GWML2 IE IntroductionGWML2 IE Introduction
• Objectives:– Develop a GML compatible groundwater information model and
encoding from existing international initiatives (GWML1, INSPIRE);– Prepare an engineering report as a draft OGC data specification.
• Participants:– GSC-NRCan, USGS, DG-JRC, BRGM, CSIRO, BoM, GNS,
SalzburgUni, FedUni, GSG
• June 2012 Reading, UK Kick-off meeting:– 38 tele-meetings (1 face-to-face, Vienna May 2014);
• OGC Wiki Documentation:• http://external.opengis.org/twiki_public/HydrologyDWG/GroundwaterInteroperabili

GWML2 Use CasesGWML2 Use Cases
• Five use cases identified for testing:– Commercial - find water wells, estimate cost of water supply well
• http://external.opengis.org/twiki_public/HydrologyDWG/UseCase1
– Policy - meet EU Water Framework Directive requirements• http://external.opengis.org/twiki_public/HydrologyDWG/UseCase2
– Environmental - assess risks to groundwater dependent ecosystems• http://external.opengis.org/twiki_public/HydrologyDWG/UseCase3
– Scientific - determine flow of groundwater via modeling software• http://external.opengis.org/twiki_public/HydrologyDWG/UseCase4
– Technologic – map GWML2 to existing models• http://external.opengis.org/twiki_public/HydrologyDWG/UseCase5

GWML2 Logical ModelGWML2 Logical Model
• UML-GML representation of Conceptual model• http://external.opengis.org/twiki_public/HydrologyDWG/GWML2-UML-Model
– 6 application schema (GWML2-Main, Well, WellConstruction, Flow, Constituent, AquiferTest)
– External dependencies:• ISO19115, 19107, 19108, 19103, 19156, 19123, OGC SWE
– Extends: • Observations & Measurements (O&M), GeoSciML (v3.2),
InterleavedCoverages
– Cardinalities all [0..x] (cf GeoSciML, ANZSoilML)– GML XML schema implementation
• http://ngwd-bdnes.cits.nrcan.gc.ca/service/gwml/schemas/2.1/{.xsd}
– Other implementations deferred (e.g. JSON, RDF)• …until SWG?

XML encoding – items of noteXML encoding – items of note
• SWE Data Record used by lithology and stratigraphy logs• http://external.opengis.org/twiki_public/HydrologyDWG/GwmlSweDataRecord
– Defined GWML2 data records for stratigraphy and lithology• Could be extended to other downhole logs such as geophysical,
geochemistry, geochronology logs
– Makes the WFS verbose, but explicit
• O&M used directly for logical model fragments– Fluid, void, hydrogeounit and flow properties, geology logs– Encoding patterns described in engineering report
• Sampling Features – Specialized by GW_AquiferTest, GW_Well,

Next StepsNext Steps
• Finish IE prior to September 2015 HydroDWG– Refine report: technical GWML2 description (CM, LM, XML)– Complete use-case implementations and add results to report
• Propose/initiate GWML2 SWG at Sept 2015 OGC TC (Nottingham)
• See wiki for more details on all aspects:• http://external.opengis.org/twiki_public/HydrologyDWG/
