BUG BITES AND BREATHING
Summer means cook-outs atthe shore. Picnics in grassyparks. And plenty of pests. Beesants, and yellow jackets.
Insects can be a pain, liter-ally. Their b i t e s can causewheezing, nausea, dizziness,even comas. Sometimes t h e i rstings are fatal.
Treatment for reactions toinsect bites should be prompt.Especially when severe reactionsdevelop hours after the sting. That can spell serious trouble.
At a meeting of the AmericanAcademy of Allergy, Dr. JamesH. Barnard said that delayed r e -actions are more likely to go un-treated. In his study of 50 fatali-ties from insect bites, more thanhalf received no treatment at all.And as many as 14 percent show-ed no reaction to the sting until24 hours later — or more.
Severe reactions to insectstings often involve the respir-atory tract. Some obstructionoccurs, and breathing is imped-ed. Fluids — in e x c e s s i v eamounts —fill tissue spaces. Andblood vessels can c o l l a p s e .Severe reactions can hit peoplewho have been stung earlier bythe same insects with no illeffects. But not all severe r e -actions result in death, by anymeans.
If people know they are sen-sitive to certain insects, theyshould consult their doctor. Doc-tors should be called, immediate-ly, when severe reactions dohappen.
In some cases, doctors traininsect-sensitive patients to givethemselves injections, usuallyepinephrine, in anticipation ofemergencies. In the study con-ducted by Dr. Barnard, for ex-ample, several persons actuallydied during the long wait for anambulance. An immediate inject-ion might have averted the ca-tastrophe.
For information about aller-gies and many kinds of respira-tory disorders, see your localtuberculosis and respiratorydisease association. It's a matterof life and breath.

Sanibel Island, world famousshell collectors paradise, is inthe Gulf of Mexico—off thetropical Southwest Coast ofFlorida. Only a morning'sdrive from Miami. A new 3J4mile Toll Bridge and Cause-way connects it to the main-land.
Easily accessible yet pleas-antly remote from the paceand pressure of urban life. Here, noise, traffic, parking, pollution, and crowds becomea distant memory. Yet all thecomforts and amenities mod-em life demands are availableon Sanibel and the thrivingcity of Fort Myers.
The concept of Sunset SouthCondominium Club is incom-plete keeping with its low-keyed tropical island setting.I t is no* just another sprawl-ing and impersonal high-risecliff-dweller.
These are spacious 2 bedroom2 bathroom garden-type apart-ments with just 4 units to abuilding. AJ1 with a stunningview of the Gulf. Our masterplan of only 14 buildings willlimit occupancy to a selectfew. 7 already under con-struction.
The club concept is supportedby such realities as a privatefresh-water swimming pool, cabanas, putting green plusyour own exclusive SunsetSouth Club House. The pro-posed new Country Club andGolf Course will be on oneside. And the sparkling whitesandy beach of the Gulf ofMexico on the other.
The ultimate in serene andgracious living? We think so.You will too, if you visit themodel apartment next to theSanibel Chamber of Com-merce. Then go see the site.I t sells itself!
