Welcome to the IACC’s January – June 2013 Pictorial

“I came away from Israel inspired and energized and with more clarity and certainty than ever before that Australia can also cement its place like Israel as a powerhouse of entrepreneurship.” This was a quote from Mr Creel Price , Trade Mission participant on the VC & Entrepreneurs Delegation in June this year.

The Mission included some of Australia's most active and successful early stage private investors. The main aims of the Mission were to see first-hand ‘Israel the Start-Up Nation', understand better the Eco-System that cultivates the Innovation culture, be exposed to various investment models, meet entrepreneurs, companies, business leaders, study the role of Government, Academia and the local Research community.

The objective of all of this was to learn world's best practice in order to strengthen and improve the Australian landscape. This delegation coincided with the joint AUSTRADE-Chamber Oil & Gas Trade Mission. Woodside, Worley Parsons, Clough Engineering and others explored business opportunities in the burgeoning Israeli Natural Gas opportunity. These recent findings are recognised as being one of the largest gas discoveries in the world in the past decade.

Weizmann is one of the world's premier scientific research institutions. The Weizmann Institute of Science is a public research university, it only offers graduate and post-graduate studies in sciences. It is one of the world’s leading multidisciplinary research centers, with around 2,500 scientists, postdoctoral fellows, Ph.D. and M.Sc. students, and scientific, technical, and administrative staff working at the Institute. The Weizmann Institute is a centre of basic interdisciplinary scientific research and graduate study, addressing crucial problems in technology, medicine and health, energy, agriculture and the environment. Groundbreaking medical and technological applications that have emerged from basic research conducted by Weizmann Institute scientists include: • Amniocentesis- a prenatal diagnostic test for the fetus • A method for growing hybrid seeds that prevents the transmission of disease from one generation to the next and helps protect e dible plants from pests, • Living polymerization, one of the most fundamental techniques of the modern polymer industry • Solving the structure of the ribosome, the cell’s protein factory, and revealing its means of action, the Institute’s Prof. Ada Yonath was awarded a Nobel

Prize in Chemistry. Her research should speed the development of antibiotic drugs that are more efficient, especially against antibiotic-resistant strains.

Agrifood Skills Australia Fellowship from the ISSI- International Specialised

Skills Institute of Melbourne to travel to Israel to study

the cultivation of pomegranate orchards.

His research has the potential of creating a new

industry in Australia. Pomegranates have now

been recognised as one of the major health

improving fruits available today, and can be grown

successfully in water limited environments, replacing water hungry crops like

grapes and olives.

Prof. John Dewar, Vice-Chancellor- LaTrobe University & Dr Orna Berry, Chairperson- IACC The nab Yachad Scholarship Fund was established in 2002 by the National Australia Bank to afford talented Australian candidates the opportunity to pursue

a given area of study in Israel. The Fund is founded on the recognition that there are many shared strengths, values and common concerns between Australia and Israel.

Obesity and its consequent metabolic syndrome have reached epidemic proportions in developed and some developing countries. I t is estimated that, by 2025, around 70% of Australia’s adult population will be overweight, with 34% being obese. This poses a major risk factor for type II diabetes,

cardiovascular disease, kidney disease, fertility, sleep disturbance and some forms of cancer, leading to a significant health care burden.

Obesity and the Metabolic Syndrome was the subject of a Making Connections symposium organized by Weizmann Australia and Monash University. The symposium featured experts in this field from the Weizmann Institute, Israel, and Monash University and

other leading International Universities and research institutes.

4TH AUSTRALIAN PSYCHOLOGIST’S STUDY MISSION TO ISRAEL

The Study Tour was organised by the Australian Psychological Society- APS & led by Prof. Amanda Gordon with the objective of promoting positive interchange of ideas between Israeli and Australian psychologists. In particular, the Tour was aimed at furthering professional

practitioner skills. Particular themes included spirituality and interfaith/cross-cultural work, positive psychology, trauma and resilience - areas in which Australia and Israel have common interests, and in which Israel's research expertise is world-class.

The delegation comprised 20-people from all around Australia.

Australian Post and the Israeli Postal Authority issues a joint stamp- The “Australian Soldier Park”. The Park which was founded in Beersheba in 2008 to highlight the Australian Light Horsemen’s heroism and commemorate the memory of the fallen. At the center of the park stands a bronze statue of a mounted Australian light horseman, depicting the moment when the light horsemen breached the Ottoman army’s positions. A photo of the statue is featured on the first stamp, against the background of a group of Australian light horsemen. The stamp tab features the Rising Sun ANZAC Hat Badge.

This year the National Council of Jewish Women of Australia (NCJWA) celebrates 90 years of existence. NCJWA is a national, not for profit, voluntary Jewish women’s organization, providing community support, promoting social justice and the empowerment of all women locally, nationa lly and internationally.

The mission of the International Christian Chamber of Commerce (ICCC) is to serve as a vehicle in extending the operation and principles of wisdom, love and the rule of God Almighty into the marketplaces of the world. The vision calls for a world-wide network of committed businesspeople in contact

with each other, exchanging ideas, products and services; helping sustain and strengthen each other physically and spirituall y.

The Herzliya Conference hosted a Round-Table discussion about “Advanced Small Economies” and

their impact in the global marketplace. Present from New-Zealand was-
