment. It is not the case that the treat- ment is not available in India.” T ime magazine, which pub- lished a cover story before the Lok Sabha elections calling Prime Minister Narendra Modi the “Divider in Chief”, has in a quick about-face run report with a headline, “Modi has united India like no Prime Minister in decades”. The article with that head- line published on its website on Tuesday, asked, “How has this supposedly divisive figure not only managed to keep power, but increase his levels of sup- port?” and answered, “A key factor is that Modi has man- aged to transcend India’s great- est fault line: the class divide”. The writer, Manoj Ladwa, credited Modi’s emergence as a unifier to his origins in a back- ward caste — a factor missed or deliberately omitted by the Western media obsessed with what they call upper caste domination. “Narendra Modi was born into one of India’s most disad- vantaged social groups,” he explained. “In reaching the very top, he personifies the aspirational working classes and can self-identify with his country’s poorest citizens in a way that the Nehru-Gandhi political dynasty, who have led India for most of the 72 years, simply cannot.” “Yet despite the strong and often unfair criticisms levelled at Modi’s policies, no PM has united the Indian electorate as much in close to five decades,” he said referring to Indira Gandhi’s massive 1971 victory. The pre-poll cover story by Aatish Taseer was turned into campaign fodder in India and acclaimed by Modi’s critics as an indictment of him as a “divider” by a global media powerhouse. In reality, Time is an ailing magazine that has changed hands twice in a year — bought in March last year by Meredith, the publisher of magazines like Better Homes and Gardens, and All Recipes, it was sold in again in September to tech entrepre- neur Marc Benioff, the founder of Salesforce, and his wife. T he Congress continues to be in a state of turmoil with its chief Rahul Gandhi sticking to his offer to resign as party president even as hundreds of party workers sat on a hunger strike outside his Tuglak Lane residence here to convince him against quitting. The Congress has formed a committee to sug- gest names of leaders to replace Rahul and is also exploring the option of appointing a set of working presidents. The party leaders are now digging up the precedents and have zeroed in on how the then Prime Minister and Congress chief Indira Gandhi had appointed a working president in Kamalapati Tripathi after the party’s rout in southern States. The party leadership has also taken cognizance of the presence of working presidents in some of the State units, including Delhi, to repeat the example at the Central level. The crisis in the Congress showed no signs of easing with Rahul sticking to his decision to resign as party chief after its Lok Sabha poll debacle and staying away from meeting party leaders. Since the Congress Working Committee last week authorised Rahul to restructure the party after the poll debacle, the proposal to create a post of Congress work- ing president is doing the rounds. While maintaining it is up to Rahul to take a final deci- sion, a senior AICC leader recalled that Indira had appointed Kamalapati as work- ing president after the Congress’ debacle in the south in 1983. “Later then party chief Rajiv Gandhi made Arjun Singh Congress vice president amid Rajiv’s worsening ties with Tripathi. Rahul’s no roll- back decision is also being seen in the context of the fact that his mother Sonia Gandhi had insisted on quitting when her leadership was questioned by Sharad Pawar and couple of others in 1999 leading to breakaway of the grand old party,” said the leader. Congress workers gath- ered outside chief Rahul’s residence on Wednesday urg- ing him to withdraw his offer to resign. A day after saying that she will attend Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s swearing-in ceremony, Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee did an about-turn. Her decision comes in the wake of the BJP inviting saf- fron supporters whose kin were allegedly murdered by Trinamool Congress workers. About 54 “special invitees” from a various villages of the State on Wednesday left for Delhi by Rajdhani Express. Meanwhile, one of TMC’s prominent Muslim faces and Labpur MLA Monirul Islam joined the BJP on Wednesday. She tweeted, “Congratulations, new Prime Minister Narendra Modiji. It was my plan to accept ‘consti- tutional invitation’ and attend the oath-taking ceremony. However, in the last one hour, I am seeing media reports that the BJP is claiming 54 people have been murdered in political violence in Bengal. This is completely untrue. There have been no political murders in Bengal. These deaths may have occurred due to personal enmity, family quarrels and other disputes.” P rime Minister-designate Narendra Modi called on senior party leader Arun Jaitley at his resi- dence late on Wednesday evening and asked him to reconsider his earlier decision to opt out of the Cabinet on health ground. On the eve of the swear- ing-in ceremony of the new BJP Government, Jaitley wrote to the Modi saying he would not like to take ministerial responsibilities in his new Government on account of his health conditions. Jaitley posted on Twitter the letter he wrote to Modi requesting recusal from being a part of the new NDA Government. Jaitley said soon after BJP won a massive majority in the just-concluded Lok Sabha elections, he informed Modi orally about his intentions of taking time out for treatment of an undisclosed ill- ness. A State level committee will resolve the issues of farm- ers. It will coordinate between farmers and the State Government. Chief Minister Kamal Nath announced to set up the committee while talking to representatives of Bhartiya Kisan Mazdoor Mahasangh at Samanvay Bhavan here on Wednesday. In response, Chairman of the Mahasangh Dev Narayan Patel announced to call off its proposed strike. Minister for Agriculture Sachin Yadav, National President of Mahasangh Shiv Kumar Sharma were present. Addressing the represen- tative farmers, Kamal Nath said that it is top priority of the state government to address all the issues related to farmers and farm sector. About 65 per- cent population of the state is associated with agriculture sec- tor. The economy of state can- not be strengthened without making farm sector prosper- ous. The state will make progress only when farmers' purchasing power increases. Loan waiving is a radical step in this direction. The Chief Minister said that misinformation campaign was carried regarding loan waiving. The State Government's only concern is that all eligible farmers get the benefit of loan waiving. He said that if there are some confusion among the farmers regarding practical difficulties and hur- dles in the process of loan waiv- ing, the state government is alert and prompt to resolve them. He urged the farmers to apprise their problems, sug- gestions and possible solutions to the Agriculture Minister. The State Government will act promptly. He said that it is believed that farmers are born and die in debt. The State Government is committed to ending this belief permanently. Showing keen interest on the issues of veg- etable, fruit and milk produc- ing farmers, he said that a sep- arate meeting will be organized to look into their issues. Describing the process of loan waiving as a radical step, Nath said that loan upto Rs 2 lakh will be waived complete- ly, the farmers whose loan amount exceeded Rs two lakh did not get banks' no-dues certificate. The Chief Minister said that Government of India's cooperation will be needed to galvanize the farm sector. National president of Bhartiya Kisan Mazdoor Mahasangh Shivkumar Sharma Kakkaji appreciated the initia- tive of the Chief Minister to hold a dialogue with the farm- ers. He said that when Kamal Nath was the Union Minister, he fought with full determina- tion on global forums like WTO for protection of the interests of Indian farmers due to which not only did the import of many crops includ- ing wheat, gram, cotton stopped but export of the pro- duce of Indian farmers became possible. He hoped that soon the government will take suit- able decision on this. Dev Narayan Patel termed the dialogue as meaningful and expressed satisfaction. In a rare gesture, a kidneyswap was successfully con-

The surgery was performedby doctors led by DrPriyadarshi Ranjan, Consultantwith Fortis Hospital in Mohali,Punjab.

The families of ManjulaDevi from Bihar and AbdulAziz from Kashmir were look-ing for suitable donors since thespouses' kidneys were a poormismatch for each other, thehospital said in a statement.

The families crossed pathswithin three months after theygot themselves registered in amobile app iKidney which isdeveloped by Ranjan.

After conducting all requi-site tests and examinations, experts opined that the kidneyof donor Sujeet Kumar (46),husband of Devi (42), was agood match for Aziz. Similarly, the kidney of donor Shazia(50), wife of Aziz (53), was agood match for Devi.

Both families agreed toundergo surgeries for a pairedkidney exchange.

"Both the families are

extremely happy as the patientsare recovering and respondingwell to the post-surgery treat-ment. This fortunate matchingwas possible through iKidneyapp that explores for possiblepaired kidney exchangebetween eligible donors andpatients," Dr Ranjan said whiletalking to the mediapersonshere.

The Enforcement Directorate(ED) will soon take posses-

sion of a land worth Rs 64.93crore in Panchkula, allotted tothe Congress party promotedAssociated Journals Limited(AJL) by the Haryana govern-ment in 2005, after a quasi-judi-cial authority under the anti-money laundering law recentlyapproved its order, the agencysaid on Wednesday.

It alleged that the plot wasillegally reallotted by formerHaryana Chief Minister andCongress leader BhupinderSingh Hooda to AJL by "blatantlymisusing his official position".

The central probe agencyhas issued a provisional attach-ment order under the Preventionof Money Laundering Act(PMLA) on December 1 last yearfor attaching the plot located atC-17, Sector-6 in Panchkula.

On the same day, the CentralBureau of Investigation filed acharge sheet against Hooda andothers for allegedly using fraud-ulent means to allot land to theAJL.

The AJL is controlled bysenior Congress leaders, includ-ing members of the Gandhifamily. The group runs theNational Herald newspaper.

“...Since the value of plotfraudulently allotted to the AJLhas represented proceeds ofcrime, the ED has attached plotunder the PMLA Act,” the EDhad said in a statement.

Now, the ED said onWednesday, that theAdjudicating Authority of thePMLA "has held that defendantshave committed the scheduleoffence, generated proceeds ofcrime and further found that theproperties attached are proceedsof crime beyond any doubt andthereby ordered for confirmationof the provisional attachmentsorder".

