Immigrants from Canada & Mexico
Today’s LEQ: What factors influenced Non-European immigration and settlement?
Mexican Immigrants
Farmers needed cheap labor (TX, NM, AZ, CA)
High wages attracted Mexican workers
Treated as inferior, low wages, & segregated schools
French Canadian Immigrants
Many were Catholics from Quebec
Settled in New England & Great Lakes
Took jobs in textile mills & logging camps
Let’s Recap…
Europeans coming to the United States made up over 70% of all 19th century immigrants, with the remainder arriving from Asia, Mexico and Canada
They came in two distinct waves, from 1845 to 1860 and 1880 to 1910. Think: Why do you think there was a break in
immigration between 1860 and 1880? Most came seeking economic opportunities or to
join family already living in America, but many Eastern Europeans fled their homes to escape political and religious persecution
Until 1855, immigrants were not processed!
Modern Immigration Factoids!
There are currently 11-12 million illegal immigrants living in the U.S.
Two main reasons employers hire illegal immigrants for jobs that require unskilled workers are:
U.S. workers won’t take the jobs
Illegal immigrants will work more cheaply
