Heat, wind spur California fireACalifornia wildfire

that closed nearly200 square miles of

forest forced evacuationsacross state lines into Neva-da on Friday as winds andscorching, dry weatherdrove flames forwardthrough trees and brush. The Beckwourth Complexwhich began as two light-ning-caused fires in PlumasNational Forest showed ex-treme behaviour," fire in-formation officer Lisa Coxsaid Friday evening. Hotrising air formed a gigantic, smoky pyrocumulus cloudthat reached thousands offeet high and created itsown lightning, Cox said.

Spot fires caused byembers leapt up to a mile(1.6 kilometers) ahead ofthe northeastern flank toofar for firefighters to safelybattle, Cox said.

Winds up to about 20mph (32 kph) on ridgetopswere funneling flames updraws and canyons full ofdry fuel, where it can actu-ally pick up speed," Coxsaid. By evening, the firewas approaching U.S. 395,a main interstate in thenorthern Sierra Nevada notfar from the border. Al-though the flames hadn'tcrossed that divide, theWashoe County Sheriff'sOffice told people to evac-uate some areas in the ruralcommunities of RanchHaven and Flanagan Flats, north of Reno.

Evacuate now," a Sher-iff's office tweet said. Al-though there are no con-firmed reports of buildingdamage, the fire alreadyprompted evacuation or-ders or warnings for hun-

dreds of homes and severalcampgrounds in Californiaalong with the closure ofnearly 200 square miles ofPlumas National Forest.

The blaze, which wasonly 11% contained, offi-cially had blackened morethan 38 square miles (98square kilometers) but thatfigure was expected to in-crease dramatically whenfire officials were able tomake better observations.

Nearly 1,000 firefight-ers were aided by aircraftbut the blaze was expectedto continue leaping throughtrees and chaparral that al-ready are bone-dry becauseof low humidity and a heatwave forecasted to continuethrough the weekend.

We're expecting moreof the same the day after

and the day after and theday after, Cox said. The airwas so dry that some of thewater dropped by aircraftevaporated before itreached the ground, shesaid. The fire was one ofseveral burning in the West, including several that de-stroyed dozens of Califor-nia homes in recent days.

In the region betweenthe Oregon border and thenorthern end of the CentralValley, the big Lava andTennant fires were signifi-cantly contained, andprogress was reported at theSalt Fire as containmentimproved to 45%. The SaltFire has burned 27 homesand 14 outbuildings northof Redding, which hit 100degrees (37.7 Celsius) be-fore 11 a.m. The Lava Fire

destroyed 20 structures, in-cluding 13 homes, anddamaged two structures. The Tennant Fire destroyedfive buildings, includingtwo homes. In north-centralArizona, increased humidi-ty slowed a big wildfire thatposed a threat to the ruralcommunity of Crown King. The 24.5-square-mile(63.5-square-kilometer)lightning-caused fire inYavapai County was 29%contained. Recent rains al-lowed five national forestsand state land managers tolift public-access closures.

Climate change is con-sidered a key driver" of atrend that is creating longerand more intense dry sea-sons that increase moisturestress on vegetation andmake forests more suscepti-

ble to severe wildfire," theCalifornia Department ofForestry and Fire Protec-tion said recently. Fire crewofficials will be briefing thecommunity on progress Fri-day evening at the Chilo-quin Community Center. The meeting will bestreamed on the Facebookpage for the Fremont-Winema National Forestbeginning at 7 p.m.

In Oregon, pushed bystrong winds, a wildfire inKlamath County grew fromnearly 26 square miles (67square kilometers) Thurs-day to nearly 61 squaremiles (158 square kilome-ters) on Friday in the Fre-mont-Winema NationalForest and on private land.It was 0% contained, ac-cording to a Facebook post

by the incident manage-ment team. Klamath Coun-ty Emergency Managementon Friday issued an imme-diate evacuation order forpeople in certain areasnorth of Beatty and nearSprague River. Californiadispatched two strike teamswith wildland engines tohelp. In Idaho, Gov. BradLittle declared a wildfireemergency Friday and mo-bilized the state's NationalGuard to help fight firessparked after lightningstorms swept across thedrought-stricken region.Fire crews in north-centralIdaho were facing extremeconditions and gusts as theyfought two wildfires cover-ing a combined 19.5 squaremiles (50.5 square kilome-ters).