With this approval, the EDis empowered to take possessionof the land and erect its author-ity signage over the plot that dis-allows any trespass or activity byanybody over the asset. However, the plot can be final-ly transferred to the governmentexchequer once the trial in thecase concludes in favour of theagency, officials said.

The agency said the plot wasallotted to AJL first in 1982. Butthe same was resumed back bythe estate officer of the HaryanaUrban Development Authority(HUDA) by an order in October,1992 as AJL did not comply withthe conditions of allotment let-ter, it said.

“However, Hooda blatantlymisused his official position anddishonestly allotted the said plotafresh in the guise of reallotmentto the AJL at original rates plusinterest in violation of necessaryconditions and policy of HUDAby an order of August 28, 2005for Rs 59,39,200,” the EDcharged. The actual value of theproperty is about Rs 64.93 crore,it said. “The then CM (Hooda)caused wrongful loss to HUDAand wrongful gain to AJL byignoring legal opinion of LR,Haryana and recommendationsof HUDA officers and financialcommissioner and principal sec-retary, Town and CountryPlanning,” it said.

The agency also said itsprobe found that Hooda "grant-ed undue extensions thrice toAJL for construction of the saidplot and after acquisition pro-jected it as untainted propertyand further acquired loans fromthe bank by way of mortgagingthe same from time to time".

The CBI charge sheet, filedbefore a Panchkula court onDecember 1 last year, namedCongress leader Motilal Vorabesides Hooda in connectionwith the alleged irregularities inthe case.

An order restricting theServices personnel from

buying cars priced over Rs 12lakh from Canteen StoresDepartment (CSD) of theDefence Ministry has led toresentment amongst the serv-ing and retired personnel withveterans seeking the rollback ofthe directive immediately. Therestrictions will be enforcedfrom June one this year. Earlier, there was no such cap if thevehicle was bought from CSD.

As per a letter issued by theQuartermaster General’s Branchat Army Headquarters on May24, starting from June, onlyvehicles with an engine capaci-ty of up to 2,500 CC and cost-ing up to Rs 12 lakh (excludingGST) will be available throughCSD for armed forces personnelin the pay level of 10-18.

The frequency of purchaseas per the new directive hasalso been reduced to one vehi-cle in eight years. Earlier, it wasonce in four years.

Those in the pay level of3A to 9 can purchase vehicleswith a capacity of up to 1,400CC that cost within Rs 5 lakh. The purchases can be madeonce during service and onceafter retirement, with the gapbeing eight years. Services per-sonnel in uniform and civiliansemployed in Defence estab-lishments are eligible forexemption from GST on thevalue of the car in addition tothe regular cash benefits.

Justifying the restriction, officials said there was a needto regulate and balance theCSD budget since a majorchunk was taken away by carsand other high-priced items. Moreover, the change in poli-cy to extend subsidized CSDfacilities to retired Defencecivilians besides personnelbelow officer rank being alsoallowed to buy cars increasedthe burden on CSD budget, they said.

Terming this decision as ill-treatment, the veterans saidsuch restrictions are not applic-able to personnel of centralarmed police forces besidescentral and police organisationswho avail of subsided facilitiesthrough Central Police Canteen(CPC). Moreover, the policepersonnel can buy cars of anyprice tag and capacity andtime period is four years, theysaid adding the new rule will

affect the morale of the armed forces personnel asmany young officers aspire tobuy SUVs and other such vehi-cles priced beyond the Rs 12lakh tag.

The Indian Ex-ServicemenMovement (IESM), which isleading the campaign for OneRank, One Pension (OROP)and is one of the biggest groups

of former servicemen, has writ-ten to the Army headquarters, calling for a rollback. It addedthat the new policy is against theterms and conditions of service.

“The customers are payingcost of the vehicle before deliv-ery, then what is the need offunds. CSD neither purchasescars nor stocks cars like groceryitems,” it said.

Chief Election CommissionerSunil Arora on Wednesday

rejected criticism that the pollbody gave clean chit to PrimeMinister Narendra Modi andBJP chief Amit Shah on com-plaints related to Model codeviolations due to its “bias”, say-ing it was decided on merit anddisapproved fellowCommissioner Ashok Lavasaraising the issue of dissent in themiddle of the poll exercise.

Arora also said there are“times to remain quiet andtimes to speak up”, indicatingthat the issue could have beenraised post elections.

In an interview to PTI, theCEC said he is not a “moraljudge of anybody, least of allsomebody as senior as Lavasa”.

“Whatever may have beenhis misgivings or feelings, ulti-mately none of us can tell a lieto ourselves,” Arora said, whilenoting that all the members ofthe poll body are not supposedto be “photo copies” of eachother.

Asked whether the contro-versy relating to Lavasa’s dissentwas ‘avoidable’ during elections,Arora replied, “I did not start thecontroversy ... I had said that elo-

quence of silence is always dif-ficult but far more desirable tosee the election process throughinstead of creating ill-timedcontroversies.... And I stand bythat.” He also reiterated that allthe three members of EC are notexpected to be template orclones of each other.

“Whether it is this ECI orpast ECIs, people are not pho-tocopies of each other. Butthere are times for everything, time to speak, time to remainquiet,” he said.

Citing a legal opinionobtained by the Commissionfrom its former legal adviser SKMendiratta, Arora asserted themodel code violation com-plaints do not fall in the cate-gory of quasi-judicial cases.

“It is the law. It is the lawof the land. Cases related to

symbols of parties and refer-ences received for the Presidentand Governors are quasi judi-cial where both the sides arerepresented by counsels.

“MCC by definition isshort-lived. There is hardlyany time for a proper quasi-judicial hearing,” he said, adding that the opinions of thethree — the CEC and the twofellow commissioners — arealways noted on files.

“When we formally com-municate the decision, whetherit is a 2:1 majority decision orunanimous, we don’t write onthat (order). UPSC (UnionPublic Service Commission)too is a multi-member body. When they fail or pass a can-didate, they just inform aboutthe result but never mentionabout which member wrotewhat,” Arora said to drivehome his point.

Lavasa had dissented on aseries of clean chits given by theEC to Prime Minister Modiand BJP president Shah con-cerning their speeches duringthe election campaign.

After Lavasa’s demand torecord his dissent notes in the ECorders was not accepted, he hadrecused himself from cases relat-ing to violations of the MCC.

Responding to a questionon the Opposition’s allegationthat the EC was slow in dealingwith the MCC violation com-plaints related to Modi andShah, prompting the SupremeCourt to step in, Arora said theapex court did give some adverseremarks but there was a “grossmismatch” between the under-standing of the brief by the EC’sadvocate-on-record and the briefgiven by a deputy election com-missioner.

He said when the EC start-ed to decide on the complaints, the top court did not press fur-ther on the issue.

“In all these matters (ofcomplaints of model code vio-lations) you have to get the cer-tified transcripts from the fieldand you have a report from thedistrict election officer andfrom the CEO and then a con-scious decision is taken,” hesaid referring to time taken todeal with the cases.

He said the EC dealt withall the cases despite being busyin carrying out the “gigantic”electoral exercise.

“... And yes, when you arein the election process, you doseveral things. Still a nudgefrom the court, especially theSC, is always helpful,” he said.

“However, we make it clearthat the High Courts whileentertaining such request (pro-tection from arrest) in future, willkeep in mind that this Court byorder dated May 27...Had dis-missed the special leave petitionfiled against the judgment andorder of the Telangana HighCourt in a similar matter, where-in the High Court of Telanganahad taken a view contrary(refused to grant protectionfrom arrest) to what has beenheld by the High Court in thepresent case,” the Bench said.

The Bench listed the batchof petitions before a three-judge Bench to decide thequestion of law on the power ofarrest. The top court had onMay 27 dismissed a plea chal-lenging the Telangana HighCourt verdict which had said

On April 18, the Telanganahigh court had said it was notinclined to grant relief againstarrest to petitioners who hadapproached it challenging thesummons issued bySuperintendent (Anti-Evasion)of the Hyderabad GSTCommissionerate under theCentral Goods and ServicesTax Act, 2017 and invocation ofpenal provisions under the law.

The high court had deliv-ered the verdict which dealtwith a batch of petitions filedby some private companies, itstop officials and others.

The government had toldthe high court that petitionersbefore it were allegedlyinvolved in incorporating sev-eral partnership firms and hadclaimed input tax credit on thebasis of certain invoices, with-out there being any actualphysical receipt of goods.

There will be no roadblockto Vice Admiral Karambir

Singh’s taking of charge as theNavy chief on Friday afterincumbent Admiral SunilLanba retires. The ArmedForces Tribunal (AFT) onWednesday allowed thetakeover and deferred hearingon a petition filed by ViceAdmiral Bimal Verma chal-lenging Singh’s appointment tothe top post superceding him.

The case will now come upfor hearing on July 17 as theGovernment sought more timefor placing records relating toSingh’s appointment before thetribunal as sought by Verma.

He approached the AFT toquestion Singh’s selection asthe next Chief even as Vermais the senior most officer. TheGovernment in Marchannounced Singh’s name forthe top post thereby ignoringthe convention of appointingthe senior most officer as thenext chief. It was the secondtime the previous NDAGovernment gave the senior-ity criteria a go by as BipinRawat was selected as theArmy chief in 2016 overlook-ing senior most officer LtGeneral Praveen Bakshi.

The AFT posted the mat-ter for hearing on July 17 as theGovernment sought more timefor placing records relating toSingh’s appointment beforethe tribunal, Verma’s lawyerAnkur Chhibber said here onWednesday. He said the AFTallowed Singh to take charge asthe new Navy chief on May 31and that his continuation willdepend on the final outcomeof the case.

