Superior Knitting Mills - Sekem Street North Perth WA - Est. 1923 .

The machine that started it allIn 1894 Rebecca Dawes, a skilled knitting operative, emigrated from the UK bringing a hand- operated knitting machine (pictured). Subsequently, the machine was used mainly for domestic purposes and then to produce socks for the Armed Forces in WWI.

After the war, the family decided to put the machine to commercial use and set up in a garage in Carnation Street, North Perth, knitting woollen socks and gloves; establishing Superior Knitting Mills - the name SEKEM evolved from the original name, using the S K M with two e’s. Initially, the business was run as a partnership between the Dawes and Lazenby families (relatives of George Lazenby of 007 fame!)

POST WAR GROWTH AND NEW OPPORTUNITIES[ Superior Knit - Perfect Fit ]

Sewing rib bands & over-locking 1954.

The 1950’s to the 1970’s were very successful for Sekem and thousands of garments were exported to the Eastern States. At one stage, over 300 different garment styles were offered.

Over 600 schools and vast numbers of sporting teams chose Sekem for their garments. As Australia’s market leaders in football guernseys throughout the post war period, the company was well positioned to tender for the coveted VFL License and indeed, in 1983, Sekem was awarded the VFL License alongside its WAFL and SANFL Licenses.

In 1984, after 61 years of ownership by the Dawes family, the business was sold by brothers Peter and Bob Dawes, to the McIntyre family who amalgamated the business with the other WA iconic brand Burley, forming today’s Burley Sekem Pty Ltd.

The McIntyre family ran the business successfully until 1996 when a management buyout took place; the corporate structure is still in place today.

In the 1950’s, with peacetime production again possible, the business forged ahead with the acquisition of fully automatic programmed knitting machines from Germany. School jumpers were added to the knitwear range and staff numbers increased to 60.

In 1954 factory space doubled and Carnation Street was renamed Sekem Street.

SEKEM STRIDES INTO A NEW CENTURY[ Quality Sporting Apparel Since 1923 ]

At the turn of the twentieth century, Burley Sekem diversifi ed into supporter merchandise winning licenses with most major sporting organisations such as NRL, ARU, FFA, Super Rugby, Australian Open and State of Origin. Throughout thisperiod, the AFL and WAFL have been key commercial partners.

The business has weathered many challenges during its 90+ years, surviving WWII, major industry changes such as woollen to synthetic fibres, knitted fabrics to sublimation, and local production to largely offshore.

With such a long and successful history, there is immense pride amongst Sekem’s staff and tremendous determination to continue and develop the brand for the next generation in a responsible and sustainable fashion. In more recent times we are delighted to have such a respected football identity as Matt Priddis, choosing Sekem as a Brand Ambassador.

Matt will be assisting Sekem in its key relationships and also providing input into general design and fit of our elite range of products. It’s a natural partnership with Burley Sekem, as Matt’s core values demonstrated during his illustrious career, mirror those of Burley Sekem.

Most sporting garments today are produced using sublimation printing. The process involves applying pressure from a paper print onto fabric under high temperature.

The ink becomes gaseous and transfers onto the fabric, allowing for high definition and accurate colour matching.

If you have a concept in mind, our graphic department can make design recommendations.

EmbroideryPopular on knitted and cut & sew garments, embroidery gives a high quality traditional look, however does have some limitations with highly detailed logos.

Embroidery can be applied directly to garments in most cases or as sewn on embroidered badges.

AppliquéAn alternative to embroidery are woven badges which are either sewn or adhered to the fabric. Heat transfered logos and images can also be applied to the fabric. These methods allow for highly detailed branding.

NumbersNumbers can either be sublimated onto the garment as part of the design or pressed on as heat transfers.

ArtworkAll club/sponsor logos are required in ‘vector’ format or a high resolution ‘bitmap’ file.

