I recently had the pleasure of attending my first Association of Art Museum Directors meeting in San Francisco. As we discussed the importance of excellent museum practices, the impact we strive to make in our communities, and the ways in which we aim to inspire our audiences, a recurring theme emerged: relevancy. As art museum directors, we strive to foster essential cultural organizations that attract the broadest possible public to engage with art and culture from the past and present. We examined and discussed the role of the art museum as a cultural forum—a safe place for difficult ideas—and a place where we can try on new and different ways of seeing the world.

With relevancy in mind, the UMFA will take an exciting leap this summer! Speed: The Art of the Performance Automobile is an exhibition that will mark an unusual departure for the UMFA—an exploration of history and design through material culture. The exhibition comprises nineteen of the world’s finest race cars, and the experience is sure to be one of a kind. Speed will also provide visitors with an opportunity to learn more about Utah’s Bonneville Salt Flats and its important contributions to racing history. In keeping with the goal of relevancy and diversity, the UMFA hopes to attract thousands of art lovers and automobile enthusiasts alike with Speed. As members, we hope you will join us to explore and celebrate the art of the automobile and enjoy this “out-of-the-box” exhibition event.

I hope to see you in the galleries soon.

Gretchen Dietrich, Executive Director

The Future of Spiral Jetty: Community and Collaboration

We are pleased to announce that in January 2012, the UMFA was selected as one of two local organizations to work in partnership with Dia Art Foundation for the long-term preservation and stewardship of Robert Smithson’s iconic artwork, Spiral Jetty (1970). Dia, a New York-based arts organization and museum, acquired the piece as a gift from the artist’s estate in 1999. The UMFA will work togeth-er with Dia and the Great Salt Lake Institute at Westminster College to ensure its preservation, raise public awareness of the sculpture, and promote education about the artwork and Robert Smithson’s legacy in Utah.

Made of black basalt rocks from the site and located in our very own Great Salt Lake, Spiral Jetty has been considered a profoundly important artwork since its creation in 1970. The fifteen-foot-wide coil stretches out into the lake not far from the Golden Spike National Monument, and is visited by thousands of art lovers from around the world each year. Whether you are a huge fan of the Jetty or think it nothing more than a pile of rocks, there is no arguing the fact that Spiral Jetty puts Utah on the art map of the world.

Visit www.spiraljetty.org or www.umfa.utah.edu/spiraljettystewardship for more information.

Photographers have long been inspired by the automobile and the multi-faceted ideas it has come to represent. Symbolizing such dichotomous concepts as masculinity and femininity, speed and leisure, and the individual and the collective, the automobile lends itself to many different interpretations. This group of photographs from the UMFA’s collection delineates the diversity of ways in which artists have depicted and interpreted the omnipresent automobile.

Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteers are one of the UMFA’s most vital resources, and while we expect Speed: The Art of the Performance Automobile to be a spectacular exhibition, it won’t be complete without your support. We are recruiting volunteer Speed Guides to share their love, enthusiasm, and knowledge of the automobile with our visitors. Each Speed Guide will be required to attend two training sessions at the UMFA and will be asked to spend as much time as they wish in the exhibition, casually interacting with visitors. Schedules will be flexible, and Guides will not be required to give formal tours of Speed.

If you are interested in becoming a Speed Guide, please contact Amy at [email protected] or by phone at 801.585.9875. Applications are due May 1.

2011 Young Benefactors Acquisition Dinner

Friday, November 4, 2011 marked a much-anticipated annual event at the UMFA—the Young Benefactors Acquisition Dinner. On that evening, the Young Benefactors, an innovative donor group of modern and contemporary art lovers, gathered and voted to acquire a new piece of artwork for the Museum’s collection. The winning nomination was Utah-based artist Jann Haworth’s Charm Bracelet, an incredible nine-foot sculptural piece originally created in 1964.

Haworth is a pioneer of soft and stuffed sculpture, and her Charm Bracelet effortlessly explores the social rhetoric surrounding feminine traditions. As one of the only women recognized for her contribution to Pop Art, Haworth is best known for her creation of the album cover of the Beatles’ Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. Haworth’s Charm Bracelet has become a permanent part of the UMFA’s collection of modern and contemporary art and will be enjoyed by Salt Lake City residents and visitors for generations to come. Thank you, Young Benefactors!

To join the Young Benefactors, visit www.umfa.utah.edu/yb.
