In 1833, a group of men who were part of a union representing farm workers met in secret in the village of Tolpuddle in Dorset. They swore an oath of loyalty to fight for their interests. As a result of this simple act they were arrested , tried and transported to Australia. Following massive public protests, the men were returned to Britain, hailed as the Tolpuddle Martyrs.
