Safety and Security
RAD offers systems according to customer Safety and Security requirements.
Increasing need for safe and secure systems.
Generally a top down engineering approach.
Continuous challenge during a product’s life cycle.
There is no 100% solution.

Some Experiences
Safety and Security…
– requirements are very high level at the beginning of a project.– are very customer dependent.– get more complex with increasing 3rd party workshare/subsystems.– have to be treated as system features.– pose a risk to most projects.– professionals are hardly available.– …
…must be integrated in the System Engineering Process.

Security, Safety and Systems
Safety and Security are today handled largely separately from each other. Exploiting the combined vulnerabilities offers maximum probability of success.
System Engineering shall consider combined Safety and Security.
Safety aims to protect the system against unintentional actions. Security aims to protect the system against intentional actions.
System Engineering shall give system integrity priority over intention.
Combined Safety and Security protection may add additional complexity. A system is assumed to have fewer vulnerabilities than the sum of Safety
hazards and Security threats.System Engineering shall identify, analyze and control vulnerabilities.

Summary
Rheinmetall Air Defence offers products ranging from conventional military air defence applications to systems specially designed for protecting high-value civilian assets – both on land and at sea.
The System Engineering department develops, manages and maintains these systems. System Engineers contribute with their specialized skills to this effort.
With ever increasing system complexity, IT security and safety require high System Engineering attention, not only separately but also integrated combined.
An integrated approach requires the analysis of system vulnerabilities- rather than threats- and the implementation of protection and control means.
