Alright guys,

I hope all of you are doing well and not stressing too much about your upcoming exams (if not, just check our survival tips!)

It’s been a very busy and exciting month here at + refuel. We’ve made a few changes in our editorial team and most importantly, we listened to what you had to say. Lots of you took part in our survey, giving us a better idea of what you want to read and how you want the magazine to look.

This issue was written with two things in mind: summer and fun! You’ll find quite a few ideas to keep you busy during your uni-free months as well as our selection of new albums and new films we believe you should definitely check out!

And because it’s summer and everyone is starting to get obsessed with that “beach body”, we also have a few exercise you can do around your house without having to drag yourself to the gym.

Finally, last but certainly not least, this year for the first time ever at UEL, we have a Summer Ball! It is going to be a memorable event with great acts such as Pendulum and Jameela Jamil as well as glow circus perfomers and it’s being held at the fantastic venue that is the Troxi. What are you waiting for then? Go get your ticket! It’s definite must-go-to event and the best way to finish off your year with a bang!

This is it from us for this year but we will be back in Sep-tember so don’t forget to pick us up!

Have an amazing summer!

Marion

Meet the Society

Lots of you come to the Students’ Union looking for more info about societies and so, with that in mind, we decided that each issue of Refuel will shine a light on one of the many societies we have here at UELSU. And with exams fast approaching, what best society to meet than The Cool Nerds!

The Cool Nerds Society is currently a silver award society at UEL .The Basics of what we do is providing academic help for students and by students. We created a system where members tutor other members on areas of difficulty on their course of study. The way it works is that we have at least 2 course tutors for each course/ programmes our members are on which is why no matter the programme you’re on, everyone is welcome to be a cool nerd. Mind you, We are not just about the academics, we also organise other events such as movie nights, get togethers and end of semester parties.

6

We have an executive committee which consists of a president, a secretary, a treasurer, one press secretary, a publicity officer, 2 event managers, our course tutors and more recently, we’re intro-ducing vice president positions, so if u feel you’re up for it, come nominate yourself at our next committee election. The committee members make executive decisions such as events to plan for our members, new features to add to our societies, etc.

The cool nerds have grown to evolve over time, helping out fellow students by coming togeth-er to organise tutorial session, revision session and discussions on matters of interest with the goal of improving student interactions and integration. We have had a lot of members with signifi-cant increase in their grades due to the tutorial and revision sessions .When we first started in May 2012 we only had 50 members but that number tripled during fresher’s week in September 2012. We were so glad that so many people were eager to be part of the society. Currently we have about 200 + members and increasing.

We know one society can’t do it all alone, which is why we collaborate with other societies to organise events and such. Last year, we organised a Christmas party with the UEL RAG society (UEL Fundraising Society) and we’re currently planning an end of the semester party with the UEL psychology society. Look out for more details.

To be a member, all you have to do is register online at the Uelsu website or go to the student union reception on any of the campuses to register. It’s only a £1 registration fee to be a member. If you want to know more about the society, you can email us at [email protected] or follow us on twitter @UEL cool nerds soc. You can also like us on Facebook: www.facebook.com/dacoolnerds or contact the society president directly at [email protected].

by Damilola Arulogun

7

How many societies do we have now?

We currently have 88 societies at Uelsu! It is very easy to set up a society and if you do then you get access to room booking, printing, training and advice so I definitely recommend students get involved. Also there are some really good societies already set up that have proven themselves and therefore can get access to grants. These are the silver and gold societies so those are worth joining.

You seem to really enjoy what you do, what would you say is the best thing about your job?

The absolute best thing is meeting so many enthusiastic students. They are on campus setting up events and societies because they genuinely enjoy doing it, there’s nothing in it for them and see-ing that is awesome!

What can we expect in the future?

There is going to be a brand new SU website soon which is going to look brilliant and have a lot of good features for societies. We also have a huge fresher’s this year in Sports Dock which will get the societies involved so that is the best way to check them out, that or the SU website.

What is the best way for students to contact you Miles?

Well if you would like to have a quick chat you could always pop into the students union and ask for me, if I’m available I will be happy to do so, otherwise contact me via email or phone.

Exam Survival TipsDon’t worry! (be happy)

Before you say anything, I know it’s

easier said than done BUT think for

just a moment. When did worrying ever

help? Exactly!

#1

#2

Don’t bother with performance enhancers. Most of the time, all they’ll do is leave you out of pocket. If you need an energy boost, just have a cup of coffee.