Literature & Health

Daughters- Abode of love and possessivenessTwo literary masterpieces,

namely Old Goriot, a worldclassic by Mr Honore'DE

Balzac,a French author of 19th cen-tury and Paula, world'sbest tragicmemoir by Isabel Allende, livingliterary geniusaroused my interestto delveinto the institution ofdaughters and their love, expecta-tions, attachment, possessivenessand relationships vis-a-vis withtheirparents. Love, affection, pos-sessiveness, sacrifice, devotion etc.are very much commonin both thesplendid books but journey of emo-tions and conclusions are polesapart. In the first book, Old Goriot, the main character had two daugh-ters, passionately loved them andsacrificedwhatsoever he had - mon-ey, jewellery, precious articles etc.for the sake of happiness and com-forts of his daughters. With the pas-sage of time, visits of his daughtersbecame few and far between, whichwere regular earlier, thus pushing

him intoloneliness and helpless-ness. Old age gripped his body af-fecting his health, forcing him to bebed ridden, became penniless andhis condition turned miserable. Atthe time of dying, he expressed hisdesire to see his daughters, but theydid not turn up. Out of disgust andfrustration he made some nasty re-marks on the role of his daughtersand sons-in-law and painted themto be utterly selfish and opportunis-tic.

Paula was the daughter of Is-abelAllende, fallen ill of some fam-ily ailment and remained in theHospital and that too "in coma".Throughout the period of her ill-ness, Isabell Allende remained atbed side of her daughter and shebreathed her last in her lap. Demiseof Paula, an emotional upheaval, tormented, shattered and torn herfrom within and she lost interest inher precious living life and aban-doned her gifted art of writing. It is

after intense persuasion by her fam-ily members that she resumed herwriting. The analytical study ofthese two revelations, raised ques-tionnaires to the parents as well asto the daughters; whether so muchlove/attachment/possessiveness onthe part of the parents justified?Whether daughters who have beenbrought up and cared with so muchlove and comforts, justified to ig-nore the parents?Whether the deathof a loved one means end of theworld for the person?

In fact, expectation of love andrespect on part of the parents is anatural phenomenon notonly be-cause they care and love them butalso because they have blood rela-tionships and pious bonding. Buttoo much indulgence and posses-siveness by the parents are some-times not bring desired positivity. But at the same time, daughtersshould also love and respect theirsentiments, should behave in such a

manneras their parents don't feelneglected and should not become acause of pain and agony. Thedaughters should keep in mind thattheir parents are their best well-wishers and whatsoever they do, itwill be for their benefit. Exceptionsare always there, in the oldbygoneera, people used their daughters astools and marry them withkings/princes/rich and influentialpeople to win their favour/ to settleold enmity or sometimes out of fearand danger to their life, but now thetime has changed a lot and suchcruel practices, given the cover ofcustoms have become almost obso-lete.But sometimes, under the influ-ence of emotional intensity, theloved ones take a step in haste with-out apprehending the adverse con-sequences proving disaster forwhole of the family.

Such incidences have beencontinuously happening since timeimmemorial but the tragic love sto-

ry of RuttieJinnah is worth men-tioning here. RuttieJinnah was thedaughter of Sir Dinshaw Petit, oneof the most influential businessicon from Parsi Clan. At the age of16, she fell in love with Mr.Muhammad Ali Jinnah (he being 40years old) and when she crossed18,tied knot in the courtwith herlover against the wishes of the par-ents and even without their knowl-edge. Humiliation and gloom en-gulfed the merry making atmos-phere of the Petit family andDin-shawnever reconciled with the mar-riage and remained disgusted and-felt cheated throughouthis life asM.A.Jinnah, was very good familyfriend. Ruttie Jinnah died at the ageof 29 having married life only for11 years and that too full of suffer-ings, sickness and frustrations. Herheart rendingdisappointment can besensedfrom the following sentencewhichsheaddressed to her choicesthusband Mr. Jinnah:

"You plucked the flower tolove and not to tread upon". As perthe centuries old customs and tradi-tions, it has been a universallyac-cepted truth that girls are to be mar-ried and leave their parental house-for a new abode and same has beenbeautifully exhibited in a popularsong by Surinder Kaur, a celebratedPunjabi Folk Singer. Hae o meredhadeyarabba Kinnajammiakinnane laijaania".

