The Eventful and Rich History of Jefferson County Colorado

Jefferson County Colorado An Eventful History!Dinosaurs, Native Americans, early settlers, castles, amazing parks and so much more…

A colorful celebration of this amazing county!

By Carole Lomond and noted JeffCo historians

A Useful and Entertaining Book to Give and Receive!

Jefferson County is one of Colorado’s “Crown Jewels.” More than one-third of JeffCo’s 775 square miles of mountains and plains have been preserved by federal, state, county, and city governments. All 540,000 residents live within a ten-minute drive of a Colorado Getaway to historic Wild West nature trails. Excellent

public and private schools and colleges serve diverse neighborhoods from urban condos to horse ranches in the rural foothills.

This book celebrates 150 years since Colorado’s initial “Provisional Territory Government” began at Mount Vernon and Golden in 1859. Once an agricultural and mining area, JeffCo residents developed a thriving economy where the great plains meet the Rocky Mountains with some of the

most magnificent scenery in the world. In 2009, it has become the best place to live and work in Colorado!

Evergreen Rodeo Evergreen’s natural splendor was

blessed further by its robust Western flavor. Buffalo Bill Saddle Club organized the first Evergreen rodeo in 1947 at a dusty arena at Highway 74 and Meadow Drive. Kicking off the festivities was a Main Street parade featuring handsome Ara-bian horses, brass bands, a gaudy armada of floats representing local merchants and resort hotels, and an unruly herd of neighborhood dogs. The all-volunteer Bear Creek Rodeo Association took the reins in 1966, building a new arena on 16 acres in El Pinal and gradually adding attractions from Mutton Bustin’ to a wet and wild Rodeo Regatta on Evergreen Lake.

Spring Monsoon could provide dry fuel for wildfireMore than half of Jefferson County is in

the Red Zone of wildfire danger. Some resi-dents have taken responsibility by removing dry fuel at least 30 feet from their home and trimming trees 30 feet up from the ground. A healthy forest is spacious and therefore resilient. An unhealthy forest is dense and vulnerable. All fire districts have the power to REQUIRE residents to manage their property responsibly.

It takes courage to enforce safety when homeowners do not want to remove dense fuel. Genesee Fire and Rescue is imple-menting a Community Wildfire Protection Program that works with every individual property owner to identify specific wildland fire hazards and risks and implement action to reduce risks. RTD West Line FasTracks Construction

The Regional Transportation District (RTD) announced progress on the FasTracks transit expansion programs as the contractor for the West Corridor Light Rail Project has moved into full construction. RTD and the Denver Transit Construction Group (DTCG) have signed the construction agreement, which triggers a formal Notice to Proceed for the contractor to mobilize into major construction. Stimulus Funding of $40 mil-lion will help build light rail from Union Station to Golden.

As Denver Transit Construction Group kicks off full construction, major operations will begin along West 6th Avenue. Crews will be placing concrete traffic barriers along the south side of Sixth Avenue, west of Union, to prepare for construction of more than 3,000 feet of retaining walls. Other operations will include construction of the bridges over Sixth Avenue east of Simms/Union, the large flyover bridge spanning Sixth Avenue and Indiana Street and the bridge over Colfax Avenue east of Sixth Avenue.

* U.S. Senators Ken Salazar and Wayne Allard sponsored federal preemption of local land use control to enable Denver stations to build a new DTV “supertower” facility on Lookout Mountain. The legislation became law without a Congressional vote on December 9, 2006. District Court Judge R. Brook Jackson therefore dismissed the suit brought by the City of Golden, CARE, and many individuals representing 50,000 citizens within a five-mile radius. Assuming the NBC, CBS, ABC stations will abide by their 2003 Supertower proposal, JeffCo Commissioners approved the “Lake Cedar Group, LLC” proposal on March 12, 2007. The TV stations are required to send signals east, not 360 degrees, to protect thousands of families in Mt. Vernon Canyon.

The constant state of worldwide revolution has effected nearly everyone, including small neighborhood organizations. After six years of opposition by a few, a new digital tower for Public Television Channel 6 will rise on Mt. Morrison. The initial intention to overturn JeffCo Commissioners approval was to prevent any new radiation on Lookout Mountain or Mt. Morrison. Canyon Area Residents for the Environment (CARE), a consortium of neighborhoods in Mt. Vernon Canyon has always recommended Squaw Mountain and other high-altitude unpopulated alternative sites that do not send radiation into populated areas. However, CARE’s November 20, 2008 filing with the Court of Appeals to

overturn approval recommended populated Lookout Mountain as an alternative to unpopulated Mt. Morrison. Citizens were not informed of this litigation by the board, which was not legally elected by a required majority of 28 neighborhood representatives. When the decision got around by word of mouth in January, about 50 residents came to a CARE meeting on February 7, 2009 demanding removal of Lookout Mountain as an alternative site. Their attempt to legally elect a new board was dismissed. A new board, again without being elected by a majority of neighborhood delegates, are attempting to revive citizen participation.
