Why does the Network topology change? (1)
Data (r)evolution: Data Traffic volume is rapidly overtaking Voice
Traffic volume. But: Voice still accounts for up to 80% of Operator
Revenues. Changes in regulatory environment:
Competition forces operators to review the cost of their operations.
Unbundling of the network / bundling of services allows new entrants to propose customers interesting deals.

Why does the Network topology change? (2)

The need for more bandwidth Technology evolution.

Why switch to the New Network?
There can be only one reason: your bottom-line. New Revenues:
Offering bundled services between voice- and data.Offering new services to create a synergy between both domains.
Enhance existing voice-services with Web-capabilities. (e.g.: profile modifications.
Reduce Costs:One single network to manage for voice and data.Reduced engineering cost due to self-routing capabilities of packet-based networks.

The Role in the NGN
A call server is the ‘intelligence’ in a distributed switch/router network, using gateways (Trunk-, Access-, Residential-, Wireless-GW) to convert the bearer traffic from their native transport mode to the mode used in the data-network (mainly IP)
Other names, used in the industry: SoftSwitch, Call Agent
A Call Server deals mainly with real-time services: voice, video, multimedia
It does not interfere with services that require no network support