On May 22, the tribunal haddirected the government to pro-duce before it on May 29 allrecords and documents relatingto selection of the new Navychief. However, the Governmentcould not produce the recordsand sought more time.

Earlier this month, theDefence Ministry issued anorder rejecting Verma’s peti-tion before it. Following thedefence ministry’s order,Verma filed a fresh petition atthe AFT challenging Singh’sappointment as well seekingquashing of the order by the

ministry rejecting his pleaagainst the selection.

In its order, the DefenceMinistry said Verma’s statuto-ry petition dated April 10against the appointment ofSingh to the top post is devoidof merit and has been reject-ed in exercise of powers underSection 23 of the Navy Act1957. On April 25, the tribunaldirected the Defence Ministryto decide Verma’s petitionwithin three weeks.

Rejecting Verma’s plea, theDefence Ministry said a thor-ough selection process wasconducted under which over-all service profile of all the con-tenders for the top post wasexamined. It said specific para-meters for selection wereapplied uniformly to all thecontenders and, based on theassessment, it was found thatVerma, though being thesenior most eligible officer, wasunsuitable to hold the post ofthe chief of the Naval Staff.

In his petition to theDefence Ministry, Verma saidwhy he was overlooked for thetop post despite being thesenior-most in the line ofcommand, terming “wrongful”the Government’s decision toappoint Singh to the post.

Besides Verma, the othercontenders for the Navy chief ’spost included Vice Chief ofNaval Staff Vice Admiral GAshok Kumar, Western NavalCommand chief Vice AdmiralAjit Kumar and Southern NavalCommand chief Vice AdmiralAnil Kumar Chawla. Singh atpresent is the Eastern Commandchief while Verma is heading thetri-Service Andaman andNicobar command.

Page 6: ˚ˇ - The Pioneer€¦ · State profile. However, there has been no official word on ... with Tripathi. Rahul’s no roll- ... ing-in ceremony of the new BJP Government, Jaitley

On May 25, Pakistan launchedits first official moon sightingwebsite pakmoonsighting.pk.This came days after Pakistanreleased its first calculation-

based Hijri calendar for the next five years, prepared by its Ministry of Science andTechnology. Federal Minister FawadChaudhry has plans to launch a mobileapplication for moon sighting soon in linewith several international apps on the sub-ject.

The object of developing a calculation-based lunar calendar was to make thebeginnings and ends of Hijri monthsindependent of visibility of the new moon.Though the moon sighting stays in thenews only thrice every year — the begin-ning of the Ramzan (the 9th and holiestmonth of Islam), end of Ramzan, andbeginning of Dhul Hijjah (the 12th andfinal month in which both Hajj and Eid-ul-Adha take place) — it actually affects thebeginning and end of every Hijri month. An Islamic republic like Pakistan divertsdisproportionate amount of resources to fixthose loose ends.

Pakistan’s meteorological departmenthas 288 observatories, most of them locat-ed in rural and sequestered areas with theadvantage of a clearer sky. These, apartfrom gathering meteorological data, alsocollect data on moonrise and setting. Thedepartment employs theodolite for observ-ing the new moon. A theodolite is a pre-cision instrument fitted with a movabletelescope, which could turn in both verti-cal and horizontal directions. It can recordthe azimuth and altitude of the moon. But,as a study revealed, there was no case wheretheodolite had demonstrated provenadvantage over naked eye.

The data on lunar visibility is passedover to Ruet-e-Hilal Committee(estd.1974), Pakistan’s official though non-statutory body, authorised to determine thebeginning and end of a Islamic monthbased on evidence of moon-sighting. Thecommittee is organised at three levels —national, zonal and district. Every 29th ofa lunar month, the zonal/district commit-tees meet at the camp offices of thePakistan Meteorological Department. Themain meetings happen for key events. Forthe rest of the year, their members join themeetings of zonal/district committees(vide answer to Oral Question No.13,Pakistan National Assembly, January 14,2019). The committee also admits evi-dences from private persons in Pakistan onmoon-sighting. Decisions are taken inaccordance with the Islamic law.

The slender crescent of the new moonvisible to the naked eye days after the con-junction is called Hilal in Arabic. Its visi-bility marks the beginning of a new Hijrimonth. The naked eye viewing (ruya inArabic) nowadays includes optically-aidedviewing, for instance, by telescope. It is not

uncommon to see muftis andmaulanas hunting for themoon on the western horizonimmediately after sunset withtheir trendy telescopes. Butthis often leads to contrarydecisions and split verdicts. The visibility, itself, is subjectto a host of conditions likewidth of the crescent, positionof the moon on its orbit roundthe earth which affects itsapparent size, brightness ofthe background, meteorologi-cal conditions, altitude of thelocation and so on.

The time lag between thesunset and moonset, depend-ing upon the season, variesbetween one to one-and-a-half hours, without the advan-tage of the night sky under anysituation. The crepusculargame of moon-hunting is longover before the night sets in.There is no separate moonrisebecause during conjunction(amavasya) the positions of sunand moon on the celestial lon-gitude coincide. In the days thatfollow, the angular distancebetween the two celestial bod-ies is extremely narrow. Themoon is still lost in the glare ofthe sun. The 29th day of a Hijrimonth coincides with dwitiyatithi when the chances of lunarvisibility are dicey. If the cres-cent is not visible that evening,a Hijri month is extended byone day, whereupon it auto-matically ends. The crescent

not visible on 29th Ramadanmeans that Eid-ul-Fitr isdelayed by another day. Days inHijri calendar are either of 29days or 30 days.

However, moon-sightingin Islamic nations is more of areligious than astronomicalissue. This is evident from theproceedings of several moon-sighting conferences, whichthis author has had the oppor-tunity to pursue. For Pakistan’snew calendar, therefore, topass the muster at the Councilof Islamic Ideology (CII), aconstitutional body was found-ed in 1962, which advises thegovernment on whether a cer-tain law is repugnant to theprinciples of Islam. The CII hasalready begun a consultationprocess but its chairperson DrQibla Ayaz has played his cardsdiplomatically by saying thatthe role of Ruet-e-Hilal, theofficial body on moon-sight-ing, should not be under-mined. With many of the topMuslim clerics in Pakistangone for Umra in Mecca, nodecision is likely to be forth-coming soon.

The observation-basedbeginning of a lunar monthwas originally a Judaic practice.Prior to 70 AD, when ancientIsrael existed, the Jewish grandcouncil called Sanhedrin tooka decision on the beginning ofa new month based on evi-dence from various private

persons. The Misnah Torah, apost-Biblical sacred book of theJews, describes the process ofrigorous examination of thewitnesses who presented them-selves at the Sanhedrin. Thedecision then used to berelayed to Jewish communitiesliving in various parts of theeastern Mediterranean. Butfollowing the destruction ofancient Israel and dispersion ofJews across various lands, theold system of fixing datesbecame unviable. This finallyled to growth of a perpetualJewish lunar calendar based onalgorithm. The tradition has itthat the same was developed byRabbi Hilel, the Jewish patri-arch, in the middle of thefourth century AD. However,Prof Sacha Stern of UniversityCollege (London), a contempo-rary authority on Jewish reli-gious history, affirms that itdates back only to 10th or 11thcentury AD.

A key feature of this per-petual calendar is molad, liter-ally meaning renewal or reju-venation in Hebrew. It impliesthe new moon was mathemat-ically derived, which replacedthe system of observation.

However, the length of thelunation adopted by thefounders of the calendar isfixed, whereas in reality thelength of lunation varies due toeccentricity of moon’s motion. The mean length of synodic

motion of moon is 29 d. 12 h.44 m. 2.87s or 29.53059 daysthough its actual length canvary up to 13 hours on accountof eccentricities and perturba-tions of the orbits of moonaround the earth, and eartharound the sun.

While the Jews made asmarter choice on lunar calen-dar at least one millenniumago, the Islamic world remainscaught in a time warp.Determining new moon byobservation is characteristicof elementary level of astron-omy. It makes the whole calen-dar uncertain. Even when thispractice was formalised inIslam, astronomy in the ancientworld had advanced far enoughto predict tithis and eclipsesbased on calculation. Today, wehave GPS-enabled mobile appslike MoonCalc etc which placesaccurate data on lunar move-ment, position, phases, merid-ian crossing time on our verypalms. There have been sever-al attempts in the Muslimworld to develop a calculation-based calendar, for instance, the Makkah Calendar. Butthese have only polarised theIslamic world. Pakistan’s calen-drical venture needs to bewatched with interest.

Sir - Efficient, honest and sinceregovernment officers are hard tocome by. Able and fearless officersare like a panacea for societal ills.A young Indian Police Service(IPS) officer with a sincerity ofpurpose and dedication to dutycan fascinate youngsters.Kuppuswamy Annamalai, an IPSofficer of the 2011 batch ofKarnataka cadre was known as“Singham” due to his daredevilapproach. As a Superintendent ofPolice in various districts ofKarnataka, Annamalai hadinstilled fear among the evil ele-ments in the society as well asgreedy politicians by his straight-forward, no-nonsense attitude. The 35-year-old Annamalai hasresigned from the IPS leavingthousands of his admirers inshock. In a beautiful and philo-sophical note to his admirers, theofficer has jotted down somenice moments of his short but sen-sational career.

