CONCERNING BOER PRISONERS OF WAR WHO DIED AND WERE BURIED ON THE ISLAND OF ST HELENA. SOUTH ATLANTIC OCEAN, 1900 to 1903

During a visit to St Helena I have collated information obtained in the Archive Office from the official Register of Deaths, from their copies of "De Krijgsgevangene" and from the inscriptions on the memorial pillars in Knollcombe Boer Cemetery.

The Register totals 160.The memorials total 180 (One name was omitted from the Register (Grave 85, H. Roos) and nineteen more names appear on the South pillar. It is queried whether some or all of these may have died after leaving St Helena.)Knollcombe Boer Cemetery holds 156 numbered graves.Approximately 6,000 Boers were held on the island in two camps, Deadwood Plain and Broad Bottom.

The columnised details are(1)(2)

•*—

Issue No. 5 printed a comprehensive list of "de overledenen vanaf 23sten April 1900 tot 2 Juli 1901."There is presumably more information to be gathered from Nos.3 and 10, but my request to Uryheidoorlogsmuseum, Bloemfontein, R.S.A., for ad'ice or information, has hair’ested no reply.Issue No. 6 carried an Editorial by H. E<eritt, headed,"Grafsteen of Gedenkteenen . . . wat is van de ingewome gelden geworden ?" (Gravestone or Memorial . . . what has happened to the money already collected ?) It goes on to state (in sorrow more than anger) that £29.9s.51jd. had been collected; that £25.0.0. had been promised by a Russian prince, a one-time fellow-prisoner, later transferred to Europe; that £54.0.0. would buy a very good stone . . ."A privet hedge had already been planted round the ground and tenders had been invited for making numbers for each grave."I found no answers or solutions to the problem or query in subsequent issues, but the hedge stands and the graves are numbered.

I have been meticulous in copying the varied spelling of names, the initials and the ages from all three sources. Comparisons are interesting : the Register scribed by English clerks, the Northern pillar by contemporaries, the Southern pillar (1913) adopting Afrikaans versions of the names (cf. 5335 Vanberg / v.d. Berg; 5245 Mentges /Meintjes). While a miniature biography seems to come through 5136 M. Nielsen, recorded as M. Nelson on the pillar and in the magazine remembered by his friends as Matt Nelson who had been born in Finnland in 1875.

With regard to ages it is moving to record teenage deaths (4968 - 17 years, 5115 - 18, 5350 - 17, 5351 - 19, 5353 - 19) or to note the ages of the old men (5086 - 74, 5180 - 69?4, 5263 - 74, 5374 - 74).Both the men who were shot by sentries were young (4956 - 20 and 5096 - 19). I found no record of either of these two incidents in the "St Helena Guardian" although at times it carried various news and reports on the Prisoners of war.

Cause of Death : There was not always agreemen on Cause of Death between the Register and "De Krijgsgevangene". Of the many deaths Registered due to "enteric", the magazine gave three of them as :-

5032 - inflamatie van longen(which 1 translate as inflamation of the lungs).

5148 - zwakheid (weakness)5165 - maag koorts (stomach fever).

Plus seven of them due to "typhoid koorts" (typhoid fever).Enteric Fever 1902 : From 5 May to 29 May there were 13 deaths ascribed to enteric (of a total 21 deaths in this period). From 6 June to 28 June there were 6 (total 14 deaths) and in July there were 4 (total 6 deaths).

/continued

Deaths of military personnel or of island folk due to enteric were not noticeably numerous over this period but there is a Register record

Some illnesses probably had histories longer than the sufferers' sojourn on St Helena. For example (5035) In spite of different diagnoses (apoplexy in the Register and Beroerten (stroke) in the magazine) either illness would have been of long-standing. I was shocked, having previously only associated it with miners with lives spent underground, to find a Register case (5067) of phthisis fatal to a 21-year old; but the magazine uses the word 'tering* which I understand in the layman's translation as consumption or TB, which seemed more understandable. A postmortem (5070) revealed "Valvular disease of heart" which the magazine reported as 'hartkwaal' and I translate as (heart failure). In these few examples, although at slight variance, the sources would seem agreed on the long past-history. There are many more in the list.

( 1 ) I am grateful for access to the Archives of the Island of St Helena and to the Archivist, Mr Cecil Maggott, for the advice and guidance so readily given. My gratitude also extends to Mr Tom Webb of Cape Town, R.S.A., who gave me encouragement in my project and supplied the copy of details from memorial pillars in Knollcombe Boer Cemetery from which I have worked.

Stephanie Hasler. August 1986.

5355 28 May Alexander Birch 24 yrsCivil Surgeon in military service.Died at Broad Bottom Camp of enteric fever.

Lung3 : To this day the most frequent island illness is “flu" (not called "a cold") and the damp mists and winds and the humidity do not seem to be conducive to sound lungs. Small wonder then that the Register of Deaths records a total of pulmonary or bronchial illnesses leading to death of :-

25 (of 108 total) to 4 May 1902 and 4 (of 52 total) to 4 May 1903.
