Service Dogs UK is a unique charity that partners rescue dogs with mentally wounded individuals. The dogs help forces veterans and members of the emergency services cope with the effects of PTSD.

Mark is a former serviceman, and his dog, Jerry, now fully trained, helps him with the challenges of PTSD. “He’ll load the washing and unload it as well and make sure I hang it up, and he wakes me up from nightmares at night. I can’t really think where I’d be without him, but I know where I am with him.”

Co-founder of the charity, Royal Navy veteran, frontline Police Sergeant, and mental health champion, Garry Botterill, commented: “It’s great that the veterans are gaining independence. They are doing things they haven’t done before, they are re-integrating with society because the dogs act as a furry friendly barrier at times, and start a conversation.”

Benny, is a very special rescue doggy; the words that spring to mind with this glorious dog bottled sunshine, cheeky monkey, clever and perfect for his Army veteran Steve. Benny is currently in training to become an assistance dog. Steve really struggles with sleeping, due to his PTSD, most nights are interrupted with nightmares and it’s very difficult to get back to sleep. At Service Dogs UK we train our dogs to interrupt nightmares, to wake our clients in time so as to allow the veteran to be able to “shake off” the nightmare and allow them to fall back to sleep again. In part we train the dog to lick the face for example. Sometimes however a veteran can be so in the throws of the nightmare that this doesn’t help, as figured out by Benny recently. Benny, using his own clever and resourceful brain came up with alternative solution… he nibbled Steve’s toes and Steve woke up from his nightmare. You can watch our furry friends in this moving report at http://forces.net/radio/homeless-hounds-improving-lives-veterans. You can help by making a donation here: https://www.justgiving.com/servicedogs-uk

If you are being drafted to a different area or have a course to attend over 6 months in length, then you are entitled to keep your quarter if it is in a Base Port Area (Portsmouth, Plymouth, Faslane) ….. However you do need to notify housing of this!

To do this you need to complete an e1132 form on the DIO system, requesting to retain the quarter, and in the notes state that you are requesting retention of quarter under the base port agreement. You will then be emailed confirmation of retention, which normally lasts for 1 year from the date of the start of your draft. If you have any questions regarding the process then please contact me and I will help you.

In the early hours of the morning on the campus of an American college, Martha, much to her husband George’s displeasure, has invited the new professor and his wife to their home for some after-party drinks. As the alcohol flows and dawn approaches, the young couple are drawn into George and Martha’s toxic games until the evening reaches its climax in a moment of devastating truth-telling.

Are you going on draft to a different port area or going on course for

over six months?

The Defence Infrastructure Organisation has initiated a long-term project to sub-let empty Service homes that are not currently required. As well as the normal management margin required to ensure properties are available for families where we have sufficient homes, the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) has retained some additional properties until the future needs of Defence are fully known.

This approach gives us flexibility to manage the requirements of the Front Line Commands, however, empty properties do no generate any income, and instead draw revenue away that could otherwise be invested elsewhere in the estate. The needs of Service personnel and their families has been considered throughout this project, therefore entitled and eligible Service personnel continue to take priority for SFA and should apply for accommodation as they normally would.

Where there is no requirement from Service families, empty properties will be considered on a site by site basis in consultation with local commanders, for sub-let to private tenants – who will be subject to credit and reference checks. This will be on a short term arrangement, so we could return homes back to MOD control if a requirement emerges. Overall, our planning has been to implement this project without disadvantaging Service personnel, whilst maximising revenue from rental receipts from empty properties that are currently not required.

Total Warrior, the pinnacle of obstacle course racing in the UK, has agreed a new charity partnership with Royal Caledonian Education Trust, Scotland’s armed forces children’s charity.

The extreme event, which promises participants “30 punishing obstacles and one free beer” is returning to Balgone Estate in East Lothian on 16th and 17th September for its third annual Scottish event. This year, the event will work alongside four official charity partners, each of which will aim to raise several thousand pounds for their respective causes.

Based in Edinburgh, the Royal Caledonian Education Trust (RCET) provides vital grant funding to children from veteran and armed forces families who are struggling to make ends meet, or living with mental health issues, ill health and disability. The grants help to cover the cost of school clothing, after-school activities, and school trips. The charity also provides educational resources and training to help teachers and other professionals recognise and support children and young people experiencing difficulties in school - particularly due to frequent mobility and during times when a parent is deployed away from home.

The partnership announced today will see at least 50 RCET fundraisers take on Total Warrior’s physical and mental challenge of 30 obstacles – including fire, ice, electricity, and mountains of mud – over a 10km course. Matthew Middler, fundraising manager for RCET, said: “Having a parent in the Armed Forces can be really tough for some children. Forces kids may go to more than four or five schools due to relocation of a serving parent, sometimes to different countries. Making new friends and keeping on top of school work can be tough. For others it can be hard putting on a brave face whilst worrying about mum or dad on deployment.

“At RCET, we support hundreds of children each year and reach hundreds more through research, training and support materials. If you believe no child should be at a disadvantage because their parent has served our country, then come and take on Total Warrior in aid of RCET and help us to help them.” More than 4,500 participants are expected to descend upon North Berwick this year, raising tens of thousands of pounds for a range of charities. For the first time, this year’s event will feature a ‘Junior Warrior’ course designed specifically for primary school-aged children, as well as an ‘Ultra Warrior’ endurance challenge, where participants will attempt to complete as many 10km laps of the course as they can within a five hour time limit.

David Gaffney, race director for Total Warrior, said: “We’re delighted to be working with RCET for the first time this year and look forward to helping them raise as much money as possible for what is a very worthy cause. 2017 is shaping up to be our most effective year for charitable giving yet and we’ll be announcing more charity partners within the next few weeks.” If you’d like to take on Total Warrior and help raise vital funds for the RCET, please visit www.rcet.org.uk for more information.