His note amply makes it clearthat he did not enjoy his stint asan IPS officer. The note subtlyobserves he was tied by lack oftime and was compelled to berestrained when occasion

demanded he speak out. Perhapsit is the price one pays for beinga responsible officer in the govern-ment who, despite being highlyeducated, has to be at the beck andcall of politicians, many of whommaybe illiterate and overbear-ing. Many doctors and engineersof high merit keep joining the IASand IPS. Looked at another way,the huge investment on these tal-ented men and women comes to

nought once they join the govern-ment.

Sir - This relates to the editorial“Happy Prince Syndrome.” Afterthe electoral drubbing, RahulGandhi’s decision to quit is a rightstep. However, saner voices want-

ed him to apply the “Kamaraj” for-mula to save the party from thebrink of disaster. It is shocking thecoterie around him only wantedhim to continue in the position toprotect their interests rather thanrejuvenating the party. Whatcomes as an element of surpriseis the Rajasthan and MP statechiefs of the party coming out tosubmit their resignations to thestate legislature along with their

followers which, in short, will onlylead to the downfall of the govern-ment in both the States.

Sir - Whether Rahul Gandhidecides to stay or step down is hispersonal choice. The blame can-not be laid on him for the tsuna-mi of Hindu revivalism thatswept Narendra Modi to power. If the voters did not weigh socialstrife engendered by hardlinezealots, economic failure andincreasing unemployment duringModi’s five-year rule out of Hindunationalist sentiment, there waslittle that Rahul could do aboutthat. Electoral outcomes are notan accurate measure of leadershipqualities. Measuring a leader’sworth merely in terms of his orher party’s performance in anelection excludes a raft of factorsthat influence the electorate. Atthe moment, Rahul works for theCongress.

When Lalu Prasad, then a rustic Yadavchieftain and a well-established cheerleader of the JP movement, was crowned

as Chief Minister of Bihar in 1990, among hisbackers were both Left and Right — communistsand the BJP — who found a common enemy inthe Congress. Thirty years later, Lalu is in prisonon corruption charges while his party is in the dog-house. Lalu, the phenomenon who overturned thetemplate of India’s politics, today faces apathy ofthe very section of the populace that once saw aredeemer in this man who spoke their languageand promised them salvation from centuries ofdiscrimination and disgrace.

Lalu Prasad was always seen as a wily politi-cian — someone who could even count the feath-ers of a flying bird. But the fact remains that hetook no time in frittering away the gains of thecasteist “Mandal” politics. Primarily, because helacked the vision to foresee that by mocking devel-opment, encouraging corruption and lawlessness, and giving Yadavs a carte blanche to do what theypleased to do, he was turning against his own clanand the very forces of social justice that broughthim to power.

Lalu failed to evolve with time and ignoredthe omen that threatened to shatter his image asthe messiah of the entire OBC pantheon and usherin his political doom. Over a period of time, hiscomrades in arms of the social justice movement— Nitish Kumar, Ramvilas Paswan and others —deserted his caravan, reducing it to an assemblyof Yadavs and Muslims alone. The way extreme-ly backward castes led by Nitish Kumar and Dalits, under the stewardship of Ram Vilas Paswan, cametogether to challenge the Muslim-Yadav combineby joining hands with even the upper castes in theLok Sabha polls has a clear message. Unless LaluPrasad’s outfit goes through a complete metamor-phosis, it will never again regain the crown ofBihar.

It was this lack of political foresight that sawLalu forcing Nitish Kumar to walk out of thealliance government in 2016. It was this lack ofpolitical foresight that stopped him from walkingthe extra mile to protect the RJD-JD(U) alliancein Bihar. The break-up of the promising politi-cal collaboration and the return of Nitish Kumarto the saffron fold made for a watershed event innational politics that sowed the seeds of disinte-gration among the anti-BJP forces. Critics will saythat Nitish acted out of “opportunism” but it wasLalu who wrote the script for his exit. Lalu andhis son Tejashvi kept humiliating Nitish from apublic platform, leaving no opportunity to remindhim that he was a Chief Minister at their mercy. He also didn’t give a free hand to Nitish in tak-ing administrative and policy decisions andwanted the latter to be at his beck and call in thematter of transfer and posting.

When the CBI, apparently at the behest of theBJP, began to tighten the screw against Lalu andhis family in a railway hotel scam, the RJD chiefdid the final miscalculation. Instead of asking hisson to resign from the Cabinet to save the alliancegovernment, he tried to bear and grin it. An image-conscious person like Nitish Kumar realised thatif he continued with Lalu, the JD(U) would endup paying the cost of policy paralysis of his gov-ernance. Lalu did not realise that his interest lay

in making every possible compromiseto stop Nitish from going to the BJP. Themiscalculation not only gave the BJP achance to share power in Bihar throughthe backdoor but also broke the back-bone of Opposition unity at the nation-al level. Nitish, a Kurmi leader, had theimage and social background to chal-lenge Modi at the national level. He wasthe lone leader who could have been arallying point for consolidation ofextremely backward castes behind theOpposition. The breakdown of the RJD-JD(U) alliance was a turning point innational politics and precursor to thereturn of the Modi regime at the Centre.

Lalu’s supporters may argue thatNitish had made up his mind — forsome reason or the other — to joinhands with the BJP and Lalu could havedone little to prevent the parting of ways. However, few care to ponder that itwould not have been so easy for Nitisheither to go back to the BJP after the sortof bitterness that existed between himand Narendra Modi. He must have feltso suffocated that he decided to swallowhis pride and accept the leadership of hisbitter rival, who had even questioned hisDNA. It was at this moment when Lalushould have acted like a statesman andmade any number of sacrifices to ensurethat the Opposition remained unitedagainst the Modi government.

In parting ways with Nitish Kumar,Lalu thought he could challenge the BJP-JD(U) alliance by bringing together sev-eral non-Yadav OBC outfits under anoverarching umbrella of social justice. But he didn’t realise that thoughcasteism was rooted deeply in the soil ofBihar politics, the State had also tastedthe flavour of development under NitishKumar’s decade-old rule. The elaboratenetwork of roads, 24-hour electricity

supply and the end of the kidnapping forransom trade had brought much reliefto the people. The State’s revenue col-lection and development expendituretook a huge leap in 10 years. And thevoter was not ready to turn the clockback. So when Lalu (let’s assume that itwas he who was dictating the course ofRJD politics from behind the prisonwalls) tried to expand his M-Y allianceby roping in other backward castes likeKushwahas and Mallahs and joininghands with Upendra Kushwaha andMukesh Sahni, the experiment had fewtakers.

A section of Yadavs may have emo-tional reasons to support Lalu Prasad inhis moment of crisis, and Muslims mayhave their own compulsion to remainhyphenated with him, but the rest ofBihar found no reason to leave itsfuture in the hands of someone likeTejashvi Yadav, who had spent most ofhis time in ridiculing and humiliatingNitish Kumar.

Perhaps, Lalu got swayed by the suc-cessful experiment of the 2015 Assemblypolls when the OBC and Dalits were upin the arms against the BJP over RSSchief Mohan Bhagwat’s controversialstatement against caste-based reserva-tion. But Lalu forgot that the presenceof Nitish Kumar by his side played a bigrole in mobilising the entire groupingsof OBCs and most backward castes. Thevoters were assured that if Nitishremained at the helm of affairs, Biharwould not go back to the days of the jun-gle raj.

Lalu tried to raise the same castepassion in the Lok Sabha polls when heopposed the Modi government’s decisionto grant 10 per cent reservation in gov-ernment jobs and educational institu-tions to candidates of the general cate-

gory. Lalu ignored the advice of hissenior party colleagues like RaghuvanshPrasad Singh, who openly criticised hisdecision. While Lalu’s decision complete-ly antagonised the upper castes, NitishKumar’s hold over the EBCs is so firmthat the former’s gambit failed miserably.

The outcome of the polls showedthat Prime Minister Narendra Modi’sastutely cultivated EBC lineage andNitish Kumar’s sway over the non-YadavOBC went a long way in blunting theedge of Lalu’s rusted caste device. Lalufailed to realise that times were chang-ing and the hackneyed slogans of socialjustice didn’t mean much to a new gen-eration of voters oblivious to theobnoxious caste discrimination of thepast. The days ahead could be nightmar-ish for both Lalu and his party. His healthis sinking and there is no hope of hisrelease from jail any sooner. Both hissons are on the warpath and voicesagainst Tejashvi’s leadership have begunto rise in the party. Going by the LokSabha trends, the RJD will face an exis-tential crisis after next year’s Assemblypolls.

Lalu may have given a voice to mil-lions of socially deprived people but hefailed to hear their yearning for change. With empowerment comes aspiration, which is a major catalyst for a politicalshake-up of the type that has turned apolitical giant into a fallen messiah.

Lalu once jokingly said, “Jab taksamosa me rahega aloo, tab tak Bihar merahega Lalu.” The master of metaphorsand similes that he is, it was his way ofsaying that, whether a winner or a van-quished, he would forever be remem-bered for his contribution in empower-ing the poor and hapless multitudes.

Even before the Bharatiya JanataParty’s (BJP’s) landslide victoryin the recently-concluded elec-

tions, there was a healthy disrespect forfamily dynasts in the Congress amongthe young BJP-leaning ideologue. Ifyou mentioned the irony of the factthat several of the BJP’s own cadre ofyouth leaders are second or third gen-eration politicians, they would arguethat they had worked in their con-stituencies and elsewhere. Some likePoonam Mahajan, the BJP’s youthwing leader and daughter of PramodMahajan, travelled across the countryconstantly to ensure that the BJP gotthe youth vote. While all dynasts areborn into politics, Congress dynasts, they always argued, enjoyed the trap-

pings of power without wanting to dothe work for it. All except one, a manwhom most young and old leadersinside the party always respected —Sachin Pilot.

