HWY 621:02 PEMBINA RIVER BRIDGE (BF74969) INSTRUMENTATION MONITORING RESULTS- REPORT 14

Dear Sir:

This letter presents the instrumentation monitoring results carried out by Thurber Engineering Ltd. for the above noted project. This is the last set of instrumentation readings taken for this assignment.

1. OBSERVATIONS

1.1 Field Program and Instrumentation Status

Two slope inclinometers (SI13-1 and 8113-3), one standpipe piezometer (SP13-3), and four vibrating wire piezometers (VW13-1A, VW13-1 , VW13-2 and VW13-3) were read on January 19, 2015, by Mr. James Galipeau of Thurber Engineering Ltd. (Thurber). One strain gauge (SG13-2) and three tiltmeters (5038, 5041 , and 5042) were also monitored during the reading event. Slope inclinometers Sl1 and Sl14-1 and pneumatic piezometers PZ1 and PZ2 could not be read as the instruments were frozen. VW13-2 did not show an output on the readout and may have malfunctioned.

The Sis were read using a RST Digital Inclinometer probe with 2 ft. wheelbase and a RST Pocket PC readout. Inclinometer reading depths were defined as per cable markings with respect to the top of the inclinometer casing. The strain gauges were read using a RST Pocket PC readout. The vibrating wire piezometers were read using a GEO-KON GK-404 Digital VW data recorder device. The standpipe piezometer was read using a SINCO dipmeter.

2. INTERPRETATION

2.1 Zones of Movement

Zones of movement are summarized in Table 1 at the end of this report. This table also provides a historical account of the total movement, the depth of movement, and the maximum rate of movement that has occurred at this site since the initialization of the slope inclinometers.

2.2 Interpretation of Monitoring Results

Slope inclinometer Sl13-1 showed no discernible movement since the December 17, 2014 reading. Sl13-3 showed a creep rate of movement of 4.9 mm/yr over 16.6 m to 20.3 m depth.

The water levels in pneumatic piezometers PZ1 and PZ2 could not be read as the instruments were frozen. The pneumatic piezometer readings are summarized in Table 2.

The ground water level recorded in standpipe piezometer SP13-3 decreased by 0.15 m, since the December 17, 2014 reading , to 2.26 m below ground surface. The standpipe piezometer reading is summarized in Table 3.

The ground water levels decreased in vibrating wire piezometers VW13-1 A, VW13-1 and VW13-3 by 0.11 m, 0.08 m, and 0.08 m, respectively, since the previous readings on December 17, 2014. VW13-2 did not show an output on the readout and may be damaged. The instrument status will need to be confirmed during the next reading event. The vibrating wire piezometer readings are summarized in Table 4.

Four strain gauges were installed on the east ends of the bridge girders to monitor the stresses on the bridge structure. One strain gauge (SG13-2) remains functioning while the other three were reported stolen on July 31 , 2014. After initial increases in stress was observed in the strain gauges during the installation of the sub-drains, the stress recorded on the girder appears to have decreased. The stresses recorded in the strain gauges since completion of the sub-drains appears to be related to thermal expansion and contraction of the bridge girders. A plot of the true load related strain for strain gauge SG13-2, up to January 19, 2015, is attached to the end of this letter.

Three biaxial tiltmeters were installed on the bridge piers on March 7, 2014 to monitor movement of the piers. The tiltmeters measure the rotation perpendicular (Axis A) and parallel (Axis B) to the pier. A plot of the change in rotation from installation date in the A and B axes is attached to the end of this letter.

The Sl and piezometer plots, as well as the instrumentation field monitoring sheets are provided at the end of this letter. The instrument locations are presented on Drawing No. 15-16-282-1 .

3. RECOMMENDATIONS

3.1 Future Work

The instruments should continue to be read by the GRMP geotechnical engineering consultant for this region twice per year.
