Inference An inference is a conclusion that you make using

the text and what you already know. Not written in the book. This is where “reading

between the lines” happens. You can inference – what is going to happen next

(prediction), how a character is feeling, what a character may be referring to.

Personal Connection vs. Background Knowledge

Personal Connection o Finding a character, setting, theme, or event that you can

relate to your own life.• While you may have never been in an arena killing other kids

(Hunger Games), you have probably stuck up for a brother, sister, friend, etc. and took the blame like Katniss volunteered for Prim.

Background Knowledge (Schema)o Looking to what you already know to make an inference. This

may be a lesson you learned in life, in school, on TV, etc. • In Maze Runner, Thomas wakes up remembering who he is but

nothing else. I know that many times people with memory loss can remember certain things, but not everything. If someone gets a concussion they may remember everything except the day before, of, and after the injury.