This hard fact should be grace-fully accepted by the parents and al-low their daughters to live theirown life in a new environment.Take the excellent example of RajaJanak, most learned and spiritualking was in a very joyous mood atthe time of vidaiof his daughter,Sita. But while Sita sitting in thedoli, spoke to her mother, "As I amgoing, please take care of my father.Give him medicines in time.",RajaJanak could not control his tearsand wept bitterly. But after she left

Mithila, Raja Janak never ever in-terfered in the affairs of Ayod-hya,which faced so many upheaval-son the family front affecting Sitaseverely. (As told in the Shri Ra-mayana). In the end, being a newentrant into the literary arena, Ican't categorically pass any judge-ments, still I feel that love, affec-tion, possessiveness are subjectiveemotions and depend upon the cor-respondingcircumstances and fami-ly setup. However I say that toomuch indulgence of love and pos-sessiveness leads to astray andgrievously harmful for both thesides as it has been rightly said"over expectation and indulgenceare often the enemy of our pleas-ure". At the same time daughtersshould also reciprocate in the sameway as parents has showered flow-ers of love and care selflessly andwith devotion. Happiness and ap-prehensive fear of the parents hasbeen intelligently explored in the

following anonymous quote: The Day, you came into the

world was the day that my life wasforever changed. I never thought itwas possible to see so many differ-ent relations at the same time. Onelook at your beautiful face and I feltoverjoy, in credulous, blessed, re-lieved, exhausted and utterly terri-fied. Tailpiece: We do Kanjakpoo-jan on the auspicious Ashtami ofNavratra but still birth of the girlchild is not welcomed by all. Weshould strive to awaken the peopleand inculcate the slogan that "nodifference in male and femalechildas both are equally preciousand gifts of God".

Weekly dance training impactful forParkinson's disease patients

Arecent study suggests thatweekly dance training withmusic can prove to be bene-

ficial for people suffering from themost debilitating symptoms ofParkinson's disease.

The study, publishedin the journal 'Brain Sci-ences', found that patientswith mild-to-moderateParkinson's disease (PD)can slow the progress ofthe disease by participat-ing in dance training withmusic for one-and-a-quar-ter hours per week.

Over the course ofthree years, this activitywas found to reduce dailymotor issues such as thoserelated to balance andspeech, which often leadto social isolation.

Joseph DeSouza, senior author, principal investigator, and associateprofessor in the Department of Psy-chology at York University and PhDcandidate Karolina Bearss foundpeople with Parkinson's (PwPD)who participated in weekly dancetraining, had a less motor impair-ment and showed significant im-provement in areas related tospeech, tremors, balance and rigidi-ty compared to those who did not doany dance exercise. Their data

showed significant improvements inexperiences of daily living, whichinclude cognitive impairment, hal-lucinations, depression, and anxiousmoods such as sadness. The studyshowed overall that non-motor as-

pects of daily living, motor experi-ences of daily living, motor exami-nation symptoms and motor compli-cations did not show any impair-ment across time among the dance-trained PwPD group compared toPwPD who do not dance.

The study is the first of its kindto follow PwPD over a three-yearperiod during weekly dance partici-pation with music, providing addi-tional information regarding the na-ture of the progression of motor andnon-motor PD symptoms.

Hackers disrupt Iran's rail service withfake delay messages

Iran's railroad system cameunder cyberattack on Fri-day, a semi-official news

agency reported, with hackersposting fake messages abouttrain delays or cancellationson display boards at stationsacross the country.

The hackers posted mes-sages such as long delayed be-cause of cyberattack" or can-celed" on the boards. Theyalso urged passengers to callfor information, listing thephone number of the office ofthe country's supreme leader,Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

The semiofficial Farsnews agency reported that thehack led to unprecedented

chaos at rail stations. No grouptook responsibility. Earlier inthe day, Fars said trains acrossIran had lost their electronictracking system. It wasn't im-mediately clear if that was alsopart of the cyberattack.