And after the Congress won theAssembly polls in Rajasthan andmade the much older Ashok Gehlotas Chief Minister, many found it sur-prising, although several people in theBJP were jubilant albeit a bit sad forPilot. This one decision, they said, completely exposed the Congress’claims to represent the youth and notonly would this decision cost them thepopular vote in Rajasthan, whereNarendra Modi remained hugelypopular even as the Congress won theAssembly polls, it would expose RahulGandhi’s claims to “love” the youth ashollow. This was not just the opinionof those inside the BJP. Several com-mentators in the Congress ecosystemwere not just puzzled at the decision, some were outright apoplectic. Andeven though some might claim thatthis decision was made by SoniaGandhi or because of some outstand-ing land cases against Robert Vadra in

Rajasthan, it was an illogical decision. As several of the old guard in the

Congress study their defeat at the hus-tings, they will likely learn that this onefact was weaponised by the BJPagainst them and no matter how manycool campaign numbers that theCongress commissioned and RahulGandhi’s appeals to the youth, thetreatment of a genuine young andhard-working politician was going tocount against the leadership. However,Pilot is not the first young leader to besidelined after working hard. The lastone was Jagan Reddy, again the son of

a successful Congress politician andone loyal to the family in YSRajashekhar Reddy. One who mighthave even returned to the party foldhad Rahul Gandhi the grace and senseto have apologised to him for hismother’s indiscretions and told him tolet bygones be bygones. Instead RahulGandhi entertained the Telugu DesamParty’s N Chandrababu Naidu eventhough most opinion polls were indi-cating that Jagan Reddy was ahead inthe race. We all saw what happened, because at the end of the day, sheerelectoral numbers do not lie. Jaganwiped the Telugu Desam Party almostclean off the floor of the AndhraPradesh Legislative Assembly andtotally out of the Lok Sabha. And whileit is not correct to blame RahulGandhi for ditching Jagan — that iscompletely on Sonia Gandhi — hecould have salvaged the situation.Again, another tickmark for theCongress party’s amazing ineptitudewith regard to youth. The young lead-ers which the Congress did not up thistime were people like Gehlot’s son wholost and Kamal Nath and P

Chidambaram’s sons, who won theirseats but at what cost? Ignoring Pilotand Jagan Reddy might have cost themthe ability to cross at least a hundredseats and blunt Modi’s massive edgeamong young first and second-timevoters.

You get a sense of Modi’s immensepopularity among younger votersclearly through the results in UttarPradesh and Bihar, where there is nodoubt that young voters have voted forhim in droves. One could argue thatModi is no spring chicken either buthe has a message that resonates withthe younger population, a message thatgoes beyond caste and infuses a senseof national self-identity. In both thoseStates, younger voters did not just ditchthe Congress, they also ditched twoyoung leaders of caste-based parties inAkhilesh Yadav and Tejashwi Yadav. And if Modi and Amit Shah are to beremembered for anything in three orfour decades, it will be for finallysmashing through post-MandalCommission caste-based identity pol-itics. While many cannot swallow thatdefeat, the meltdown not just appear-

ing on social media but in distastefularticles by full-time antagonists of theIndian State, this election must not justbe remembered as one that the BJPwon through complicated social engi-neering and excellent delivery of sub-sidies, but one that the Congress con-spired to lose.

All is not lost for the Congress. Ifthey have to take a youth pivot, theyhave to do it now. They have to notonly cleanse the party of the old guardwhose clothes are still stained by theextreme corruption of the UPA-2 erabut also promote hard-working youngleaders instead of promoting thosestuck in the ivory towers of Delhi andMumbai. In this, they should not onlytake a page out of the BJP’s book andsee how effectively Poonam Mahajanand her team have mobilised theBharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha whilethe Indian Youth Congress is in acoma, but also look at one of their ownin Sachin Pilot and the one they lostin Jagan Reddy. Otherwise theCongress will, like many in the oldguard, wither away and die.

“It was known from theword go that Karti was fieldedas a candidate only because ofthe pressure exerted byChidambaram over RahulGandhi. he can lead Congress to victo-ry,” the actor had told themedia on Tuesday.

The Congress leaderblamed Chidambaram andparty’s state chief K S Azhagirifor their role in getting Karti aseat from Tamil Nadu. “Thereare many senior Congress lead-ers like Sudarshan Nachiappanwith proven track record. ButChidambaram wanted his sonto be in a privileged positionbecause the latter is an accusedin serious cases of financialimpropriety and corruption.Chidambaram himself ispower hungry and selfish. Weare happy that the CongressHigh Command has under-stood his intentions,” said thesemior Congress leader fromTamil Nadu. He pointed outthat Azhagiri was appointed asparty chef ignoring the claimsof many senior leaders at theinstance of Chidambaram.“Azhagiri is Chidambaram’ssidekick,” he said.

Meanwhile, there has beendemands from friendly partiesof the Congress in Kerala thatRahul Gandhi should notresign. Struggling to come to termswith the third successive

poll debacle in the last fiveyears and counter growing dis-sent among the cadre,Samajwadi Party has come upwith the usual recipe of majorrevamp of the organisationwith focus on roping in themost backward castes (MBCs).

The non-Yadav MBCsoverwhelmingly voted for theBharatiya Janata Party in therecent Lok Sabha elections.

Samajwadi Party chiefAkhilesh Yadav has held aseries of meetings over thepast two days in the presenceof party patron Mulayam SinghYadav. Mulayam is said to havetold Akhilesh to make theparty more broad-basedinstead of focusing only onbackward castes.

Samajwadi Lohia Vahinisecretary Shravan Kumar Tyagihad posted an open letter toAkhilesh on the social media, asking him to get rid of syco-phants and sideline those whomisbehave with party workers.

“The party office is filledwith leaders who can not evenget 10 votes on their own,” theLohia Vahini leader wrote.

Meanwhile, two of thenewly-elected SP MPs havealso blamed the alliance withthe Bahujan Samaj Part for theparty’s poor show. The MPssaid that the alliance was for-malised too late and the mes-sage did not reach the people.

“I think SP and BSP votescould not come together.People also got less time todecipher our message.Gathbandhan mein thodi derhui (the alliance got a bitdelayed),” said SP MP-electfrom Moradabad, ST Hasan.

Meanwhile, SP MP-electfrom Sambhal, Shafiqur

Rehman Barq, said that itwould have been beneficial ifthe Congress was also part ofthe alliance.

“Gathbandhan aur maz-boot ho jata, natije behtar aate(the alliance would have beenstrengthened and the resultwould have been better),” hecommented, adding that SPand BSP workers worked atcross-purposes.

SP sources said thatAkhilesh Yadav met a cross-sec-tion of leaders during the pasttwo days, including those whohad been sidelined in recentmonths. They include AhmadHasan, Om Prakash Singh,Arvind Singh Gope, AvadheshPrasad, Manoj Paras etc.

Akhilesh Yadav also dis-banded the frontal units of theSP like Lohia Vahini,Samajwadi Yuvjan Sabha,Mulayam Singh Youth Brigadeand Samajwadi Chhatra Sabha. These outfits would be recon-stituted with new leaders.

The SP chief had earlierdissolved his panel of 50 mediapanellists and the party wasalso preparing to name a newstate party president, replacingNaresh Uttam.

Despite its alliance with theBSP, the SP fared poorly in theLok Sabha elections and couldbag only five seats. Three mem-bers of the Yadav family —Dimple Yadav, DharmendraYadav and Akshay Yadav —lost the elections.

Post the rout of the SP-BSP-RLD alliance in UP, aserious effort is on to analysehow the formidable caste arith-metic went awry.

BSP chief Mayawati and SPleader Akhilesh Yadav, whosummoned their party leadersfor a dressing down, are said tobe open to wholesale organi-sational changes to addressthe shortcomings.

As the Lok Sabha electiondebacle pushed the ruling

coalition in Karnataka into agreater turmoil, the CongressWednesday went into an over-drive to avert a potential exis-tential crisis to the one-year-oldH D Kumaraswamy ministry.

Rushed here by the partyhigh command on a damagecontrol mission, Congress gen-eral secretary K C Venugopalmet Kumaraswamy, seniorparty leaders and ministersand attended a legislature partymeeting to save the coalitionfrom an intensified BJPonslaught.

CLP leader and Congress-JDS coordination committeechief Siddaramaiah said noone would leave the Congressand there was no disgruntle-ment either.

“All of us are together.Thisgovernment is strong and willsurvive. If BJP tries to desta-bilise the government, theywill be biggest fools,” he toldreporters after the CLP meet-ing, attended by 72 CongressMLAs, with two rebels RameshJarkiholi and R Roshan Baiggiving it a miss.

Two other missing law-makers-- Ramalinga Reddyand Byrati Basavaraj-- hadobtained permission not toattend the meet, he said.

Ramesh Jarkiholi has beenhobnobbing with the BJP lead-ers indicating that he mayjump the ship, while Baig hasbeen ridiculing the party lead-ership and praising prime min-ister Narendra Modi, leavingthe Congress red-faced.

KPCC president DineshGundu Rao said senior leadersand ministers would meetThursday to discuss cabinetexpansion, a solution that hasbeen proposed to quell snow-balling dissent.

