A Palm Sunday Meditation: Take Up My Cross?  Palm Sunday raises at least two important spiritual questions for Christians: What does it mean to be like Jesus? And what does it mean to take up our crosses, just like he did?  First, you don't need to go looking for your cross. Life gives them to you. Whether it's an illness or a tough family relationship or trouble in school or problems on the job. The real cross is the one that you don't want.  

 Because it's hardly a cross if you want it. Just like it was for Jesus.  Second, we are asked by Jesus to accept our crosses.   Now, what does that mean? Well, first it means accepting that suffering is a reality in your life, and being honest about it. Perhaps more importantly, it means not passing along the bitterness that you feel. That doesn't mean that when you're with friends or family members or counselors, you can't talk about it or complain about it or even cry about it. That's both healthy and natural.  

But it does mean that if you're angry about your boss or about school or about your family, you don't pass along that anger or bitterness or meanness to others. If you have a lousy boss, does that mean that you should be mean to your family? If you have a difficult family situation, does that mean that you should be angry with your coworkers? If you are having problems at school, does that mean that you should be cruel to your family?   Your cross is your cross. It shouldn't become someone else's.   Third, wait for the resurrection. Because in every cross there will be some invitation to new life, to a new way of relating to God, and often in a way that may not be immediately apparent.   In other words, where is the new life that God is holding out for you? And how will it come? Is it in forgiving someone in your family? Moving away from an unhealthy work environment? Letting go of something that prevented you from being more lov‐ing? Trusting in yourself a little more?   Surrendering yourself to the future that God has in store for you?   God's gift of resurrection is usually a complete surprise, just like it was for the Apostles. And just as the Apostles discovered on Easter Sunday, the resurrection does not come when you expect it. It sometimes takes a long time to come at all.   And when it does come, it's often not what you would expect it to look like.   Most of all, it's often hard to describe, because it's personal ‐‐ it's your resurrection.  When I was a Jesuit novice, I worked in a hospital for seriously ill people, and every Friday we had a little discussion group. One young woman, who had been in a wheelchair for many years told me something that completely surprised me. She said that she used to think of her chair as a cross ‐‐ which would have been my reaction ‐‐ but lately, she said, she thought of it as her resur‐rection.   She said, "My wheelchair helps me get around. Without it, I wouldn't be able to do anything. It brings me life." Despite our crosses, or maybe because of them, these resurrections in our lives do come. You have Jesus's word on that.

Holy Thursday Bus Pilgrimage  

When we are born we begin a pilgrimage to get to heaven.  For some, that pilgrimage is long and for some the pilgrimage is short.  The Knights of Columbus of Mater Christi Council would like to take part of that pilgrimage with you as we travel to seven churches in the Archdiocese of Chicago, on Holy Thursday, April 17th, stopping at each to visit the Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament and offer prayers for each other and our families.  

Our first stop will be at the home of Cardinal Francis George where we will have an outdoor candlelight prayer service offering prayers as he undergoes his treatment for cancer. We will then visit; Our Lady of Mt Carmel, St. Thomas of Canterbury, St. Mary of the Lake, St. Gregory the Great, Our Lady of Lourdes, St. Jerome and St. Ignatius Church.  

At each church we encourage everyone to join us in front of the church as we pray for‐ 

1.  Our children (1st decade of the rosary of the Sorrowful Mother) 

2.   Those that are lonely, depressed or may be considering abortion (2nd decade of the rosary of the Sorrowful Mother) 

3.  Those that have no place to live (3rd decade of the rosary of the Sorrowful Mother) 

4.  Those that are hungry (4th decade of the rosary of the Sorrowful Mother) 

5.  Those that suffer from any addiction (5th decade of the rosary of the Sorrowful Mother) 

6.  Those that are unemployed (6th decade of the rosary of the Sorrowful Mother) 

7.  For Our Priests and religious.  (7th decade of the rosary of the Sorrowful Mother) 

 

We hope that you will want to join us as we pilgrimage together.  The pilgrimage will start after the 6:00 PM mass at St. Ferdinand’s and then we will meet on Belmont Ave, by the north parking log.  The ticket price is $5 for children high school age and younger and $8 for adults.  Tickets can be purchased at the rectory by calling (773) 622‐5900.  (Credit card, cash or check accepted)  

Bring your entire family, your neighbors and friends.  We would like to have four buses filled with parishners of St. Ferdinand Church. 