Fars later removed its re-port and instead quoted thespokesman of the state railwaycompany, Sadegh Sekri, assaying the disruption did notcause any problem for trainservices. In 2019, an error inthe railway company's com-puter servers caused multipledelays in train services. In De-cember that year, Iran'stelecommunications ministrysaid the country had defused a

massive cyberattack on un-specified electronic infrastruc-ture but provided no specificson the purported attack.

It was not clear if the re-ported attack caused any dam-age or disruptions in Iran'scomputer and internet sys-tems, and whether it was thelatest chapter in the U.S. andIran's cyber operations target-ing the other. Iran disconnect-ed much of its infrastructurefrom the internet after theStuxnet computer virus widelybelieved to be a joint US-Is-raeli creation disrupted thou-sands of Iranian centrifuges inthe country's nuclear sites inthe late 2000s

All humans are equal, but some are less equal thanothers. Women, as usual, have drawn the shortstraw. A study by the Center for Global Develop-

ment found that globally, women took on 173 addition-al hours of unpaid childcare last year, compared to 59additional hours for men. The gap widened in low- andmiddle-income countries, where women cared for chil-dren three times as much as men did. As the pandemicisolated people at home, limiting access to care arrange-ments and social support networks, it ended up increas-ing the share of women’s care work. The division oflabour was skewed in other ways too. When it came totricky decisions about which partner keeps the paid joband who quits to provide the unpaid care needed athome, women mostly lost out since they are paid lesserand have lower job security than men. Relevant datapaint a grim picture. Earlier this year, research by theAzim Premji University revealed that in India, womenwere seven times more likely than men to lose their jobsduring the lockdown and 11 times more unlikely thanmen to return to work thereafter. Even those who havebroken the glass ceiling were left broken. Women hav-ing to juggle professional demands with housework, anindependent study found, either fall seriously ill or un-derperform. There is a line of thought that says that oneway out of the conundrum would be to compensate do-mestic labour. But even this kind of affirmative inter-vention could create a new set of challenges. Householdsheaded by men, be it the husband or the father-in-law,are likely to view the woman as a paid employee, deep-ening the sense of entitlement that Indian men alreadyharbour towards women and their labour. Remunerationfor household work could put men off even further fromsharing domestic responsibilities since — given the tox-ic nature of patriarchal sensibilities — women would beentitled to receive payment. This might lead to the cre-ation of a culture where women choose or are coerced toshun employment outside the home. Recently, the Cen-tre announced that male government employees who aresingle parents may take paid childcare leave of up to twoyears to take care of a minor child. This policy is wel-come, but why should it preclude other fathers? Is thatbecause domestic responsibilities, especially childcare, are intrinsically linked to primitive, gendered notionsconcerning the nature of labour? Policy must also coverother kinds of ground because the care economy, a fledg-ling area, needs imagination and meaningful support inthe time of a pandemic.

Hard work,harder lives

The Lotos-eaters"Courage!" he said, and pointed toward theland,"This mounting wave will roll us shorewardsoon."In the afternoon they came unto a landIn which it seemed always afternoon. All round the coast the languid air didswoon,Breathing like one thathath a weary dream.Full-faced above the val-ley stood the moon; And like a downwardsmoke, the slenderstreamAlong the cliff to fall andpause and fall did seem.A land of streams! some, like a downwardsmoke,Slow-dropping veils of thinnest lawn, didgo; And some thro' wavering lights and shad-ows broke,Rolling a slumbrous sheet of foam below.

DUBLIN: Ireland wicket-keeper batsman Neil Rock has been tested positive for COVID-19 ahead of the South Africa series. South Africa and Ireland are slated to lock horns in three ODIs and as many T20Is. The first ODI will be played on Sunday in Dublin. Stephen Doheny has been called up as a replacement for Rock. "Team management was informed of the positive result today, and Rock has been isolated from the squad as he awaits a follow-up test at the team hotel," Cricket Ireland said in a statement. "Doheny, meanwhile, will undergo a COVID test this afternoon and - given a negative outcome - will join the squad tomorrow," it added."Due to our biosecurity measures and contact tracing, we are satisfied that we do not have any genuine close contact cases and this should therefore have minimal impact on the squad," said Mark Rausa, Head of Sport Science, Physiotherapy and Medical Services for Cricket Ireland. "However, out of an abundance of caution due to the proximity of the series start, we will test one player and one staff member who had confirmed they spent a short amount of time with Neil with correct COViD safe precautions in place. We expect them to test negative and re-join the squad tomorrow," Rausa added.