A joint legislature partymeeting of the Congress andJDS would be held soon, headded.

The state congress unitrevoked the suspension ofMLA Kampli Ganesh, whohad faced the action after analleged brawl with a party col-league at a resort in January, party sources said.

Coalition worries havemultiplied after BJP's spectac-ular win with 25 of the 28 LokSabha seats in its pocket, leav-ing a mere one seat each toCongress and JDS, which, despite a joint fight, were sweptaway by the Modi wave.

Buoyed by the landslidewin in the LS polls, the BJP,

which emerged as the single-largest party in the 224-memberassembly in the May polls lastyear, is reportedly eyeing tocapture power amid reports ofa rift between Congress and JDS.

The BJP had won 104 seatsand added one more to its tallyin the bypolls held along withLok Sabha elections.

The Congress had won theKundgol bypoll.

In the 224 member assem-bly, the ruling combine has astrength of 115 (Cong-78, JDS-37) excluding the Speaker. BSPwith one member and an inde-pendent are currently sup-porting the ruling alliance.KPJP has one member.

In the meetings earlier, plans for cabinet expansion orreshuffle were discussed byVenugopal withKumaraswamy, Siddaramaiah,Deputy Chief Minister GParameshwara and Rao,Congress sources said.

An expansion or reshufflingof cabinet would not help

JDS-Congress coalition gov-ernment, which is facing aturmoil after the Lok Sabhaelection debacle, seniorCongress leader VeerappaMoily said.

He suggested that the cab-inet reshuffle or expansionshould happen only after ascer-taining reasons for the failureof JDS and Congress alliance inLok Sabha polls.

“I think, going for expan-sion or reshuffle immediately isnot going to help. It may fur-ther disrupt coalition govern-ment's prospects,” Moily, a for-mer state chief minister, toldPTI.

His comments come amidreports that a cabinet expan-sion or reshuffle was on thecards in a bid to save the coali-tion government with CongressGeneral Secretary K CVenugopal, deputed by thehigh command, holding meet-ings with senior leaders andministers and attending a leg-islature party meeting.

Buoyed by the landslidewin in the LS polls, the BJP,which emerged as the single-largest party in the 224-mem-ber assembly in the May pollslast year, is reportedly eyeing tocapture power amid reports ofa rift between Congress andJDS.

Moily, who himself tasteddefeat in Chikkaballapur LokSabha seat, said there was noquestion of Congress with-drawing support to JDS.

Bengaluru: The BJP wouldwait for the Congress-JDS gov-ernment in Karnataka to col-lapse on its own due to itsinfighting, state party chief B SYeddyurappa said Wednesday.

Hitting out at the rulingalliance for creating an “atmos-phere of confusion”, the formerChief Minister asked them toperform or “resign and gohome”.

“We don't have any feelingthat we have to go for elections. It is certain that they (Congressand JDS) will go home fightingeach other. We will wait. We are105 (MLAs), we are ready towait,” Yeddyurappa said.

Speaking to reporters here,he said “Our legislators also feelthat the government will fallbecause of their infighting andlet's wait. There is no need totalk about dissolving theassembly or anything else.”

“Let them (Congress-JDS)work efficiently or resign andgo home. Instead of that by cre-ating an atmosphere of confu-sion and loot they are indulgingin, they cannot be forgiven,” headded.

Boasting about the BJP'sperformance in the state in theLok Sabha polls, Yeddyurappahad said on Tuesday it wouldbe “better” if the rulingCongress-JD(S) coalition inthe state dissolves the assemblyand goes for fresh polls.

With the Congress-JD(S)alliance suffering a rout in theLok Sabha polls, managing towin one seat each, and growingdisgruntlement within the par-ties blaming the partnership fortheir “worst-ever” perfor-mance, coalition leaders fearthat BJP may poach its MLAs.

The US on Tuesday removedIndia from its currency

monitoring list of major trad-ing partners, citing steps beingtaken by New Delhi whichaddressed some of the Trumpadministration’s major con-cerns.

For the first time, the USplaced India in its currencymonitoring list of countries inMay 2018 with potentiallyquestionable foreign exchangepolicies.

Switzerland is the othernation that has been removedby the US on Tuesday from itscurrency monitoring list whichamong others include China,Japan, South Korea, Germany,Italy, Ireland, Singapore,Malaysia and Vietnam.

“India has been removedfrom the monitoring list in thisreport, having met only one outof three criteria — a significantbilateral surplus with theUnited States — for two con-secutive reports,” the TreasuryDepartment said in its latestsemi-annual report on macro-economic and foreign exchangepolicies of major trading part-ners of the US sent to theCongress.

After purchasing foreign

In both Switzerland andIndia, there was a notabledecline in 2018 in the scale andfrequency of foreign exchangepurchases, the report said.

“Neither Switzerland norIndia met the criteria for hav-ing engaged in persistent,one-sided intervention ineither the October 2018report or this report. BothSwitzerland and India havebeen removed from the mon-itoring list,” the Treasury saidin its report running intoover 40 pages.

A country can intentional-

Some parents might believe it's ina child's nature to lie and it's theparent's job to punish dishonestyto prevent it from taking over.Actually parents often set their

kids up to lie. Here's the mistake they make. They

confront their kids accusingly withanger or threats. But if you're harsh andpunitive, they're afraid to tell you thetruth. If you make it safe for them, theywill be honest. So be firm on honesty andgentle on your kids.

If your kid is skewing the truth insideout, there are effective ways to whittleaway his little white lies. There's nothingworse than calling someone a liar; thedamage of that word can sear his littlesoul and tear up his confidence like con-fetti.

Kids are nosy and listen in on con-versations even when you think they'renot. Create a truthful home environmentby being truthful. Do what you say anddo not litter your life with white lies. When you distort the truth, kids see thatas an opportunity to do the same. Theyview it as a green light to be deceptive.Kids want to mimic mom and dad andthey will think if you lie, they can do ittoo. You don't want them to think thatway. Don't rationalize why you lie. Anddefinitely don't co-sign your kid’s lies. Ifyour child didn’t finish her homeworkfor whatever reason, don't let her con-vince you to write a letter to the teachersaying the computer broke. These actionssanction lying and teach the child howeasy it is to avoid the consequences ofpoor choices.

Talk about how some things youhear about are not actually true, butmake-believe. Deciphering truth fromfantasy can be tricky, especially things wesee on TV. Make up a fantastic story withyour child about things that could notbe true – such as flying, living in theclouds, or meeting animals that talk.Explain that these stories are fun, butthey are not reality (what is true in thereal world). Some things we see such as

shows with cartoon characters, or hearabout like fairies or monsters, are notactually true but “made-up” stories.Discuss when it is okay to pretend andexplain that sometimes it is important forus to tell the truth – to say what is actu-ally real.

Let's say you've discovered that yournine-year-old child shoplifted somecandy at the grocery store.

Talk to your child about broader top-ics and how being truthful can have apositive impact. Let him see the worldfrom a truthful view and not a placewhere you can lie, be deceitful and getresults. Explain to them that honesty goesa long way.

Wouldn't we all feel safer about sit-uations if we knew we wouldn't be pros-ecuted if we just came clean? Well thesame situation applies to your child.Children don't want to be truthful if theyknow a spanking, or a chair in the cor-ner, awaits them. Try offering amnesty.Let your child know, no matter what, ifthey tell the truth they will not be pun-ished. This method will definitely curbyour child's affection for untruthfulness.

Talk with your children-beginningvery early- about how much you valuehonesty in your family. Tell them howimportant it is to all of you that you canalways count on each other to tell thetruth-even when it's difficult. If there'snot honesty between parents and chil-dren, there won't be trust or closeness inyour family either.

A simple but extremely importantrule of thumb in child rearing is, "Don'tlie to your child." For example, tellingyour kids that the family pet has gone toa farm upstate when the animal is actu-ally dead is a good example of this com-mon mistake that parents make. Whenwe bend the truth in these ways, it's not,of course, malicious: we are trying to saveour kids' feelings. We may be unsure ofhow to handle these difficult situations,or just hoping to avoid the issue, butmaking things up or lying to protect yourchild from pain actually backfires

because it distorts reality, which isunnecessary and potentially damaging.

Model honesty for your children-notonly in your words but also in yourlifestyle. You can't expect them to tell youthe truth if you're not honest withthem-even when they ask you an awk-ward question. Be brief and be age appro-priate in your response, but if you lie tothem when it's embarrassing to tell thetruth, you can't expect them to blurt outthe truth when it's tough for them.Obviously, both parents and childrenhave a right to a private life and you needto draw careful boundaries when shar-ing intimate details that are over theirheads or too personal, issues of the past

you are still struggling with or things thatwill just plain freak them out. But yourgoal should be to create an open envi-ronment where there are no secrets andeveryone feels comfortable being truth-ful.

Let them know that you put moreemphasis on their honesty than on thepunishment for their dishonest behav-ior. Yes, you can impose consequencesfor their lie, but they need to know there'sa benefit for them in being honest. If youglide right over their courage in pour-ing out the truth and jump to a punish-ment, they won't be quick to fess up thenext time. My daughter told me once thatshe could tell me the truth because she

didn't fearme. She trusted that I'd becompassionate and not sneer at her, harshly criticize her or be unfair. If it'sstill necessary to discipline after they'vebravely spilled the beans, do it withrespect, be tender with them and letthem know how much you appreciatetheir honesty.