Feast of Divine Mercy  Sunday, April 27, 

2014  The Novena will begin on Good Friday and will continue through Sunday following the Mass at 8:00AM. On Sunday, April 27 the celebration of Feast of Divine Mercy will start with 12:30pm Mass in English followed by the expo‐

sition of the Blessed Sacrament and will conclude with 3:00pm Mass in Polish.

Good bye and Good luck! It is with sadness that we bid farewell to  Dorothy Golda, our parish secretary for the past ten years.  She has been the willing hands and happy heart  helping to make our parish the great place to worship.  No task was too big or too small for her.  Dorothy’s background is in accounting and she recently has met additional state education  requirements and became CPA certified, there‐fore her desire is to work in the field of her education and interest.  Her last day in the office will be April 15.  We will miss her smiling face and gentle manner.  She has very efficiently kept things run‐ning in the parish office.  To all that came in contact with her, she was always able to help. You will be missed greatly, but we realize that exciting opportunities and challenges await you. May  everyday in your new job be rich and rewarding!  Congratulations and God Bless you in your new endeavor!

INSTITUTION OF PRIESTHOOD Holy Thursday is possibly one of the most  important, complex, and profound days of  celebration in the Catholic Church. Holy  Thursday celebrates the institution of the Eucharist as the true body and blood of Jesus Christ and the institution of the sacrament of the priesthood. During the Last Supper, Jesus offers himself as the Passover sacrifice, the sac‐rificial lamb, and teaches that every ordained priest is to follow the same sacrifice in the exact same way.

GOOD FRIDAY COLLECTION Christians around the world are united in a special way during Lent, Holy Week and Easter. Our hearts, minds and prayers are also especially aware of the Holy Land.  Our parish, once a year on Good Friday, is called on to support Christians in the Holy Land. Many Christians in the Holy Land depend on the collection for their lives.  As a pontifical collection requested by Pope Francis, the annual Good Friday Collection offers a direct link for parishioners to be witnesses of peace and to help protect the Holy Places. When you donate on Good Fri‐day, you are supporting Christians in the Holy Land. Franciscans and others in the Holy Land are housing and feeding the poor, providing religious formation and education, maintaining shrines and parishes, and conducting pastoral ministry. For more information, visit www.MyFranciscan.org. The Good Friday Collection is requested by the Holy Father. Please be as generous as your abundance allows.

Niedziela Palmowa, zwana w liturgii Niedzielą Męki Pańskiej, rozpoczyna w Kościele obchody najważniejszego 

tygodnia – Wielkiego Tygodnia.  Uroczystości Niedzieli Palmowej przybliżają nas do przeżyć Zmartwychwstania Pańskiego — punktu kulminacyjnego w całej historii zbawienia. Wielki Tydzień rozpoczyna się w atmosferze triumfu. Wszyscy czterej ewangeliści pozostawili opis radosnego wjazdu Chrystusa do Jerozolimy. Zmierzając ku miastu od strony Góry Oliwnej, Jezus dosiadł 

osiołka, a tłum witający Syna Bożego rozścielał na drodze płaszcze i gałązki drzew. (…) Liturgia Kościoła nawiązuje ściśle do wydarzeń sprzed bez mała dwóch tysięcy lat. Zamiar ten potwierdzony był już w dokumentach z IV wieku, które zawierały opis zwyczaju, kultywowanego wówczas w Jerozolimie: patriarcha dosiadający osła wjeżdżał do miasta drogą, opisaną w Piśmie Świętym. 

WIELKI CZWARTEK —  USTANOWIENIE SAKRAMENTU KAPŁAŃSTWA  

 Wielki  Czwartek  to  wspomnienie  ustanowienia Sakramentów Eucharystii  i Kapłaństwa.  Jest  to więc  święto wszystkich  kapłanów.  Jest  to  dzień, w  którym  bardziej  niż każdego  innego  dnia  w  roku  mamy  okazję  uświadomić sobie, jak wiele kapłanom zawdzięczamy. 

