In the end, everything became a lot messier and complicated, but there was much more functionality.

The entirety of the ingameHUD class was written while I was on break at work, using only Notepad++. When putting it in the project later that night, I was sure there would be some obvious error I should have seen, or that it would break everything, but it worked perfectly.