Everyone has the ability to be hon-est, but if you don't practice it, both youand your kids may develop the habit ofcutting corners, fudging and tellingwhite lies-because it's easier. As a parentyou have the opportunity to help yourkids develop the characteristic of beinghonest, but it has to be nurtured. Don'tlower your standards, but do understand.

Designers are playing with theidea of nautical decor in newways, with furnishings and

style notes that say “classiccontemporary” instead of “kitschycute.”

There might be life preserverson the wall but they’re probablyvintage and paired with modernchairs. There might be art butinstead of the usual beachytableaux, there are close-up waveprints or oversize photos of seacreatures.

It’s a look that still pays homageto a home’s waterside location —actual or aspirational — but in astylish way.

New York designer GhislaineVinas recently did a project out inthe sandy seaside enclave ofMontauk, New York. A freshpalette of white and blue wasaccented with Vinas’ signaturepunches of bright orange, greenand yellow. Beach-chair-stylestripes of colour adorn furniturepieces and shower tile. Porthole-style mirrors in various iterationsanchor bathroom vanities. Andscattered throughout the home arenautical references given a playfulspin. For example, in the open planliving area, Vinas hung a group ofwhite sphere light fixturessuspended in blue netting; theylook like boat buoys.

Blues ranging in intensity fromsky to pool to navy were used intextiles and rugs throughout thehouse. And there’s loads of livelyart, from photoprints of giantwaves to San Francisco artist RexRay’s groovy surfboard wallpaper,as well as a group of whimsical,

painted shark heads fromCalifornia ceramicist Lorien Stern.

“For this Montauk project, theclient’s roots are strong in Floridaand she has fond memories of timespent on the beach in the 1970s,”Vinas says. “So we adopted a supertongue-in-cheek aesthetic andmixed it in with a classic but coolHamptons beach vibe.” Thatmashup led her team to dub thehome “Floritauk”, a name the clientliked so much that it stuck.

Vinas also introduced tastycitrus hues like lime, orange andlemon to the decor. “We loved thishomage to Floridian agricultureand decoupaged a vintage dresserwith fruit cut-outs,” she says.

While Vinas went for a playfulseaside vibe, Minneapolis-baseddesigner Raena Albers opted forsomething a little more serene inone of her recent projects. “Myclients moved to Minnesota fromthe Pacific Northwest and have ahuge affinity for sailing,” she says.

Albers referenced that coast’smoody palette of sand, mist andocean in the furniture andaccessories. A smart little model

sailboat graces a mantel, while agallery wall of white-framed,watercolour seabird prints addsinterest in a family seating area.

Wal-mart and Wayfair haveseveral well-priced options if you’relooking for a rope-trimmed tablelamp; some have the rope wrappinga base, while on others the ropeitself is the lamp base.

At Ballard Designs, there’s amirror framed in faux white coralthat would make a statement; it’savailable in wall-mountable andfloor sizes. Suzanne Kasler’s bold, graphic nautical flags come framedin natural wood.

Salvaged wood from Thaifishing boats is used to makeinteresting lamp bases in severalsizes at Continental Home. Thereare floor and table lamps made ofgathered driftwood here, as well.

Cle Tile carries British artistBoris Aldridge’s Ocean, Tide Pooland Water tiles, part of hishandmade porcelain and poured-glass collection in an array of deep, liquid blues. Water sparkling on thebay inspired San Franciscodesigner Erica Tanov’s Shimmercollection for Cle. Each tile iscrafted in Northern California ofsolid brass and when arranged on awall they do resemble sunlit water— or mermaid’s scales.

If you like the idea of a siren’ssong on the wall but don’t want togo with tile, consider designerGenevieve Gorder’s Pearl Bellyrepositionable and removablewallpaper at Tempaper. A dreamy, iridescent finish brings bothmermaids and shells to mind.

Fashion all over the world isshifting towards dressing forcomfort and a major offshoot

of this is the trend of athleisure. This buzzword is synonymouswith a trendy and more comfort-able transformation of sportswearto evolve into people’s workoutroutines. It is, of course, a naturalcorollary of health and fitnessconsciousness among peoplewhere gym fashion is now an inte-gral part of their lives. And no,don’t mistake it for just trackpants or loose-fit T-shirts whichpeople might randomly pick up fortheir workout schedules. Evengym clothes require a style and canmake a fashion statement today.Millennials might have less offormals for workplace but moreyoga pants, t-shirts and sweatpantsfor workouts.

While the data indicates thatthere was not much space in theIndian wardrobes for athleisure afew years ago, the trend finallycame under the limelight after2015, when designer AnamikaKhanna blended sporty and eth-nic in her debut prêt 2016 collec-tion. Designer Kanika Goyal fol-lowed suit and teamed track pantswith a crisp shirt.

Gradually, athleisure started togain momentum and moved frombeing just a fad to a sartorial rev-olution that has been embracedboth on and off the runway.

Sports and fitness brandsquickly tapped into the trend andincorporated fashion in their

designs. As per the statistics fromYWC fashion had revealed, theoverall athleisure category hasbeen growing at a rate of 20 to 25per cent annually where the seg-ment for women and childrenaccount for 12 to 16 per cent andmenswear has seen a rise fromeight to 10 per cent. Websites tooare upping their stakes in ath-leisure. In 2016, Myntra, the onlinefashion store, had acquired a 51 percent stake in HRX, a fitness brandby Hrithik Roshan.

Keeping this paradigm shift inlifestyles and mindsets, brandshave been investing in innovationand technology not only infootwear but also in gym apparel.

! "!# $#%%#A big push to the segment has

come from celebrities who havenot only embraced athleisure stylebut have also been launching theirown lines. Afsar Zaidi, CEO andco-founder of HRX, had pointedout that with more celebrities andfitness enthusiasts donning ath-leisure even for casual outings, youngsters have started looking atit as an inspiration and a trend toflaunt. It has become more of com-fort clothing than just the idealattire for gym sessions.

A spokesperson from Adidas, said, “Gym clothing, popularlyknown as athleisure, is the perfectamalgamation of functionality andfashion and is something that themillennials don’t mind sportingoutside the gym. Globally, the

trend has also been heavily influ-enced by celebrities who are seensporting a gym-to-street style intheir everyday lives. It is acceptableoutside of the gym because it fallsin the sweet spot where comfortmeets fashion.”

Sunil Gupta, brand director ofReebok India, said that they havewitnessed the Indian youth takingto fitness like never before. However, the lines between tradi-tional gym wear and fashionapparel are blurring, contributingto a significant growth in the ath-leisure segment. The brand hasbeen at the forefront of productinnovation that brings togethertechnology and design in a waythat it appeals to the millennials.

many ways to be motivated forworkout is the excitement to wearstylish clothes for the routine.Experts believe that fashion canaffect fitness, making one feelmore confident and lively to per-form the workout session, since the

The Adidas spokespersonadded, “With a larger section of thepopulation, especially the millen-nials, making their fashion choic-es with more awareness and at thesame time making fitness their pri-ority, it is only natural that theadoption of athleisure clothing willrise among the people.”

In a bid to show that sports-wear needn’t always be masculine, designers have introduced manyfusion elements, florals and lace tosports bras to give them a trendi-er look. While loose t-shirts with coloured straps, whichare visible on the neckline, is tak-ing over people’s choices.

Athleisure as a trend is here tostay. What we are likely to see infuture is a more varied and a fur-ther refined version of it, so muchso that it gets mainstreamed.

The Hindi film industry isstill running behind theusual “formula” based

content leading to a new trendof flops, says actor Abhay Deol, who believes the web space isa “Godsent opportunity” foreveryone to push the envelopefor diversity and originality inthe entertainment world.

Asked if content on digitalplatforms can overshadow cin-ema and theatre culture, Abhaysaid, “If you see what happenedin Hollywood, their dramabecame so good on TV thatnow you only see superherofilms releasing (in theatres) ascinema has become all about aspectacle. People want to seesomething grand and largescale and superhero films arehard to beat in that sense. Butif you want to watch gooddrama, then you watch it onHBO or Netflix. Whereas inIndia, what’s interesting that Iam finding is that I guessbecause films have never actu-ally gone beyond the formula...Now, what is happening isthat our drama will improve,no doubt... like Delhi Crime isa huge achievement for Indianshows but I also think there areexpectations for Bollywood tomatch up.”

“Now, when you see theBollywood films, the trend isfor them to flop, really,” addedthe actor.

Abhay, who opened thefloodgates for quirky alterna-tive cinema in Bollywood withfilms like DevD, Oye Lucky!Lucky Oye!, Manorama SixFeet Under and Road, Movie, said the audience is done with“larger in life stories” in Hindifilms.

“It’s because people arewatching actors performingroles that are heroic but youbelieve them as they look likeyou, act like you and act real. Now, suddenly they are spoiledas they are like, ‘Okay, I wantto watch that in films now,’ Thelarger-than-life candyfloss is fartoo diabetic for me. That’swhat I think is happening,”

added the actor, who has ven-tured into the web space withNetflix’s film Chopsticks.

What is different aboutthe digital space?

“They come from a spaceof encouraging artistes to beoriginal. They have thrown indiversity into... when therewas very little of it. They havealready done that. It’s a formu-la for them just as much as theformula for a lot of producersand studios in our country’sBollywood.”

Abhay asserted that thedigital platform’s formula is“about diversity, being provoca-tive, original and so for anyartiste that matter it’s an oppor-tunity and Godsent”.