 W  dniu,  w  którym  Pan  Jezus  ofiarował  Kościołowi  dar Eucharystii,  a wraz  z nią ustanowił  kapłaństwo, pragniemy  skierować  słowa  podziękowania  oraz  życzeń  do  kapłanów pracujących  w  naszej  parafii,    ks.  Zdzisława  Torby, proboszcza oraz ks. Marcina Zasade, wikariusza oraz księży Alberta Judy i Ray O’Connor.  Życzymy Wam gorących serc, abyście  stając  przy  człowieku  w  jego  ziemskiej  wędrówce podnosili  to,  co  słabe,  prostowali  to,  co  powikłane  i wzbudzali nadzieję. Niech Wasza  szlachetna posługa  siania ziarna  Bożej  Prawdy  i  prowadzenia  ludzi  do  spotkania  z Chrystusem  w  sakramentach  przynosi  radość.  Niech przyczynia  się  do  budowania  jedności  Kościoła  –  naszego Domu.    Matka  Chrystusa,  Matka  Kapłanów  swą macierzyńską  miłością  niechaj  broni,  osłania  i  czuwa  nad Wami. Szczęść Boże!

 Polska Katolicka Szkoła im. Św. Ferdynanda organizuje po raz trzeci koncert pieśni patriotycznej, w tym roku poświęcony osobie kanonizowanego rodaka – papieża Jana Pawła II.   Koncert dobędzie się w niedzielę 27 kwietnia o godz. 4pm w kaplicy szkolnej, wstęp wolny.  Wykonawcy: uczniowie z polskiej szkoły, schole szkolne, chór z Trójcowa, Chicagowskie Słowiki, harcerze.   „Ojczyzna jest naszą Matką. Ziemia Polska jest Matką szczególną.”  ZAPRASZAMY!

Podróżująca Ikona jest kopią oryginalnej wielkości, wykonaną tradycyjną metodą ikonograficzną. Została ona przyłożona do oryginału i poświęcona na Jasnej Górze przez abpa Stanisława Nowaka metropolitę częstochowskiego 28 stycznia 2012 roku. W swojej peregrynacji przejechała już ok. 100 tys. km. (ok. 62 tys. mil). Intencją pielgrzymki jest obrona ludzkiego życia i rodziny. 

I etap peregrynacji rozpoczął się we Władywostoku w Rosji, a zakończył w Fatimie i Nazaré w Portugalii. Trasa wiodła przez 24 kraje Azji i Europy (Rosję, Białoruś, Ukrainę, Łotwę, Litwę, Polskę, Czechy, Słowację, Węgry, Rumunię, Słowenię, Chorwację, Włochy, Austrię, Lichtenstein, Szwajcarię, Niemcy, Belgię, Wielką Brytanię, Irlandię, Francję, Hiszpanię i Portugalię) i wyniosła 65 tys. km. (40 tys. mil). Matka Boża odwiedziła 75 katedr, 73 wielkie sanktuaria (w tym Lourdes i Fatimę), ok. 50 cerkwi prawosławnych oraz niezliczoną liczbę parafii katolickich. Zatrzymywała się także na rynkach wielu miast, w szpitalach, więzieniach, schroniskach dla kobiet w ciąży kryzysowej, hospicjach oraz z modlitwą pod klinikami aborcyjnymi. Maryja pokazuje głęboką wiarę współczesnych ludzi, korzenie chrześcijańskiej kultury oraz wielkie zagrożenie atakiem cywilizacji śmierci. Pochyla się nad każdym cierpiącym, leczy poranienie współczesnych ludzi i prowadzi ich do Swojego Syna, Jezusa Chrystusa.  

Od 24 sierpnia 2013 r. Czarna Madonna wędruje po Ameryce Północnej. Przejechała już ponad 35 tys. km (22 tys. mil). Pielgrzymkę koordynuje Human Life International.  Zbliża się Jej wizyta w Chicago, która została objęta patronatem ks. Kardynała Francis George’a, Arcybiskupa Chicago. Koordynatorem na te dni jest Towarzystwo Przyjaciół Fundacji Jana Pawla II w Chicago. Więcej informacji po polsku www.odoceanudooceanu.pl

Fundacja Kultury Tatrzańskiej pragnie zaprosić   w sobotę 26 kwietnia, 2014 na wycieczkę‐pielgrzymkę autobusem po chicagowskich miejscach, w 

których znajduja się pomniki lub pamiątki poświęcone Janowi Pawłowi II.  Autobus zabierze pielgrzymów z dwóch lokacji: 

9:00 rano‐ Kościół Świętej Trójcy, 1118 N. Noble Street Chicago, IL 60642,                           9:30 Kościół św Błażeja, 6101 S. 75th Ave. Summit, IL 60501. 