#3

Know how and when you work best.

If you’re not a morning person, don’t

force yourself to be up at 6am

to revise. It will only be counter-

-productive and you’ll end up

looking at cute cats on Facebook.

The exam season is upon us again. Here are a few tips to make sure you’re at your best.

Exam Survival Tips

If you’re not a morning person, don’t

looking at cute cats on Facebook.

#4

Eat well

#5

Relax !

I know that when you’re revisingit’s easier to have pizza, burgers and

crisp. I’ve been there but trust me whenI say, an apple and some water goes aa long way.

Revising is tiring and stressful.Allow yourself to take a break.Obviously not every 5 minutes butevery few hours, go for a bit of freshair.

On the day

Have breakfast. If you don’t feel like it,

bring a snack. You’ll be thankful later.

Bring several pens, just in case.

Go to the loo before going in.

Don’t panic, everything will be fine!

John Lock

SM: The league table position is important when students are selecting a university. Has this always been the case? John: I am not an expert on this however, you are better off getting detailed analysis from the experts. League tables, of one sort or another, have existed for a long time. Like all tables, somebody has criteria which advantages some and disadvantages others. You have to put league tables into perspective in higher education – UEL is better than other institutions we have good teaching staff for example the Dean of the Business School was educated at Harvard and the Vice Chancellor at Glasgow.

Something New

try it, you might like it!So we all know working out can be time-consuming and seriously lacking in the fun department. However, with summer coming up everyone’s freaking out about getting that beach body. Well this one’s dedicated to working towards that washboard look.*

It’s probably doubtful that you will be changing your diet of junk, junk and more junk just because +Refuel says so, but maybe when you’re watching that episode of Game of Thrones while lying around in last night’s clothes you might consider using your time more wisely.

I aimed to ‘work out’ every day for a week to see if I could not feel the beginning of an asthma at-tack when walking from NBG.01 to NB1.01. All you need is a number of jazzy things around your room, a pair of trainers and some keen determination.

Have a look at what I did and have a go. You could be on your way to confidently wearing that teeny-weeny swimsuit in Ibiza, Cos, Napa… wherever you trendy lot venture. Go on, try it, you might like it…

try it, you might like it!

MondayOverhead squats – grab a rolled up towel and hold it over your head, in line with your shoulders. Feet

hip width apart and squat down as far as possible without letting your knees jut out past your toes.

Return to standing. That’s one rep. Do 10!Airplane/Superman extentions - Lie facedown and extend your arms out at shoulder height, keeping

your elbows slightly bent. Press your shoulder blades together and lift your arms, torso, and legs off

the floor. Holding that position, bring your arms in front of you (C), hold for one count, and then move

them back. Lower yourself to the floor. That’s one rep. Do 10 to 15

That’s enough for today I think I deserve a biscuit.

TuesdayToday I wanted the wind in my hair and the air in my lungs. Having said this,

all I had to work with was the Docklands dockside. I stretched out quickly

and jogged moderately for 20 minutes listening to the sweet sounds of REO

Speedwagon. I can’t fight this feeling anymore, I feel great and I’m after a

well-deserved glass of tap water? Yeah maybe tomorrow, I’m having wine!

WednesdaySo when I was younger, thinner and less lazy, I would knock out this core routine out after every session

and it made me sad momentarily until I started feeling like I could bounce a penny off my tummy. Do 10 of

each!Russian twists – sit on the floor, and lift your legs, with a bent knee and cross them. Holding a tin of some-

thing weighty, move your arms from one side of your body to the other.

Toe touches – lie on your back and lift your legs up so you they are above you. With your arms in front of

you, lift your shoulders off the floor and aim to touch your toes. Don’t strain your neck on this one!

Bicycle crunches – like a normal crunch but with your hands behind your ears and your feet at 90 degrees

alternate bringing your right elbow to your left knee.

ThursdayWho am I kidding, I walked from Stratford campus to my car in Upton

Park. Not exactly keen dedication but I didn’t buy an ice cream from any

of the corner shops on the way.

FridayAnybody else own a paperweight? I do, although when I bought it it was

called a kettlebell. I YouTube’d some exercises and worked on them for 20

minutes. Fun? Eh. Painful? You bet.

What’s the verdict?Well I know my not-so-motivated weekly routine didn’t go as planned but surprisingly I do feel better for it.

