Air travel...“At group level, our corporatetravel business in India hasissued over 85,000 tickets in(the first) ninemonthsof FY21(April-December 2020), witha significant quarter-on-quar-ter growth and an overall 800per cent surge versus firstquarter of FY21. These arevery encouraging signsindicative of the growing con-fidence in travel from thebusiness segment, withincreased momentumtowards recovery,” saidIndiverRastogi, president andgroup head (global businesstravel), Thomas Cook (India).

AVistaraspokespersonalsosaid the demand for businesstravel was 40-50 per cent ofpre-Covidcorporatetraffic,andthe demand for the premiumcabins was also on the rise.

EmbassyIndustrialParks isdeveloping warehousing proj-ects at Chakan in Pune,Sriperumbudur and Hosur inTamil Nadu, in FarrukhnagarandBilaspur inDelhi-NationalCapital Region, and in KothurinTelangana.
TheJV’s totalportfolio is15-16million square (sq.) feet (ft),ofwhich4millionsq. ft isoper-ational. For Blackstone, ware-housingseemstobenewfocusareaafter itenteredofficeprop-erties in 2011 and then mallssubsequently.Blackstonefloat-ed twoREITswith its partners,Embassy and K RahejaCorporation, and listed them.
It will be Blackstone’s sec-ond venture in warehousingafter it floated a JV withHiranandaniGroup.
In late 2019, BlackstoneformedaJVwithGreenBase, aHiranandani Group firm, todevelop warehousing andlogistics parks, marking itsentry into the Indian ware-housing and logistics sector.TheequalJVplannedto investover ~2,500 crore to develop
around 12 million sq. ft ofindustrial and warehousingassets across the country inthree to four years.
DFI...Theproposalemphasised that,prior to the transfer, IIFCLshall fully provide for all itsoutstandingbadassets, so thatthenew institutionwill have aclean book. It also said anyadditional requirement ofmoney will be given throughdemand for grants subse-quently.
According to the proposeddraft, there are multiple bene-fits of the new DFI, includingaccess to low-cost funds froma priority-sector shortfall andgreater headroom for borrow-ing, compared to other non-banking institutions.
Sources said the legislation—NaBFIDBill—willalsohaveaseparatesectionforsettingupaprivate-sectorDFI.
“The Centrewill own it ini-tially.However, at a later stage,it can reduce its stake to 26percent,” said a source.
UnveilingtheUnionBudgetfor FY22, the finance ministerhad said that a professionallymanaged DFI would be set uptoprovide,enable,andcatalyseinfrastructure financing. Shehad proposed ~20,000 crore tocapitalise this institution,aimedathavingalendingport-folio of at least ~5 trillion inthree years.
The need for a DFI arisessince banks face the challengeof an asset-liability mismatchin funding infrastructure proj-ects or other projects with alonggestationperiod.
The DFI is different fromcommercial banks, given itstrikesabalancebetweencom-mercialandoperationalnormsfollowedbycommercialbanks,and long-termcapital needs ofprojects.
At present, there are a fewfinancial institutions workingliketheDFI intheirnicheareasof infrastructure projects.These include the IndianRailway Finance Corporation,National Bank for Agricultureand Rural Development, andthe Small IndustriesDevelopmentBankof India.
Uttarakhand...The privately owned RishiGangapowerproject (130Mw),which is on the upper streamof theAlaknandariver,was thefirst tofacethebruntoftheava-lanche. The debris from thisplant caused damage to otherunits downstream.
Sources said apart fromTapovan (520 Mw), Pipal Koti(4x111Mw), thehydroprojectofstate-owned THDC, andVishnuprayag (400 Mw) ofJaypee Group also faced dam-ages. NHPC, the country’slargesthydropowerdeveloper,in a statement said it did nothavehydroprojects in the areaof distress and its power sta-tionswere safe.
The office of the chiefmin-ister said: “The flow from theTehridamwasstoppedtofacil-itate smooth passage of risingwaters on RishiGanga &Alaknanda. All the villages &low lying areas on the bankswerevacated&water flowfromSrinagar damwas increased tomanagehigherwater flowsdueto disaster.” The flow from theBhagirathi river was stopped.The state government hasasked the Srinagar andRishikesh dams to be emptiedto halt the flow of theAlaknanda. The police, army,Indo-Tibetan Border Police,and the State Disaster ReliefForce are on the spot.
The CM also said no floodsituation had been reportedanywhere. “No additionalwater flows are being reported
& there is no flood situationanywhere. No loss has beenreported from villages alongtheAlaknanda,” he said.
Experts have called forextreme caution now whenawarding infrastructure proj-ects in the area.
“This is not a wake-up callbut an attempt to stop a run-ning man and telling him youare running wrong. The cofferdam (Chamoli) itself had bro-ken three times. This incidentcan happen again. If the datawas not available, the whymakethisdam?It is theliabilityof the decision makers. It is acriminal offence,” said VimalBhai of the Matu JanSanghthan, an NGO workingon adverse effects of largehydro and infrastructure proj-ects in the region.
In June 2013, heavy rain,coupled with flash floods inseveral areas in Uttarakhand,killed over 5,000 people andcaused major damages to vil-lages, livestock anddams.
The Union Ministry ofWater Resources, RiverDevelopment and GangaRejuvenation in 2016 filed anaffidavit intheSupremeCourt,saying several mountainousareas such as Uttarakhandshould be left untouched. Itsaid dams and river waterdiversions had caused signifi-cantdamagetotheriver lengthanddestroyedtheoriginalcon-tent and quality of the riverdownstream.