Digital images are typically created in one of 2 basic file types:-

Bitmap (left) - is an image composed of pixels as in digital photographs or scans. The quality of these file types is dependant on the size and resolution set when created. If a bitmap image is enlarged beyond it’s original size, pixelisation, jaggy edges, will be obvious. Typical bitmap image fi le types - PSD, TIFF, JPEG, PNG & PDF (can also be vector)

Vector (right) - is an image or, in fact, a drawing, composed of lines or ‘paths’ which are editable in a computer aided drawing (CAD) program. A vector image can be used at any size and remain crisp and sharp. Specific colours are also often embedded in vector art.Typical vector image fi le types - EPS, AI, SVG & PDF (can also be bitmap).

SizingSizing is one of the most important elements of being a successful apparel brand and is an example of where Sekem’s long history is a great advantage. We take great care to ensure that our sizing is consistent and are happy to loan ‘sizing sets’ to ensure customer expectations are met.

Across a wide variety of garments it can be overwhelming to be met with detailed spreadsheets. Moreover, there are many different patterns used for a wide range of garments from Elite professional sportsman to more casual weekend players.

Accordingly, we provide guidelines which will assist in determining the appropriate range of sizes for any club or school.

What information does Sekem need to confirm an order?• Delivery address and contact name (Please note: We are unable to deliver to a PO Box)

• Billing details (If different to the above)

• Date goods required

• Garments required (stating design and colour preferences)

• Quantities required per garment design and size

• Numbering information (if required)

• All logos to be submitted in .eps or .ai files

Does Sekem have minimum quantity orders?Yes, minimum order quantities do apply however, for a surcharge, we can accommodate smaller quantities.

Does Sekem have sizing specifications?Yes, generally speaking Sekem sizing errs on the generous side. As our sizing apparel patterns are unique to Sekem, and have been refined over many years, these can be emailed upon request.

To assist, in most cases Sekem can lend a set of sizing samples to ensure your requirements are met.

Can I see a sample?Yes, samples can be sent out upon request.

What is the difference between “sublimation” and “cut and sew” garments?Sublimation is a printing process whereby designs are transferred from paper onto fabric under pressure and heat. It enables incredible detail and complexity and almost any design is possible.

Cut and sew involves using dyed fabrics in panels, often complimented by piping or mesh panels. Generally logos are either embroidered or screen printed on. The production time for cut and sew is generally longer.

Is it possible to match colours exactly?Whilst great care is taken to match colours and instructions, it is a fact that colour shades vary across different fabrics and knits. We require all custom made orders to have artwork sheets signed off by the customer. The sheets will have all the colour details and logo specs.

This is an area where our experience comes into play and our teamwear staff will be able to advise if we have any concerns.

For garments we require either a PMS colour or sample to match. Colours in our brochures and artwork forms are visual guides only and may vary slightly from finished garments.

Can I cancel an order for teamwear?If the order has been confirmed with the artwork sheet signed off, and the production process has started, then it is not possible to cancel.

Does Sekem make Women’s fit garments?Yes, with the dramatic increase in women’s sport, most of our garments are also

available in a women’s cut.

What are Sekem’s payment terms?Some accounts will have credit terms with Sekem.

For those customers who do not have an account with Sekem, we require payment in full prior to delivery or on delivery. Our payments methods are:

• EFT

• Credit card

What format do I need to provide artwork in?Sekem’s preferred formats are .eps or .ai files or, alternatively, high resolution pdf files

in Adobe Illustrator.

What do I do if I only have a rough drawing?Our Graphics department can re-draw logos or create garment artwork from scratch.

There may be an additional charge for this service.

Where are Sekem garments made?Sekem manufactures both in Australia and overseas. In both cases, we have very well

established supply arrangements.

Does Sekem differentiate between Elite level garments and the more leisure focussed market?Yes, our top level garments have been designed for the Elite and are generally tighter fitting and made with more elasticated performance fabrics.