LONDON: Hasan Ali collected his fourth five-wicket haul but his sublime efforts went in vain following a below-par top-order batting display by Pakistan as England registered a 52-run win in the second ODI on Saturday.England have now gained an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series following their nine-wicket victory in the first match played in Cardiff on Thursday.Chasing 248, Pakistan got off to a bad start and the side lost four wickets with just 53 runs on the board. Imam-ul-Haq (1), Babar Azam (19), Fakhar Zaman (10), and Mohammad Rizwan (5) were all sent back cheaply and Pakistan was left in a spot of bother.Saud Shakeel and Sohaib Maqsood put on 33 runs for the fifth wicket, but as soon as Pakistan's innings started to come on track, Maqsood (19) lost his wicket to Craig Overton, reducing Pakistan to 86/5.Shadab Khan (21) and Faheem Ashraf (1) were also not able to stay at the crease for a long haul, and as a result, Pakistan was left staring down the barrel at 118/7 and the visitors still needed 130 runs for the win. The left-handed Saud fought a lone battle and ended up as a top-scorer with a gritty 56 (4x4), while Hasan Ali entertained an almost full house by clubbing three sixes and two fours in a 17-ball 31. Shadab Khan chipped in with a 20-ball 21 before Pakistan was folded for 195.

ZAGREB : Five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand registered a win over Russian Grandmaster Garry Kasparov in the Croatia Grand Chess Tour tournament on Saturday.Playing with white pieces, Anand defeated the 13th world champion in half an hour in the fourth round of the Blitz event. The Indian Grandmaster, however, faced a defeat at the hands of Ian Nepomniachtchi. The Russian had a slow start, with losses to Mamedyarov and MVL in rounds 11 and 13. By finishing with 4.5/5, Nepomniachtchi managed to keep his sole first place after all."I basically lost two normal positions with two big blunders, against Shakh and Maxime. So first of all, I tried to stop blundering and pull myself together. In general, I don't think I played too good, but it was enough to change the flow and score some wins," chess.com quoted Nepomniachtchi as saying.Earlier this week, Anand defeated Dutch Grandmaster Jorden van Foreest on his return to competitive chess.Former world champion Anand, who was playing his first over-the-board game in almost 17 months, started off with a win in round one of the Croatia Grand Chess Tour tournament. However, the Indian champion faced a defeat at the hands-off Frenchman Maxime Vachier-Lagrave in the second round before drawing with Ian Nepomniachtchi of Russia.

Brazil has World Cup hopes dented after lossRIO DE JANEIRO: Brazil trusted its defense even more than Neymar to keep its Copa America title. It was a move that failed. Argentina's 1-0 victory at the Maracana Stadium on Saturday proved that the Selecao's defensive prowess was not as strong as its players and coach have shown. Now coach Tite will have to rethink some of his alternatives, as he promised to use Copa America as a testing ground ahead of the World Cup in Qatar.Argentina's winner came in the 22nd minute after Rodrigo de Paul made a long pass to ngel di Maria. The 33-year-old veteran striker counted on poor defending by left-back Renan Lodi to take control and lob it past goalkeeper Ederson. Brazil had conceded only two goals in the tournament before the final. But Di Maria knew that Lodi could possbly be beaten."Before the match I told him (de Paul) that the left-back slept a little in the marking," the Argentinian striker said after the match. Brazil's most frequent starter in the position, Alex Sandro, was recovering from injury. But it wasn't only Lodi who made mistakes in Brazil's defense against Argentina. Veteran Thiago Silva and midfielder Casemiro, two of the steadiest players of the team, gave Argentina opportunities in the second half, some of them in unforced errors. Silva acknowledged Brazil was under par. "It was not the Brazil team it usually is in the first minutes. When you concede in a match like this, it is hard to come back," he said.
