Musings of Mother DanáeIn American society, when we think of February, I find that we immediately think of Valentine’s Day. Valentine’s Day makes many of us think of romance and passion and, for some of us, unob-tainable or unrealistic romantic love that leaves us heartbroken. The longer we live, however, the more we find that there are so many different ways to love, that are not tied to romance, and to give that love to others. After all, as Christians, we believe that God showed us love first and it is our commission to extend it to others.

In light of this type of love, we often talk about how we care for each other within our church community, but what we really mean is how do the clergy, and to some extent us, take care of the community. We don’t usually pause to think about how our congregation is taking care of our priest or deacon and this is something that we should pause to reflect about from time to time.

A priest and deacon have gifts that mark their roles in the community, just as we all do. In the very simplest terms, priests are the keepers of the lore of the tradition and their sphere of operation is more within the church community—teach-ing, visiting, preaching, administering the sacra-ments—so that people can go out into the world empowered to do God’s work that they are called to.

The deacon’s role is complementary to and distinct from the priest’s role. Again, in the very simplest terms, deacons are the bridge that brings the outside world’s needs to the church commu-nity so that the community, empowered with their own gifts, can address those needs in Christian love together.

The gifts that each of us bring—cooking, teach-ing, music, financial aptitude, prayer, healing—the list can go on forever with the variety of gifts that people have—those gifts also contribute to the community, the building up of the Body of Christ.

We need all of our gifts, but we sometimes take for granted that because we are paying the priest or we have a deacon whose role is to serve, that they are not re-ally part of the community. They seem separate, yet they are not. They are part of the community and have needs, too.

It is within this context that I want to lift up the fine example of the St. Edward’s community. As we were faced with reigning in our budget and making staff cuts, our Vestry discerned a path to not only take care of the community, but also to take care of me, the priest within our community. This is how the Second Sunday Service days were born. Energized with the opportunity to directly connect our faith with outreach action on a Sun-day, the Vestry realized that because the church could not pay me a full-time salary any longer, they would also use those Sundays to give me a chance to do supply or speaking engagements that would bring some income to my family. This act has touched me deeply. I have found myself in a community that cares about me, just as I care about them.

While this model of ¾ time ministry is becoming commonplace throughout the wider church, I know that it was a leap of faith and a call to the unknown for us, which can be frightening. I ap-plaud the courage and faithfulness of our congre-gation to move forward into God’s new opportu-nities for us and know that we will be blessings because of our willingness to do something new. After all, isn’t that what being a Christian is all about? To be refreshing to others with the vital-ity from God’s love and to be blessings—to each other and to the world.

~ Be peace, be light, be love! Mo. Danáe+

vestry Profile: Fran Christianson

I am a cradle Episcopalian, having grown up with an Episcopal mother and a Roman Catholic Father. Growing up in the Church with four siblings, we all served as acolytes, ushers, choir members and readers. We belonged to a small mission church in South Dakota where everyone participated in day-to-day operation of the Church. Like St. Edward’s, we were also very active with outreach.

When I came to St. Edward’s fourteen years ago, my family had been searching for a new spiritual home. After the first visit I knew we had found our place. The people were warm and welcoming, and the group was small enough that it felt like family. After settling in, I started joining committees — first the Altar Guild, then the Garden Angels, Tea Committee, Thursday Bulletins, Plant Sale, and the Prayer Group. I have participated in multiple outreach activities, and last year became a vestry member. Being on the vestry has been more difficult for me than I had anticipated, but it is very fulfilling, and I am learn-ing more about myself, my faith, and the needs of our communities.

Since I have been here, St. Edward’s has overcome many obstacles. This has brought us closer together, made us stronger, and kept our faith strong. Let’s prayerfully start this year together to address new and exciting opportunities. I appreciate everyone’s prayers, suggestions, and support as we begin a new and exciting time for our faith family.

