Lent continues until the evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy

Thursday, April 9. During Lent, the decoration of the altar with flow-

ers is not permitted, and musical instruments may be played only to

give necessary support to the singing. Exceptions include Laetare

Sunday, solemnities and feasts. �

Lenten Fast and Abstinence ǀ In the US, every Friday of Lent is a

day of abstinence from meat. Catholics aged 18 and over are bound

by the law of fasting until their 59th birthday. The law of abstinence

binds Catholics ages 14 and older. �

Message from Monsignor René Mathieu:�

(1) Beginning this Sunday and for the next two

weeks, those preparing for baptism at the Easter

Vigil (“the elect”) undergo the scrutinies. These

rites for self�searching and repentance are meant to

uncover, then heal, all that is weak or sinful in the

hearts of the elect; and to bring out, then strengthen

all that is good in them. The scrutinies are celebrated

in order to deliver the elect from the power of sin and Satan so the

priest includes a prayer of exorcism each week; this is to protect the

elect against temptation and to give them strength. These rites should

complete the conversion of the elect from their old way of life to a

new way of life � life in Christ. Let us pray as a parish that our elect,

Penelopi Susan Berry and Emily Sue Brassley, may be given a spirit

of repentance, a sense of sin and the true freedom of the children of

God. The First Scrutiny is being celebrated this Sunday morning at

the 10:30am St. Margaret Church Mass. (2) Special events at Maine

parishes will highlight the Diocese of Portland’s celebration of the

Feast Day of Saint Patrick. The feast day holds special significance

in the diocese as Saint Patrick, along with Saint Jean Baptiste, is a

secondary patron of the diocese. In addition, Saint Patrick Church in

Newcastle was the first church in the country named for Saint Pat-

rick. Bishop Robert P. Deeley, whose parents immigrated to the U.S.

from Ireland, will celebrate Mass at 12:15pm March 17, at the Cathe-

into place seasonal protocols intended to insure the good health of

everyone during this flu and cold season. These continue to be in

effect until further notice. To summarize: parishioners who are sick

with any type of cold or flu�like symptoms should stay home; all

ministers should make liberal use of anti�bacterial sanitizers; shaking

hands by hospitality ministers and by all is discouraged during the

Our Father and the Sign of Peace; the faithful are urged but not re-

quired to receive the Eucharist on the hand rather than on the tongue;

distribution of the Precious Blood is suspended. (4) Thirty�two weeks

into our 5�year Shepherds of Hope capital campaign, the amount

pledged/donated continues to grow weekly. Thus far, we have re-

ceived 742 gifts and pledges amounting to $1,440,166 as of March

10, or some 72% of our $2,000,000 goal. I am happy to report that

pledges or gifts have been recorded every week since the start of our

5�year campaign. Please complete only one pledge card per donor,

even if you happen to give more than originally planned. Clearly

distinguish any donation to the campaign separately from other dona-

tions to the parish, perhaps by writing SOH (for Shepherds of Hope)

and simply noting your campaign ID or even your envelope number

on your envelope or check memo line. (5) A Reminder: In last

week’s bulletin, we printed in its entirety a letter from Bishop Dee-

ley to Maine Catholics. The letter concerns proposed legislation in

Augusta, LD 1613, that would have Maine taxpayers cover the cost

of abortions not covered by federal funds. The bishop wrote: “Maine

Family Planning (MFP) is asking for reimbursement of over $3 mil-

lion in Maine tax funds ($2 million of it on an ongoing basis) to pay

for MFP's refusal to comply with the Protect Life Rule which stops

federal funding to organizations that perform or promote abortions.

Maine abortion providers were the first in the nation to announce

they would not comply with the Protect Life Rule and now demand

that the Maine taxpayers pay instead. LD 1613 is an outrageous af-

front. Affordable, life�affirming health care is still available to all

women from Kittery to Fort Kent at federally qualified health care

centers.” Bishop Deeley concluded his letter with this call to action:

“I urge you to call your state senator at (207) 287�1540 and your

state representative at (207) 287�1400. State your name, where you

live and that you oppose LD 1613. If you do not know who your

senator or representative is, visit www.faithfulcitizenme.org to dis-

cover who they are. Speak out against these actions and let your

voice be heard before it is too late. Join me in praying that our oppo-

sition will stir the consciences of our elected officials into a more

active promotion of the defense of human life. (6) Below my weekly

Spirituality Committee of Good Shepherd will honor the Feasts of