“It saves a lot of people andwill also throw in diversity in

our own industry. Somethingthat we desperately need or elsewe will continue making thethree films we have been mak-ing for the past 70 years.”

In Sachin Yardi-directedChopsticks, Abhay will be seenplaying a con man alongsideactress Mithila Palkar. Theyhave a third co-star: A goat.

This is not the first timeAbhay will be seen playing acon man. It is a role he mem-orably played in Oye Lucky!Lucky Oye!.

“This (Chopsticks) char-acter is far more suave andurban from that of Oye Lucky...And for him, stealing is some-thing he does with passion. It’ssomething he’s good at...” hesaid.

In our vedic literature, there isa legend that Kashyap Rishi

was deeply engrossed in thestudy of the Vedas. During hislifetime of three hundred years,he met with death twice after aninterval of hundred years each. But, at that juncture, he used topray to God to extend his lifefor another hundred years tostudy the Vedas further since hewas not yet satisfied from hislearning. However, after study-ing the Vedas up to three hun-dred years of age, he prayed toGod to leave his corporal, destructive body, saying—“Ananta VaiVedaha” i.e. knowl-edge of Vedas is unlimited.(Note: As per Yajurved mantra3/62, saints or followers of theVedas could extend their livesup to four hundred years only.)

In Vedas, God haspreached all matters from thetiniest straw to the AlmightyGod. Therefore, the subject ofpolitics has also not been leftuntouched. God is the Lord ofuniverse and to command it,He has showered knowledge offour Vedas as constitution of theuniverse. In this connection, Iwould like to draw the readers'attention on the following evi-dences. As per Yajurved mantra9/32, the King (all politicians)must be learned of Vedas, dis-charge his moral duties tonurse and protect the publicand animals properly. TheYajurved mantras 11/14 and10/29 preach that the Kingalong with his ministers, mustbe impartial, religious-minded

and protector of public. Vedicliterature like the ValmikiRamayana, Mahabharata andso on, state that the King andhis politicians, along with thepublic, right from the beginningof the earth up till theMahabharata period, followedthe Vedic path and thereforemaintained several pious qual-ities like peace, divine pleasure, justice, brotherhood, respecttowards women, control oversenses and perceptions.

To establish this further, some instances are highlighted. When Bali was hurt by anarrow of Lord Ram, he wasapproached by Lord Ram andLaxman before he was about todie. Bali asked the Lord that ifhe (Lord Ram) was mercifuland pious then why he wouldkill the innocent such as him.To this, the learned of theVedas, Lord Ram replied that heis designated as a King byvirtue of being the elder broth-er of King Bharat. Bali ignoredtraditional humanity to enjoyhis younger brother's wife as hisown despite knowing that herhusband was still alive. In thisway, he had finished the tradi-tional morality, duly indulgedin heinous crime, and hadbecome a slave of sensuality, thus ignoring the eternal, tra-ditional and moral duties of aKing, entrusted by God inVedas. Vedas in this matter askthe King/Prince to give deathpunishment to the culprit. Thisis the reason that Lord Ramdelivered the punishment of

death. Lord Ram furtherexplained that if a King islearned of Vedas and any per-son commits sin and the Kingpunishes the sinner then theculprit becomes free from thesin. In another instance whenHanuman destroyed AshokVatika and in return, Ravanasentenced him to death, thelearned Vibheeshan askedRavana to reconsider since theambassador of a King can neverbe sentenced to death but otherlesser punishment can beawarded. Keeping in mind theVedic dharma, Ravana with-drew his death punishmentbut punished Hanuman byburning his languli (extendedportion of langoti).

The above instances revealthat in the previous yugas, theGovernments did not maketheir own constitution butpreached, ordered or advisedbased on the Vedas, to give jus-tice. Today, every country hasits own constitution but inaddition keeping in view theVedas traditionally if a King, hispoliticians and intellectuals alsobecome learned of the Vedasthen I think more justice wouldbe delivered in the public. SinceVedas are impartial and univer-sally applicable, whereas therespective constitutions areapplicable to respective coun-tries, shouldn't we revert backto the Vedas?

Maldives is a country nothing lessthan a dream. Surrounded with

water, spread over 1200 dispersedislands of which barely 200 are inhab-ited, this is what we call paradise.Interested to go but the costs areburning a hole in your pocket? Manywould be surprised to know that thiscountry can be visited on a budget. Youdo not have save it for a special occa-sion like a honeymoon or an anniver-sary, but visit this country multipletimes as it is bound to surprise youevery time. Here is how you visit theMaldives without splurging your sav-ings.

# !5This is a key to travelling within thebudget. International carriers flying tothe Maldives are a mixture of scheduledand charter airlines. Indian low costcarrier like Go Air operates fromDelhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru.

!< Go during low season, which runs fromMay to November, Maldives will sur-prise you with the rates of accommo-dation. However, since this periodcoincides with the monsoon season(May to October), you will get cloudyskies and rains, which has a charm ofits own.

5 Maldives offers two types of islands:local and private. The private islands areusually owned by resorts while the localislands are the ones that are inhabitedand offer the true Maldivian flavoursand also offer a wider range of shops

and restaurants. An ideal stay at thisdestination would include a guesthouseat a local island along with a few daysin resort islands.

Since the tourism industry has beenbooming, the type of guesthouses arenothing less than a 4-star hotel andoffer exclusivity as its unique sellingpoint. Consider this, an island whichhas only 30 inhabitants including thestaff of the guesthouse and you. Suchcould be your stay at Plumeria BoutiqueMaldives on the Thinadhoo Island(Vavoo Atoll). Enjoy a sandbank break-fast or swim with the sharks at reason-able prices here and be assured thiswould change your perspective onaffordable luxury.

For those who wish to considerstaying at private islands, the AitkenSpence properties—Adaaran ClubRannalhi (Kaafu Atoll) and AdaaranSelect Hudhuranfushi (North MaleAtoll), are some good options to con-

sider. At these properties stay in oceanvillas to experience the ocean up closelike never before.

!<5#!! Since 99 per cent of the Maldives is cov-ered with water and only one percentcontributes land mass, it is quite nat-ural that most of the transport is by fer-

ries and boats. Though speedboats area faster way to travel, they cost muchhigher for a single trip as compared toa local ferry. Local ferries run on asomewhat infrequent schedule but arequite cheap. Avoid the seaplanes ifyou’re on a budget but if money is notyour concern then this too is an expe-rience not to miss.

His batting conquests arealready a stuff of legendsand a World Cup victorywill be like the 'Kohinoor' in'King' Virat Kohli's crown.

His tunnel vision quest for the crown-ing glory will be littered with many hur-dles — which may come in the garb ofSteve Smith and David Warner, theAustralians who have been longing fora career resurrection for more than 12months now.

And then there is Irishman EoinMorgan leading the England team, as heseeks to end a '44-year-old English itch'— no WC victory since 1975 — backed

by a team packed with talent andambition like never before.

During the next sixand half weeks 10 coun-

tries will play againsteach other for globalcricket's most covetedcrown and the battlewill begin with aclash between firmfavourites and hostsEngland and SouthAfrica onThursday.

A minimumof five victorieswill be required toqualify for thesemi-finals andthat will be theprimary aim ofthe teams.

W h i l eIndia, Englandand Australia

headline theevent, a disciplined

New Zealand, themavericks from Pakistan

and the flamboyantCaribbeans are well capable ofwinning the title.

On batting belters, it willbe the potent bowling attacksthat will hold the key andJasprit Bumrah along with

two talented wrist spinnersKuldeep Yadav and YuzvendraChahal are expected to play

pivotal roles in India's cam-paign.

The batting line-up is oneof the most formidable withKohli leading from thefront, Rohit Sharma provid-ing the zing and HardikPandya the flamboyance.

The Indian team wouldstrive to make it a memo-rable World Cup swansongfor Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who will be playing hisfourth and final mega event.

The middle-order doeshave some issues but India

are firmly in contention and a semi-finalslot is there for the taking.

For Australia, the perfect reintegra-tion of David Warner and Steve Smithin the set-up was just what the teamneeded.

Add to it, Usman Khawaja, skipperAaron Finch, pacers Pat Cummins andMitchell Starc, spinner Nathan Lyon andAdam Zampa and it gives them a formi-dable look.

Since the inception of World Cup in1975 (60-overs a side Prudential Cupback then), no England team has had somuch of hype surrounding it as the cur-rent one, led by Morgan.

Precisely due to the presence of someof the most prolific ODI batsmen that theworld has ever seen. Jos Buttler, JonnyBairstow, Morgan, Root are menacingboth on paper as well as on the 22-yards.

Jofra Archer's late addition hasgiven them the much-needed boostalongside Mark Wood, Adil Rashid in thebowling department. Ben Stokes andMoeen Ali are the three-dimensionalcricketers with multiple skill sets that canupset plans of any opposition.

Pakistan are going into the tourna-ment with a string of defeats and anunsettled feel where Muhammad Amirand Wahab Riaz have been late entrants, more due to their experience than per-formance.

Fakhar Zaman, Imam ul Haq,Mohammad Hafeez, Babar Azam andHaris Sohail are all talented players intheir own rights but like all Pakistanteams of the past, there are no guaran-tees as to when they will play as a unit.

There is something about NewZealand which always keeps them in themix at all global events. A matured cap-tain and a world class batsman in KaneWilliamson makes the Black Caps oneof the most likeable teams. The likes ofMartin Guptill, Colin Munro are goodplayers in their own right and on theirday could make a difference.