Peace in ChristFranzisca Christianson

The Lampstand February 2013

As you might imagine January 24, 2013 is a date that will be in my mind for many years to come. It was for me a day filled with anticipation, excite-ment, and I must admit, a little anxiety. But it was in the end a wonderful day filled with many bless-ings. It has been a blessing for me to be supported and held up in prayer by so many of you during my journey to the diaconate. And it was a bless-ing for me to have my family and so many friends from all walks of my life at the ordination service. To reach this stage in my journey after nearly four years of preparation was gratifying, but also humbling.

Now that I am officially a Deacon in the Church, I find myself thinking yet again about what my diaconal ministry will be and seeing how being asked that question so many times during forma-tion has prepared me to continue seeking the an-swers. From the questions I am getting from some of you I can see that you wonder a little about this as well. So, I thought it would be worthwhile to spend a little time considering what a Deacon is and what a Deacon is not.

A Deacon is a servant who assists the Bishop and Priests with the liturgy. This service is most visible in the Eucharist, during which the Deacon pro-claims the Gospel, sets the table, and does the dismissal. I was allowed to set the table during my training, but on the first Sunday after my ordina-tion I was afforded the honor and privilege of proclaiming the Gospel and doing the dismissal for the first time, which were for me very moving experiences.

A Deacon is a messenger who brings the concerns of the world and the needs of the community to the church and a catalyst who leads the church into the world to do the work that God has given it to do. The role of the Deacon in mission is where I feel I am most strongly called to be. I am sure that will not come as a surprise to any of you. What may surprise you is how broadly I think about mis-sion. For me, mission is not just outreach. It is also

From Chip Whitacre, our new Deacon

evangelism, teaching, service, advocacy, care for God’s creation and peacemaking.

A Deacon is not a substitute for a priest. The previous Bishop of Minnesota discontinued the practice of congregations relying on Deacons to conduct Morning and Evening Prayer and Dea-cons’ Masses when a priest was not available. His rationale for this was based on a concern that adding such work to the Deacon’s responsibilities drew them away from the work that they were supposed to be doing. The current Bishop has continued this tradition and I both understand and support that decision.

I am honored to have been raised up to this ministry by St. Edward’s and I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your support, encourage-ment and prayers over the years. I know that this short essay does not answer all the questions you may have, but I would be happy to entertain any and all other questions regarding the role of the Deacon as best I can.

Blessings, Chip

Lynne Whitacre, Bishop Brian Prior, and Chip Whitacre, at Chip’s ordination to the diaconate at St. Mark’s Cathedral January 24.

Thank you from Sharon LaneI was very surprised and pleased to receive a “Christmas Bonus” from the wonderful parish of St. Edward’s. What an exciting way to start a new year! I really enjoy working for this parish. I want you all to know it has been put to good use. I have been looking for just the right boots…cowboy boots…and I found them. Thank you all so very much. ~ Sharon Lane

Calling all nursery volunteers! The nursery is open for kids age 5 and under on Sunday during the “school” year. We are lucky to have Carrie Lancaster to work in the nursery for us. Each week, in order to fulfill the requirements of operating under the “ Safe Church ” practices, we also need an additional volunteer to work with Carrie while the nursery is open. This is so that if there were an emergency, there would be someone to stay with the kids and someone to attend to whatever the situation might be. Each month an e-mail is distributed with the dates that a nursery volunteer is needed. If you are able to help out on a certain date, all you need to do is respond to the e-mail. It’s THAT easy!! If there are no children by 9:35 or so, please feel free to return to the service. Thank you !!Pulpit exchange

Prayers of the PeopleTherefore confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another, so that you may be healed. The prayer of the righteous is powerful and effective. ~ James 5:16

This feature of our Lampstand was formerly in our bulletin. It is our hope that you will use this list to pray for each other all month long. We will still include the litany of names within our liturgy in Prayers of the People, but the explanations that used to be at the back of the bulletin are what will now be in the Lampstand. If you would like to add or update the prayer list, please contact Sharon at the church office: 952.473.2262 or [email protected].