Just knowing that I didn’t waste an hour of my life watching The Real Housewives of Atlanta made a whole lot

of difference to my wellbeing. I’m not saying that every day is going to be painfully achy workout day, but I

think I will walk the 10 minutes down the road to the shop instead of taking the car. Exercise – 1; Laziness – 0

Music

Jawdz F. Star

Jawdz F. Star is a 22 year old artist from South London who has been rapping for 9 years and taking it seriously since he was 20. Refuel had a quick chat with him to see what he’s been up to lately...

by Stacy Hall

ur Playlist Your Playlist Your Playlist Your Playlist Your Playlist

S: You started making music at age 13, that’s quite young what was your inspiration to start from such a young age?My friends, I was listening to my friends rap from quite an early age about a variety of dif-ferent subjects and that kind of inspired me to take it up myself and really start working on something more meaningful to be the best that I can.

S: What were your musical influences grow-ing up?Michael Jackson was one of my major influ-ences. I was listening to him before I was even listening to rap music! I was listening to pop so that definitely influenced my music now.

S: Do you come from a musical background?I’ve always been involved in music one way or another. When I was around 10 I started playing the piano, I don’t play anymore and in a way I regret stopping but playing the piano and be-ing able to read music a little bit helped me to evolve into a producer. Nowadays I’m more of a play it by ear musician so I can work out a beat by listening to it instead.S: So who are your more recent influences?

There’s a lot. I mean, if I had to name the artists I am listening to right now I guess it would be Kendrick Lamar, Drake and Jay Z

S: You have a new single out ‘5am’ How was it filming the video?I had a good time filming that one, it was a quick set up, we filmed each part about 7 times. There are three main scenes; my home, Water-loo near St. Thomas’ Hospital and Oxford Street. The video is based on how I think and feel at 5am… my experiences you know. So it’s a mix-ture of that and current situations.

S: Where do you see yourself in three years time?Hopefully I will be signed to a label that will respect what I want to do with my music and making money from my music instead of just doing a lot of free promotional work. I also hope to have built a strong team to have beside me.

Exhibitions you should go to

David Bowie Retrospective ExhibitionV&A Museum until 28 july 2013 - FREEThe exhibition brings together more than 300 objects for the first time, includ-ing handwritten lyrics, spectacular costumes, photography, film, music videos and Bowie’s own instruments. The show charts the star’s life from his humble beginnings as an unknown Brixton man called David Jones, to the rise and fall of Ziggy Stardust, the persona adopted by the musician in the 1970s, and then to Bowie’s dramatic comeback in the 1980s.

Man Ray PortraitNational Portrait Gallery until 27 May 2013 - from £12.70This major photographic exhibition is devoted to Man Ray, one of the most innovative and influential artists of his generation.Featuring more than 150 vintage prints from Man Ray’s career in America and Paris, taken between 1916 and 1968, this is the first major retrospective of the artist’s photographic portraits. The exhibition includes studies of Catherine Deneuve, Ava Gardner, Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali and many more.

EstuaryMuseum of London Docklands from 17 May 2013 - FREEEstuary brings together the work of 12 artists who have been inspired by the

outer limits of the Thames where the river becomes the sea. The exhibition marks the 10th anniversary of the Museum of London Docklands, a converted Georgian warehouse on West India Quay. With its dramatic landscape – desolate mudflats and saltmarshes, vast open skies, container ports, power stations and seaside resorts – the Estuary has long been a rich source of inspiration for artists and writers. Through film, photography, painting and print-making, the contemporary artists featured in this exhibition offer

new insight into this often overlooked, yet utterly compelling, environment and the people that live and work there.

UEL Cricket Team goes to India

Forward Letter from David Cosford – Director of Sport

As the Director of Sport at University of East London it gives me great pleasure to introduce and support a team of our students and cricket players to India. We are here as Sporting Ambassadors of UEL, with the objective to create new partnerships, relationships and friendships through the wonderful game of cricket.

As a University we aim to become the Best University for Sport in London by 2015, and our sports programmes offer some of the finest opportunities to students than any other University in the UK. Sport is central to student life at UEL, and we offer over 25 sports per week from beginner to elite levels. Students at UEL benefit from a great social and competitive environment, with many long term friendships being formed for a lifetime. UEL is an extremely diverse and inclusive University, with many students from India and indeed other Countries contributing to our sports programme, especially in cricket.

Our cricket team have been very successful having reached the recent semi finals of the University Indoor Championships. We have a good blend of first class talent as well as students who wish to participate, improve and enjoy the game generally.

Thank you for welcoming us to India, and may our relationship in the future flourish.