 W kościele św. Błażeja będziemy modlić się w nowej kaplicy przy relikwiach (kropla krwi) bł. Jana Pawła II. Około godziny 9:45 rano, pielgrzymka wyruszy i odwiedzi: Cmentarz Zmartwychwstania Pańskiego, kościół Ojców Cystersów pod wezwaniem Matki Bożej Matki Kościoła w Willow Springs, kościół św. Cyryla i Metodego w Lemont, kościół Świętych Pieciu Braci Męczenników w Chicago, bazylikę św. Jacka i kościół sw Heleny w Chicago.  Zakończenie naszej wycieczki‐pielgrzymki nastąpi w Muzeum Polskim w Ameryce, gdzie obejrzymy pamiątki i wystawe ku czci Jana Pawła II. Koszt pielgrzymki autobusowej wynosi $30 i rezerwacji można dokonać przez e‐mail: info@tatrafoundation.org lub dzwoniąc pod numer 708 728 0464.  Zapraszamy!

Most marathoners I know hate it when well‐meaning spectators cheer runners on at the 23‐mile mark by saying, “You’re almost there!” I suppose the last three miles of a 26.2 mile event could qualify for being “almost there,” but marathoners understand that the final few miles of the race are tougher than all the miles leading up to the final few miles. Perhaps in similar fashion on this Palm/Passion Sunday, our Lenten journey that began with ashes weeks ago is nearly over. “You’re almost there!” And yet in many ways, the journey is just now beginning, and the pain will be great before we arrive at the empty tomb.       But things don’t start out that way today. The pain‐‐Christ’s own, anyway‐‐doesn’t even appear to be on anybody’s radar screen. “Hosanna to the Son of David,” cry the people spreading their cloaks on the ground and strewing palm branches down on the outskirts of Jerusalem as Jesus approaches the city. “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord; hosanna in the highest.” Are these the same people who would be calling for Christ’s crucifixion shortly thereafter? Some of them, certainly. And why do they turn on Jesus? Why do they praise him one minute and plead for his death the next? I think it’s a case of mistaken identity. At least misunderstood identity.       Not that this should have been, really. I mean, Jesus has been pretty specific about who he is and what he is about these past few weeks.  Consider the Samaritan woman at the well who says to Jesus “I know that the Messiah is coming, the one called the 

Christ…” He responds, “I am he, the one speaking with you”. Consider the man born blind when Jesus asks him if he believes in the Son of Man. The now‐seeing man says, “Who is he sir, that I may believe in him?” and Jesus responds, “You have seen him, and the one speaking with you is he.” By his own words, Jesus is the messiah, the one who is to come. And still, “Crucify him!” Maybe the donkey was the crowd’s first clue…       Wouldn’t this messiah who was going to return Jerusalem to power come riding into town on a great steed? A horse of war? And yet Jesus enters on an ass. Fitting. For the King of Peace… Judas surmises early on that his master is not the savior king destined to overthrow Roman rule, so he cashes in his chips early. When Peter says in the courtyard, “I do not know the man,” there’s probably a grain of truth in his words, for perhaps he, too, is clinging to the popular hope that Jesus is the promised deliverer of the Jews. And when the chief priests mock our Lord, telling him to come down from the cross, I don’t doubt that some of Christ’s own hope he actually does. The Great Sunday is just a week away. We’re almost there! Like being twenty‐three miles into the marathon, though, this is where the journey really begins, and the pain Jesus endures between now and then will bring us to tears. When Christ enters Jerusalem, “the whole city was shaken and asked, ‘Who is this?’” See what I mean? Mistaken identity. At lease misunderstood identity. But the centurion understands at last. For all of us. “Truly, this was the Son of God.”

BAPTISM:

For Children: a pre-Baptism class is required for Baptism of the first child. Classes are held in English on the first Wednesday of each month at 7:30PM in the Church, and in Polish on the last Tuesday of each month at 7:30PM in the Church. Following registration, the sacrament of Baptism is celebrated in English on the second Saturday each month at 6:00PM and on the fourth Sunday of the month at the 12:30PM Mass. The sacrament of Baptism is celebrated in Polish on the first Saturday of the month at 6:00PM and on the third Sunday of the month at the 3:00PM Mass. Please call the rectory to register at 773/622-5900. For Adults: Classes are taught through the Rite of Christian Initiation Program (RCIA) on Sunday mornings at 10:00AM.
