eCall is a European initiative intended to bring rapid assistance to motorists involved in a collision anywhere in the European Union. eCall was made mandatory in all new cars sold within the EU as of March 31, 2018. In the event of a serious road accident, an emer-gency call (E112) is manually or automatically initiated from a ve-hicle to an emergency agency, and supplemented by sending a minimum set of data (MSD) carrying relevant vehicle and position information.

Keep in mind that cars typically last around 15 years (compared to 2 years for mobile phones). The issue of how in-band modem eCall deployments in cars will continue to be supported as network technology migrates to IMS needs to be considered.
