Dear Family,

Everyone who has gone to a Catholic wedding at one time in their lives has probably heard today’s second
reading. I think it’s usually chosen by the couple because of how beautiful it sounds. I mean, let’s face it, if put to
music, Paul’s ode to love would be a thunderous rock ballad or a magnificent opera piece. But do we realize
what he is saying, because I think we tend to sentimentalize his words, really, I think we tend to sentimentalize
“love.” If St. Paul says love is patient, it is because he had to resist the temptation to become unnerved or even
lose hope because he ran into so many obstacles. When he says love is kind, it’s because he knew that in the
face of difficult people, spite and anger were the easiest options. You see friends, if you ask me what the
greatest obstacle to authentic love is, I would cite the belief that love is a feeling. When we relegate love to a
feeling, then it loses its teeth. What we often call “love” disappears at the first sign of discomfort or fear, but this
is not the “love” that Paul was speaking about, that he lived. Warm and fuzzy is one thing, but the fire of selfless
love knows no barriers and is alone what changes the world and what has driven Christians throughout the
centuries to transform their worlds. So, go back and read the passage you heard today and ask yourself
“Which ‘love’ will I live?”

In His joy, Fr. Daniel
