The GroupThe Moncada Group is one of the leading companies in therenewable energy field in Italy, active in wind power, photovoltaic, biomass and merchant lines.

The company, which today has 340 MW in pro-duction, uses internal technologies for windpower thanks to 850/58 WPR air generators withdirect drive technology and for photovoltaic pro-duction of thin film silicon panels. The testing ofthis technology - everything fabricated in Italy -combined with the design and in-house enginee-

ring feats, allows the Moncada Group to opti-mize the process, as well as supply chain andhigh level management. The Moncada Group, thanks to this industrialstrategy, has reached 320 employees, and has amajor role in the renewables scenario, with acontinuous growing trend.

The strategic guidelines represent a new phaseof development of the Group which aims to in-crease its operational presence abroad with thedevelopment of plants in Bulgaria, Romania,USA, Mozambique, Malaysia and the Philippines. The Company has developed a project in Albania

for the construction of the largest wind farm everbuilt in Europe with a total developed capacityof 500 MW.The investment program over the next year pro-vides a growth path for the Group oriented toacquire a significant position the world market.

WindThe Group is the owner of 7 wind farms in operation in Sicily: MonteMele, Monte Malvizzo, Monte Narbone, Monte Durrà, Altopiano Petrasi,Cattolica, Roccarossa, for a total installed capacity of 240 MW.

Production of electricityInvesting in the construction of photovoltaicpower plants large and medium-sized designedand built "In house" to maximize efficiency andreduce environmental impacts. The Group hasoperated for a solar power of 50 MW and is ac-tively involved in the development of projects inBulgaria, Romania, USA, South Africa, Tunisiaand Malaysia.

Production of photovoltaic modulesin thin film silicon:through its facilities in order to directly controlprices, quality and performance of its plants. Themodules produced have Community certification(TUV) and International certifications (UL).

SolarSince 2009, the Group has expanded its activities to the solar sector, dedicating itself to the development and implementation ofphotovoltaic systems for energy production in Italy and abroad.

The company focuses on process and product innovation, and operates the following activities:

Biomass

Considering the results achieved in wind power, the company has main-tained the same approach even in biomass, proposing once again andemphasizing the same experience in organizational methods, in order toacquire the appropriate skills for design, and those necessary for construc-tion and facilities management. The group now has a power output equal to 44MW sites in the Agrigentoprovince and supplied with solid biomass and vegetable oil.

The line developed has a length equal to 154km, 14 km of which are on Italian soil, 10 km onAlbanian soil and 130 km underwater. The pro-ject was approved by the Albanian Governmenton January 9, 2008 (DPCM28) and by the ItalianGovernment on August 6, 2008 (DM239/EL).The interconnection is now functional both to-wards the import of wind energy into Italy that

the Company will produce on Albanian soil, andtowards the export of electricity from Italy toAlbania. The Group has also developed a merchant lineproject in Tunisia with a length equal to 223km, 25 km of which are on Italian soil, 1 km onTunisian soil, and 196 km underwater. The pro-ject is currently awaiting authorization.

The Company has developed the project of interconnecting linecontinuous current between the Italian and the Albanian transmissionnetwork, with a capacity of 500 MW and a voltage of 400 kV.

Merchant line

R&DMoncada is a company vertically integrated in renewable energy.A team of technicians is engaged in ongoing research of innovative solu-tions for the improvement and development of technologies that providesupport to the industry sector to optimize projects carried out by theGroup, in a sustainable development perspective, with particular attentionto interactions between the environment and the territory.

Thermal plants

In order to produce solar electricity through a thermodynamic cycle, the project aims to achieve thefollowing objectives:• Pre-assembly of the conversion module for quick installation at the target site;• Reduction of production costs of the module and production cost per kWh;• Reduction in the amount of CO2 needed for the production of the module.

The Mechanical Engineering staff of the Group works constantly in the evolution and advancementprocess of the construction of the turbine WPR850.The WPR850 project stems from the natural evolution of the previous 750kW wind turbine project. From the experience and knowledge gained through the installation of the prototype, the new ma-chine shows improvements and changes that increase power and efficiency. The Group carefullyvalues the development of small wind turbines up to 200kW of machines but also of larger sizeup to 2 MW.

The operating plants in the thermal department involve the following:• Production and depressurization of steam, heat recovery and energy production;• Industrial and civil heating and cooling plants;• Air handling units;• Sewage treatment and water purification;• Plants for conveying and treating combustible gas;• Special and technical gas distribution and depressurization plants.

BiomassAlgalIn 2009 research and development aimed at designing a systemof cultivation of algal biomass for the production of electricity wasstarted. The organisms in culture in Moncada’s laboratories includemarine microalgae that are single-celled plant organisms that growdirectly in sea water through the uptake of nutrients dissolved init, sunlight and CO2.Our researchers are currently working on four projects. One is toselect the best kind of algae in order to improve its productivity. In our second project, we are studying how to produce this algaeon an industrial scale. In the other projects, we are developinglow cost methods for collecting and processing biomass. In short, an experimental-pre-industrial field will be implementedin Mozambique.

Jatropha CurcasIn the past couple of years the company has conducted researchin Mozambique on an area of 15,000 hectares devoted to growingJatropha curcas that obtained a concession from the governmentin which work is being done on cultivation techniques such asproduction tests of seedlings and cuttings from Africa, CentralAmerica and Asia.

Sweet sorghumIn Sicily cultivation was started of around 3000 hectares of sweetsorghum in order to provide raw materials to the distillery of theGroup. All this happens within 70 km from Sciacca (AG) to be ableto use the short chain as specified by Italian law.

The factory in Porto Empedocle (AG) is used for the production of components for wind turbines. In particular the production of metal forsees:

• Main frame_Navicella, Rotor, Stator• Heat treatment of welded elements• Sandblasting and painting of the elements• Machining of structural• Machining hub• Assembly spacecraft• Rotor Assembly• Assembly and hub extender• Assembling the boat with the generator• Production of fiberglass blades

With their factories strategically located in Italy, the Group produces the latest generation of photo-voltaic modules with amorphous silicon thin film technology with an annual capacity of 100 MW.

The establishment of Sciacca (AG) has the task of producing raw alcohol for their plants. The by-products of wine distilleries are raw materials for biomass plants.
