About the composer

-1910-1992

-His family referred to him as ‘Bill or Billy’

-American composer, teacher, and administrator

-Attended the School of Commerce of New York University for two years before quitting and started the private study of counterpoint… and later attended Juilliard.

-Billy won many composition contests and guest conducted several bands.

-In 1962 Schuman was made president of the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. This gave him the opportunity to take control and start many new programs. 1

- Uses English songs and folk dances

- The folk song Swansea Town is the BIG euphonium solo.

“Oh! Farewell to you, my Nancy, ten thousand times adieu, I'm bound to cross the ocean, girl, once more to part with you;

Once more to part from you, fine girl, you're the girl that I adore, But still I live in hopes to see old Swansea Town once more.”

- The other two excerpts are based on the Dargason from the 16th century and Elizabethan love song Green Sleaves. 1
